Set above the historic town of Madrid N.M. is Waldo Mesa. The location of past mining operations and stunning Vista's.The campsite is 0.9 miles off highway 14 in the historic town of Madrid and up to the mesa. Site 1 can accommodate RV's and tall setups as well as tents. The hill going to the site is short, approx. 0.2 ml. Its dirt and rock and a little steep but everything from bikes, motorcycles, sedans and buses can easily navagate without bottoming out, just take it slow. It has beautiful mesa views with plenty of privacy and nice outhouse within 50 yards. Madrid and sister village, Cerrillos are loaded with places to explore on foot or by other means. Both towns are very rich in history, from past ocean existance to Native American civilizations, silver and gold mining to booming wartime coalmining industries, to ghost towns.

Unique and lovely

We really enjoyed staying on the Mesa above Madrid. It was a favorite on our trip. Our site was quiet and private and had a beautiful view over the valley. The adjacent cemetery was so interesting and quirky, with a combination of historic and more recent graves, all lovingly tended. The outhouse was immaculately clean. We would enjoy staying there again. Kim, the host, was warm and welcoming, and she filled us in on some the history of Madrid and the cemetery.

Awesome view! Great communication by the host. It was a very relaxing time and the town where there are some lovely shops and a fun bar are just a short walk down the road. I will definitely be staying there again.

Beautiful spot to tent camp. Flat area for tent, metal firebox for a campfire, table, natural wood bench and wicker bench. The road to the camp site is a dirt/gravel road but was easy to travel. The town of Madrid was enjoyable with good food and music.

Incredible Experience

My girlfriend and I are driving across the country with our two dogs and camping in our Subaru along the way and this was the perfect place to stop. It is a bit of a bumpy ride up to the campsite but definitely worth it. We got in late so when we woke up is when we saw the amazing views of the surrounding mountains. Both of Kim’s dogs were very nice and polite and played well with our dogs. Kim was an excellent host and made us feel at home when we arrived, explained where everything was and let us know about the dogs. The property is very big so when she left we had plenty of privacy. Our highlight of this place is the really unique cemetery next to the campsite. We loved our stay here!
