The vibe at Yuba River Cabins
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We would HIGHLY recommend. It's an easy drive from SF and minutes away from Nevada City. There is no cell or wifi, which makes it a wonderful weekend escape from reality. There are wild flowers everywhere, and a very well maintained paved drive to the cabins. This property is just gorgeous! The cabins overlook a canyon where the Yuba River flows. They are both stocked with mini-fridge, plates, utensils and everything else you will need during your stay! No detail was left unfinished - the furniture, counter, bowl sinks etc were all beautifully crafted from reclaimed wood adding to the rustic, but luxurious feel. There is a bathhouse just behind the cabins with shower and composting toilet, and even an outdoor shower overlooking the canyon
We recently stayed here and I have to say this was one of the most beautiful places in CA I've ever been to. Alicia couldn't have been more welcoming and kind. She really went out of her way to make sure we had a good trip.
The cabins are far enough away from everything that we truly felt like we were the only people for miles. The cabins are beautiful and well stocked/equipped. The outdoor shower was wonderful, and even runs hot water! The property is exceptionally beautiful as is the river. The hike to the river was wonderful (about 15 minutes) and there is just a ton of exploring to do. Nevada City is only a short drive away and has everything you might need.
10/10 would stay again and have recommended these cabins to friends.
Behind the cabins, a trail leads you on a quick 10 minute hike to the river. The hiking trails throughout the property are perfect - just like you are in a national park, but private land! It's simply amazing. The river area has a hammock, chairs and picnic table. There are huge granite slabs, rocks and swimming pools for you to enjoy. We visited early June and the water was crystal clear and refreshing, but warm enough to swim in, especially on hot days. There is a ton of land to explore and rocks to scramble.
The property owner, Alicia, is just great. She is incredibly down to earth and sweet. The property is entirely off the grid running of of solar and an impeller. The four of us had one of the best weekends ever - no exaggerations!
I am still in awe of how wonderful everything was. The trip started off with some terrible traffic leaving San Francisco, but once we arrived, were very pleasantly surprised with the hospitality offered by Alicia and her husband, Michael. They had all the amenities you'd need (lotion, bug spray, silverware, etc.), we even got to kayak! The river entry is absolutely gorgeous. Very tranquil, with clear water. The rocks were fun to jump around on. The cabins/cobblestone huts were spacious with comfortable beds.
Couple of cautions: make sure to clean the dishes very well prior to leaving to cabin because in the heat some (harmless) ants like to venture in. Also, maybe wear shoes at the river bank... I accidentally stepped on a bee and was stung (still was too excited about kayaks to care).
Pristine and completely secluded, it was such a privilege to stay in Alicia's amazing cabins and explore and relax at this magical stretch of the Yuba river. Her love and care for the land is so apparent. We wanted to be offline without the phone for a while. Instead you have a pure green forest vista all around, great night time stars, the fabulously reassuring sound of the river over the immense polished, sculpted granite boulders. Superb swimming or soaking in natural jacuzzis and delightful lux camping accommodation. The only hardship was leaving. Can't wait to go back and share again with friends. Take footwear that ties on your feet as the path to the river is steepish at times and the DG gravel can slide so flip flops are not so good.
"There is nothing wrong with stopping from time to time to look into the stains in the walls, or into the ashes of the fire, or the clouds, or the mud, or other similar places, which, if you consider them well, you will find therein very wondrous inventions, and these will awaken the painter's brilliance to new inventions. . . I have seen shapes in clouds and on patchy walls that have roused me to beautiful inventions of various things, and even though such shapes totally lack finish in any single part, they were not yet devoid of perfection in their gestures or other movements."

This place is a wonderful gift, since most of us won't have the opportunity to own such beautiful, private, riverfront property, so tastefully designed for relaxation. The two cabins suited our kids (5, 8) and us very well. Bedding and furnishings were natural and gorgeous, beds were wonderful, the outdoor shower was such a treat, and the walk to the river pools was manageable by our kids without much complaint. I feel so fortunately that our hosts see fit to share their good fortune with others.
