This was my first experience using HipCamp and I can honestly say I am a total convert. The check in process and communication were all 10/10.
As far as the actual campsite, it is infinitely better than any standard campsite I’ve ever been to. Chester had two fire pits, a cool bamboo teepee structure and plenty of space to roam around. If you are considering camping in Harriman state park....don’t! Come here instead.
There’s some cool trails nearby, an old cemetery right across the street and we even had a visit from Porky, a friendly neighborhood pig. Guarantee you won’t get that at your typical busy campground.
Overall a great experience. Considering the location to NYC, it’d make a nice weekend get away for anyone looking to escape and experience nature. Don’t hesitate to book here!
Nice setup the site is rustic feels like a camp site.. it could use some help but overall a good experience. Lots of firewood ask the neighbors...
If your not worried about the outhouse and there is a lake a short drive only problem you will get a parking ticket if not parked in designated spot. The trail is ok but you need to watch were it is taking you.
The site, located behind the host’s house, was well maintained and the host responded very quickly to my initial messages to request the site and ask for directions, and he let me know at that time that he would not be reachable during most of our stay. The site was decent, with two fire pits and room to park our car off the street.
Unfortunately the neighbor’s dog was barking incessantly at us for hours each time we were at the campsite, and no one intervened. There were also two men shooting compound bows/arrows in the back of our campsite for a couple hours one of the days we were there - my girlfriend and I were too afraid to approach them, but they stared us down and did not stop, which was a bit scary.
Great little spot right on the edge of Harriman. Still pretty close to other houses so you will hear the neighbors / see lights from other properties most of the night. Nicely set up, and the host provided firewood the first night which was cool. Perfect for Moto camping into bear mountain!
We arrived at the site and immediately noticed that it is less secluded than the pictures would have you believe. You basically park right behind the hosts house and the site in right behind his and his neighbors houses. While walking around the site, it was immediately apparent that it needs a major cleanup. There was broken glass, old rusty pieces of metal, tires, a broken down overgrown camper and boat, and food and product packaging. There is no seating around the campfire and there is no toilet or outhouse, it is merely a bucket. The pallet for the tent was missing boards so it was unpleasant to sleep on. We only ended up staying one night. The only perk to this site is it’s location, as it is close to many great hiking spots. However, I would not recommend this site, especially if you’re planning on bringing an animal since there is broken glass and rust metal all over the ground.
Check in and check out process was very straight forward and easy. Chester gave me a call before we came to ask if we had any questions he could answer before we arrived. The space itself is much like the reviews say - it is part of the host's property. We didn't have any interaction with the host while we were there and didn't really need to. The outhouse was not really much of an outhouse, just a bucket placed under a toilet seat which made some of the people in my group a bit uncomfortable using. The shower took a little time to figure out, but once it started working it was great.
