Camp Willowbrook

6 sites · Lodging95 acres · Amaranth, ON
We purchased this farm in 1998 from the previous farmer who had owned it since 1929. The train line ran right by the gate where the Kota hut now sits and would drop cattle right there to be finished and sold later at the Toronto Stockyards. Our barn was built in 1890 with the old farmhouse located across the creek. Two creeks meet the Grand River on our farm. The bunkie is situated north of the barn and faces Willow creek. During the summer the creek gets quite shallow but there are a couple of pools that work nicely for a float with our river tubes. The river also has a small swimming hole. The bunkie is nestled between 2 hills which creates a natural little valley. Campers can take a walk around the property or use the nearby long walking trail. New this spring, campers will be able to enjoy the firewood sauna, located close to the bunkie and nestled in a private spot near the creek.

Forest Cabin on rolling-hill farm

1 site · Lodging50 acres · Erin, ON
Welcome to your private cabin with forest trails, fields, and stars at night. It's a glamping paradise! Privacy and wildlife only an hour from Toronto. Your straw bale cabin has a queen-size bed, a cozy living room with a fireplace, a cute little kitchenette on the porch. Your front yard is a private forest courtyard with a big fire pit, cooking grill and picnic table. Solar power for lights and phone charging. Firewood and water for drinking and washing. And it's just a 20-second hop to the VERY clean and private outhouse. The cabin walls made of straw bales covered with plaster. The deep window sills make it feel like you're in an adobe mud home in Arizona. When we built it in 2002 it was one the first straw bale buildings in Ontario. It's as gorgeous now as as ever. You are free to explore our 50-acre property. There's a bit of everything here. Trails, forests, fields, meadows, rolling hills, and panoramic views. My wife and I live at the front of the farm property, pretty far from the cabin. So you have privacy, but we're available by text or phone if you need us. Interested in local food? Explore our organic vegetable fields, check out the greenhouses, or hang out with our happy chickens and sheep. Ready for a unique dinner experience? Rent the pizza oven in the courtyard of our little community centre, just a two-minute stroll from your hidden cabin. Looking for local fun and adventure? There are a lot of attractions just a short drive away: the Village of Erin, the Pink Hills of Caledon, the Elora-Cataract Trail, GoodLot Brewery, Alton Mill, and much more.

Cabins near Kitchener guide

Overview

Kitchener is best known for its massive Oktoberfest celebrations with its twin city Waterloo, but there’s a lot more to this little city. Just a few minutes away, you can enjoy the Stratford Festival, with a variety of theatrical offerings including some of Shakespeare’s best. Just north of town is the Mennonite settlement of St. Jacobs, where city dwellers go to buy amazing quilts and other artisanal items. The surrounding countryside and nature reserves make for a laidback escape.

Where to go

Close to Town

If staying near Kitchener is your priority, a number of private campgrounds are available just outside of the city. Laurel Creek Conservation Area is the one public campground in Waterloo.

Conservation Areas

A few of the conservation areas managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority have seasonal campgrounds. Elora Gorge is particularly popular with families for the experience of tubing down the gorge, while Guelph Lake, Conestogo, and Pinehurst also offer camping.

If you’re planning to visit the Stratford Festival, there are a couple of campgrounds between Kitchener and Stratford, some with tent and RV sites as well as cabins. You may be able to find some beachfront campsites.

When to go

Most of the camping options near Kitchener are seasonal, operating between May and October. Campgrounds often have lower rates in May and from after Labour Day until they close for the season. Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest runs for nine days in late September and early October, when there may still be some campgrounds open.

Know before you go

  • With St. Jacobs being home to a Mennonite community, you may find yourself sharing the road with horse-drawn buggies in the surrounding areas. Give them plenty of space.
  • Kitchener-Waterloo has two universities, so even when it’s not time for Oktoberfest, there can be rowdy students around town.
  • GO Transit commuter trains connect Kitchener and Toronto with hourly (and often more frequent) service. Even if you don’t have a vehicle, reaching Kitchener is easy.
  • When the large student population leaves for the summer (from May through August) the city becomes much more relaxed and quiet, but popular summer spots like the Elora Gorge get crowded on weekends.

Nearby attractions

For an enriching nature retreat, camping near Rockwood Conservation Area is ideal. The Rockwood camping experience combines tranquil forest trails, mesmerizing limestone cliffs, and crystal-clear waters, promising a truly invigorating outdoor adventure.
