Discover Mount Surprise: A haven for adventure seekers.
An historic mining town with a hidden secret, Mount Surprise is a necessary stop for anyone camping in far North Queensland. With Heritage-listed railroads, the town of Mount Surprise is home to the most intact railway buildings of their kind. The private railroad was built in 1910; visitors nowadays can experience what life was like for miners in the time of the gold rush. Just a 30-minute drive from Mount Surprise you'll find the Undara Lava Tubes. An out-of-this-world experience, the lava tubes wind their way into the earth in a landscape often compared to lunar ridges. Once part of a lava tube system over 160km in length, the explorable sections of the park are stunning and rich in wildlife. The lava tubes and the surrounding parkland are home to a wide array of rare species that have adapted to this unique environment.
The ideal time to visit Mount Surprise is during the cooler months, from April to September, when the weather is most pleasant for outdoor activities. Summer can bring intense heat, making it less comfortable for hiking and exploration. Plan your trip outside of school holidays to avoid the busiest periods.
