Laurenwood Farm

7 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents100 acres · Loretto, ON
Welcome to Laurenwood Farm! New for 2024: Due to health reasons the farm is fallow this season. It is still a quiet, peaceful escape to the country and you can enjoy all of the amenities but there will be no veggie boxes this season and there are fewer animals to visit. We do have some items available such as honey and syrup. The farm is a 100-acre working livestock and organic mixed produce farm with picturesque views, miles of wooded trails, and a beautiful little fish pond. Fresh organic veggies and farm-fresh eggs are available seasonally. Guests are welcome to wander the trails, check out the pond and gardens, and have a guided tour to experience meeting the animals. Nearby are several conservation areas and access to the Bruce Trail. Walking, biking or horseback riding is very pleasant on the quiet country roads around. There are many local fairs and festivals in the surrounding villages, such as the Beeton Honey Festival and Tottenham Bluegrass Festival. We have three different listings, a cottage, a barn loft, and a tent/RV site. We look forward to hosting you!

Camp Willowbrook

6 sites · Lodging95 acres · Amaranth, ON
We purchased this farm in 1998 from the previous farmer who had owned it since 1929. The train line ran right by the gate where the Kota hut now sits and would drop cattle right there to be finished and sold later at the Toronto Stockyards. Our barn was built in 1890 with the old farmhouse located across the creek. Two creeks meet the Grand River on our farm. The bunkie is situated north of the barn and faces Willow creek. During the summer the creek gets quite shallow but there are a couple of pools that work nicely for a float with our river tubes. The river also has a small swimming hole. The bunkie is nestled between 2 hills which creates a natural little valley. Campers can take a walk around the property or use the nearby long walking trail. New this spring, campers will be able to enjoy the firewood sauna, located close to the bunkie and nestled in a private spot near the creek.

Our Sacred Nature Eco Farm is an incredibly beautiful +15 acre homestead, where we are slowly growing in becoming self-sufficient. We have 2 curious cats and a very friendly border collie dog. Coo, the Farm dog, who may occasionally visit you and want you to through a ball or stick endlessly. He may bark sometimes but he is NEVER aggressive. (Just let us know if dogs are an issue for you and we will try to keep him in the house backyard.) We usually grow a yearly organic vegetable garden (mostly for personal use), but this year, due to other circumstance, we are not. We have also grown many medicinal herbs, perennial flowers, and have a small dwarf tree orchard of over 35 different fruit and nut trees and bushes. We have a gorgeous spring-fed pond that you can swim in from late May to early September. The owner is Psychotherapist and a Retired Natural Building Architect. This woodland retreat, just 40 minutes from Downtown Toronto, provides a perfect escape for those seeking a break from the ordinary. Welcome to Our Handcrafted Oasis: Immerse yourself in rustic charm at our handcrafted cabin, where every detail tells a story. I personally built this entire cabin, pouring passion into every nail and beam. Much of the wood material was sustainably sourced from the surrounding forest and milled right here on our hobby farm. The roof and flooring, crafted with care, echo the natural beauty that surrounds you. Sustainability: I used as much recycled, and reclaimed materials as possible in the build instead of new materials. Even the wood floors and ceiling were milled from trees that died naturally in the very same forest the cabin is located. The cabin is totally off grid, and relies on a small solar panel to power the electronics of the incinerating toilet. Cozy Interior with Forest Views: Inside, a warm and inviting interior awaits. The open-concept living area features a wood-burning stove, ensuring cozy evenings. Large windows frame panoramic forest views, bringing the outdoors in as you relax in comfort. Well-Equipped Kitchenette: Prepare delightful meals in the small, but well-equipped kitchen, complete with a gas stove. Upstairs, a loft-style bedroom boasts a queen-sized bed, while the lower level offers a cozy futon for additional sleeping space. Drift off to sleep to the gentle sounds of the forest. Please note you must be able to climb a ladder to access the loft. Modern Amenities in Nature: Our commitment to sustainability includes a modern toilet in a separate washroom building. Please note our toilet relies on solar power, during the winter and long stretches of cloudy weather, the battery may become depleted. We have battery back ups available so please let us know of any issues and we can rectify them right away. Board Games for Cozy Nights: Take your games night to the next level with our selection of board games. Whether you're a strategic mastermind or a casual player, enjoy quality time with friends and family in the warmth of the cabin. Outdoor Bliss: Step outside to explore the hiking trails that wind through our forested haven. With direct access to over 100 acres of public forest, every hike is a new adventure. As well as our newly added family of sheep followed closely behind by our livestock guardian dog, Nala, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all our animal friends. Discover the Area: For those eager to explore beyond the cabin, historic downtown Uxbridge is only 10 minutes away. Here, you'll find a charming array of shops and restaurants, many of which are highlighted in our guidebook. Indulge in local flavors and discover hidden gems in this vibrant community. Your Hosts: As advocates for sustainable living, we're here to ensure your stay is memorable. Reach out for assistance or local tips during your woodland getaway. Book Your Forest Retreat: Escape the ordinary and reconnect with nature. Secure your reservation at our off-grid cabin, just 40 minutes from Toronto, where modern comfort meets the tranquility of the woods. Create lasting memories surrounded by the beauty of the forest. Cabins near Markham guide

Overview

Markham was once a quaint town and bedroom community but has recently developed into a business and industrial centre in its own right. You’ll need to head out of town to find campgrounds, but there are plenty of natural areas to explore nearby, including hiking trails, lakes, and parts of Ontario’s protected Greenbelt.

Where to go

Rouge Valley

The Rouge River winds through the suburban landscape just east of Markham and makes its way down to Lake Ontario. A large area has been designated as Rouge National Urban Park, which is free to enter (unlike other national parks) and has lots of hiking trails and forest to explore. The park contains Toronto’s only public campground, the Glen Rouge Campground near Highway 401. The park also borders the Toronto Zoo, which makes the campground a great place for a family stay.

Musselman Lake

There are several camping options north of Markham if you drive up Highway 48. Here you’ll find lakefront parks with RV and tent camping, plus some with family amenities like kayak rentals, pools, and tennis courts.

East Gwillimbury

Further up Highway 48 you’ll find more campgrounds and glamping sites offering tent camping, cabins, and more.

When to go

Most of the campgrounds near Markham are seasonal and operate between May and September. Some may stay open until early October (Canadian Thanksgiving weekend). Going in May or early June will help you steer clear of the summer crowds. Plus, there are no black flies to contend with this far south.

Know before you go

  • Markham is home to a lot of large workplaces, so rush hour traffic can be awful. Avoid arriving or leaving between 8am and 10am or between 4pm and 6pm.
  • Many conservation areas near Markham have walking trails, and some feature beaches. None of the nearby conservation areas allow camping, but they are still worth a visit.
  • The Markham Fair—an annual event that is held the weekend before Thanksgiving (early October)—is one of the biggest agricultural fairs in Canada. Timing your trip to experience the fair is well worth it.
  • The Oak Ridges Trail is a multi-purpose trail over 160 kilometres long, which passes through Richmond Hill, north of Markham. The main trail and side trails offer lots of hiking and cycling options as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when conditions are right.