The cabin was fantastic. It's nice and cozy, and includes everything that you need if you want to have a cookout (outdoor grill, stovetop, pots/pans, etc.). The fireplace is a nice touch to keep you warm through the night, and everything was provided for to create the fire (logs, starter wood, lighter, etc.). The cabin looks out across the river and is located far enough away from civilization that you can actually see the stars! Alicia was a very accommodating host who answered all my questions. I recommend this place to everyone, and I might look to come back another time!
What a beautiful and connecting place! The river is especially wild and austere here on the land, and it makes you feel incredibly connected to Earth and alive. The stone "yurt" like cabins are lovely, and comfortable, with all the necessities. I hope to come back and bring my family and friends over the years to witness this magical place.
It's hard to describe all the elements that make this an exceptional get away. It's singularly isolated, with an incredible undisturbed view of the river. A short walk to the water (steep though) gets you right down to an amazing swimming hole. It was a bit high and cold this week, but it was easy to see how lovely it would be later in the season. the cabins are unique and lovely. Everything you need is right there. The outdoor shower with a view to the gorge is wonderful. Alicia is a great host, and I highly recommend setting up a time to talk with her (ride or native plant tour) to learn about the landscape and ecosystem. Can't reccomend enough.
The Yuba River Cabins are a great place to detox and relax. The property is absolutely beautiful and serene; every inch of it has been well thought out, and it's clear that Alicia and her partner have put a lot of thought into how to respect the land. The cabins were comfortable and clean and contained all we needed for a beautiful weekend getaway :)
Yuba River Cabins are as beautiful as you can get. Incredible river views from up top, and after you hike down--the river speaks for itself--beautiful, but given the recent rains--also rough. Communication with Alicia was easy and informative including instructions and all you need to get there and enjoy your stay.
The cottages themselves have all the amenities you need and then some. Including the super clean, stocked bathroom with compost toilet which works great --not at all smelly:) The outdoor shower is particularly enjoyable--it overlooks the river view. The hike down to the river is just that-- a hike--so make sure to pack comfy walking shoes. But it's almost entirely shaded which helps you beat the heat.
Things to mindful about: there is a lot of poison oak around--part of life in nature. And lots of mosquitos at dusk--we chose to make that our napping hour and that worked great because after dusk most are gone and then it's time to sit back and enjoy stars for miles. We saw lots of shooting stars! Most important: the Yuba river when we went was dangerously high. Alicia did a good job of warning us in the info she provided. I only mention it here to really drive the point home that right now--you have to be extra cautious in it. It's not the place to be if you're looking for a mellow swimming experience.
All in all--Yuba River Cabins is a special place that I would highly recommend to others. Being able to park right next to the cottages makes for a very easy pack in/pack out experience. And once there--about everything you need and then some awaits you. I can't speak highly enough about Yuba River Cabins! We'll definitely be back.
This is a purely magical experience, everything suited our expectations and even went beyond what we had imagined this beautiful slice of heaven to be like. Alicia left us a very nice note and extended alternate river access since the private river access to the cabins was still flowing pretty quickly. We really enjoyed our stay, the beds were comfy also and everything was clean - you can tell the pride in ownership and the craftsmanship of the cabins were very interesting. The furnishing were also spot on, bedding excellent and the mini kitchens in each cabin were so nice after camping several days. The outdoor shower was also a treat after long days on the river. Thank you Alicia for your hospitality!
The Yuba River Cabins are magical beyond belief. The land is extraordinary, the beauty is breathtaking and humbling. Every detail of the cabins and stay was perfect. All you could need is in the solar-powered cabins for the stay to be easy and relaxing. The river pools were gorgeous -we swam some 4 hours per day during our stay! I am SO thankful that Alicia and her family share this spot of heaven. I will return, many, many, many, many times.
This was definitely one of the most magical places we've ever been. The pictures look amazing but somehow don't do this place justice! We hiked and swam all weekend, cooked amazing food, and saw lots of shooting stars. Super comfortable beds, impeccably maintained hiking trails and bathroom. If mosquitoes tend to like you, make sure your bring your repellant!
Fantastic weekend stay. The emerald waters were just what was needed to beat the heat. And oh so private! Alicia was a great host and left us great information on the area and books on the native americans, miners and flora of the area. Made me appreciate the land and its relationship with people who have inhabited the area. Definitely would return, highly recommend!
