Welcome to our secluded little farm paradise. We are located on the west side of the W̱SÁNEĆ Peninsula on the main drive, West Saanich Road. Close to the beaches Coles Bay and Patricia Bay and a 12-minute drive to Sidney and the village of Brentwood Bay. We have 3 accommodations offerings here on HipCamp: (1) Tent camping in the fenced forest meadow (2) Car camping at selected sites around the farm (3) The Barn Loft private guest suite {1. The Camping Meadow} The meadow is a 1/2 acre fully-fenced, flat forest dell. There is a water spigot and an electrical outlet. It can host up to 3 tents. It is tent camping only - no vehicles allowed in the meadow. West Saanich Road can be a bit loud at night in the summer. If you have sensitive hearing, we encourage earplugs and/or camping at the farthest west end of the meadow. {2. Car Camping} The Cedar Grove is a private camp site with room for a regular vehicle (not an RV) and a tent. It is our only spot where you may camp next to your vehicle. {3. The Barn Loft Guest Suite} The Barn Loft Guest Suite is a beautiful restored hay loft with a double bed, a pull-out sofa, a kitchenette, and a living room and dining area. It is equipped with a composting toilet. Those staying at the Loft can also use the shared farm washroom. {Shared Washroom} The washroom is the shared washroom inside the farmhouse on the ground/basement floor, with a flush toilet and luxury shower. It is a short walk from the camping meadow, inside the heritage farmhouse. Please note that while inside the farmhouse basement, only the washroom is available for public use. Entering other areas of the basement is prohibited, as these are private living spaces. {Farm Fun} We have five horses, a tiny pony, chickens, a few goats and a flock of sheep. You are welcome to respectfully meet the animals with us - it is not permitted to meet the animals without a guide. DM us if you want to say hi to the animals and we will arrange a time. The Gertie Bus is located a 5 min walk to a beautiful white sand beach (at low tide). There are walking trails all around and lots of beach access. Tucked into the front of our property in the quiet of Gabriola island you’ll find the converted Gertie bus with all the amenities you need. The bus has a gas stovetop/oven, bar fridge and sink with grey water system. Equipped kitchen and sofa area to hang out. The standard queen bed is great for sleeping in and relaxing with that second cup of coffee. Mountain biking, hiking, swimming and whale watching are just steps away. There is beach access across the street through a private park with picnic tables, a very old eagles nest and a private access to a rocky beach perfect for sunsets. The home itself has a pottery studio on the main floor with a full time studio Practice. Give Paige a ring if you’d like a tour, she’s usually working away. Our family lives on the top floor. Outside the bus is are lush veggie gardens, fruit trees and a nice private outdoor dining area. A BBQ and solar lights also help with evening hangouts. Family friendly! Also we love animals but we ask that you clean up after your pet and keep any animals that aren’t so great with kids and other animals on leash. We have a dachshund on the property that is friendly and old ( barks at strangers but is all bark I assure you, he just wants to be friends)

Learn more about this land: Wild Coast has 2 nightly campsites for you to enjoy. Site one is a large, flat open gravel base. And Site 2 is a large, flat grass based site. Please note you must have your own trailer or tent. We’re a 5-10 minute drive to Rathtrevor beach/Parksville, Englishman River. We are right in the middle of an extensive trail network perfect for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding.  Both sites have plenty of space for RVs and trailers - we can accommodate vehicles up to 45ft in length. 30 amp Electrical and potable water hookups are available on both sites. WI-FI onsite as well. There is a flush toilet and sink available in our farm store that is available for guest use. No shower yet, but we are working on it! The property is private yet close to all amenities. Local favorite Rocking Horse Pub is a quick walk next door and a must-stop for dinner and drinks!  Centrally located on Vancouver Island, it’s a perfect spot to set up the rig and day trip out to Rathtrevor, Little Qualicum, Parksville, Coombs, Port Alberni valley and Nanaimo, or go for an overnighter in Victoria, Tofino, Mount Washington and the Comox Valley. Campfires are permitted as long as there is no fire ban and we have dry firewood for sale onsite. If you would like firewood send us a message before you arrive. Pets are welcome, but please be responsible for them. There is a large open grass field for you to let them run and burn off that energy. This site was just what we needed for a bit of a break before catching the Nanaimo ferry (30 min away). Cory and Trish were very quick to respond to any questions, including the whereabouts of a local dog friendly beach. The bathroom for the camp sites was beyond expectations. And of course, The Rocking Horse Pub just down the road is really such a perc.

We had such a wonderful stay at the Whalebone Guest House with another couple and our dog. The tiny house was spotless, cozy, and well equipped — with a comfortable bed, handy kitchen, and thoughtful touches throughout. Even with four of us, it felt welcoming and never cramped. The property itself is beautiful and peaceful, surrounded by gardens and just a short walk to Whalebone Beach. We enjoyed quiet mornings by the ocean, easy island exploring during the day, and relaxing evenings back at the house. Our dog was happy and comfortable too, which made the trip even better. Our host was warm and accommodating, making sure we felt right at home while giving us plenty of space to relax. This was the perfect getaway spot, and we would happily return again.

The place was nice and clean, the stay was very pleasant. However, the Fox Den was the only tent without an electric light (all the other tents did have a light). So, if you need light inside the tent book one of the other tents.

The site is huge! Nice and flat, potable water and power hook-ups. Trash, compost and recycling at the site. Flush toilet and sink very close to site. Hosts are very friendly and relaxed, ensuring guests enjoy their stay while allowing privacy. The site and bathroom was very clean. The field for our dog to run off-leash was a wonderful treat and Teddy had a blast! The area is quiet with beautiful star gazing at night. Lots to see and do, great hiking and swim spots close by. We enjoyed our stay very much! Absolutely recommend !

Very cute meadow on a farm for safe camping. It is outside of the busy city. There is the main road and golf course on the corner of the meadow but the noise is not overwhelming. The clean bathroom/shower and shared fridge were a big bonus for the fair cost. Hosts were respectful and friendly.

This was a beautiful little spot, very private my boyfriend and my self basically had the whole place to ourselves. It was close to everything and the owners were very kind! There is a lovely little washroom and shower, a little place to do your dishes. Their chickens were very friendly as long as you leave them be and very cute watch. All and all it was a 10/10 stay! Just make sure to bring lots of lights!

When to go

With its temperate climate, Vancouver Island has the warmest year-round weather in all of Canada, but it also gets the most rainfall. To avoid the wettest months (October to April), plan your camping trip to Duncan and the Cowichan Valley between May and September. July and August are the busiest months, so make sure you book ahead if possible. If you’re seeking the two sweet-spot months for camping, opt for June or September.

Know before you go

Public transit is limited outside of Duncan’s downtown area, so if you want to explore the greater Cowichan Valley, having your own vehicle is key.
There are a number of shopping centres along the Trans-Canada Highway and in Duncan, but once you venture off onto smaller roads, supplies become limited. Stock up where you can.
Bears and cougars live all over Vancouver Island, so follow park food-storage guidelines and wildlife protocols.
Even during the summer months, the rain can roll in, so be sure to pack appropriate waterproof clothes and gear to keep you warm and dry.
