Enjoy the country life in Kau on the South End of the Big Island and the lovely red Lehua flowers blooming. We live on 20 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place). Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there. You don’t need a 4WD to get to our place, but you will need a SUV or truck. Go slow the road is bumpy and rough in places. We are 1.2 miles from the highway. Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot! The silence is golden and the stars are amazing. Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. Shared bathroom (see photos) about a 100 feet away. Hipcamp kitchenette includes a propane single burner, ice chest, No fridge. No oven. We have an outdoor fire pit, if you like campfires! It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is plenty of coffee and tea in the kitchenette. Boil hot water in the kettle, put cone filter with a paper filter and ground coffee inside and on top of thermos. Drip. It's delicious! This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and Tmobile work also The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! The back 15 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve. We have beautiful furnished cabins with beds, so you don't have to pitch a tent. Pillows, blankets, fresh towels provided.

There is no electricity in the cabanas but there are power strips available in the common area.  The common area consists of a large deck with picnic tables, Wifi access (pw: pickalltheweeds), power strips for charging electronics, canopies for when it rains, a 2-burner hotplate for cooking, pots, pans, plates, utensils, cups, dry food storage and a full sized fridge with freezer. Please keep the area clean. We also offer morning Breakfast Basket options: Small basket $ - 2 Papayas, 6 bananas, 2 cups of coffee.  Large basket $ - 4 papayas, 10 bananas, morning coffee during your stay.  Please keep in mind the fruit may vary depending on what is ripe.  Coffee In order to preserve water we utilize clean non-smelling composting toilets. We also have 4 hot water showers, 2 sinks and vanity areas. Please keep showers to 5 min or less, Mahalo.  If you come with a 4-wheel drive vehicle you are welcome to drive farther up on to the property and park closer to your cabana, just follow the Parking signs. Expect dirt roads, uneven paths, wildlife, farm animals, insects, frogs, and nighttime sounds of the rainforest. Electricity is limited in some areas, and this is not a hotel or resort experience. Guests who enjoy nature, simplicity, and a sense of place tend to thrive here. Weekend Trip to The Kikala Waterfall Lodge

Wonderful cabin! WE loved hearing the river as we sat on the lanai and as we slept! The common-area building is fully stocked with cooking equipment, and there are two full bathrooms. Swimming below the enarby waterfall on the property was a joy. But we were only there for less than 24 hours. I am sure there is much more!

We stayed in 3 places on the island and this was by far our favorite. There was plenty of space, it was clean and lovely, well stocked kitchen, and the setting was beautiful including the swimming hole with waterfall! (which sadly we didn't get to go in as we were out so much)...as others have said, I would have liked to have stayed there longer and just enjoyed the property. Everything about it was easy and convenient. They even had a TV and DVD collection- though we were mostly offline for our week in Hawaii, it was perfect to watch a silly. movie on one of the nights. Would definitely go back, thank you Hamakua Guest House (Rover View Family House)!

We enjoyed our stay at the Tranquil Duck. It was nice and cool, which was great after a hot day. The shower was nice and we enjoyed coffee with the ducks and pea fowl. They were so cute! Very comfortable and a nice stay close to volcano national park and Hilo. We would love to come back!

Weekend Trip to The Tranquil Homestead

We loved Christopher and Esther's little homestead! The location was perfect: secluded and serene, but close enough to Hilo and Volcano. The ducks and peafowl absolutely made the trip. It brought us so much joy seeing them all waddle down to our spot to greet us, even if all they wanted was for us to feed them duck food! The place was clean, the kitchen was well stocked, and the hosts were super helpful and friendly. Will definitely be booking this again!

This could not have been a more perfect stay for my time on Big Island. Justine was so kind, thoughtful, and attentive to the reason for my trip to Hawaii. I was there to integrate the loss of my two pups, and with a grieving heart I felt so incredibly loved and taken care of by Justine. Her land is stunning and felt blessed to have permission to eat some bananas, try different foods, and have the option for fresh coconut from the property. I enjoyed learning about the life she’s created for herself as it was an absolute inspiration for me; knowing I too can create the same thing for myself. Communication and connection with her was effortless, and even bonded over a small issue with my rental LOL, girl power! One of my favorite things was the outdoor shower; LOVED being amongst the nature, wild and free. The bed was super comfy too. The comfort of the bed when traveling is a huge must; rest is important to me when I’m away from home. Yes, you will hear the frogs at night and will be woken up to the beautiful sound of roosters and birds in the morning (no sarcasm, I truly enjoyed nature’s alarm like and being witness to the cyclical aspects of nature). It’s not for everyone, yet if you know you have trouble sleeping don’t let that detour you from staying here. Come prepared; I know I don’t sleep well in general, any time I travel I bring ear plugs and my sound machine. Simple solutions. Thank you again Justine, you truly are a magical person and am grateful to have met you.

I loved the private location, the mesmerizing sound of the Koki frogs, the wild pigs and piglets, roosters, pheasants and chickens. The resident cats and dog were sweet and Christophe and Bonnie were just lovely people. We rented Scooters and visited many shoreline access points, and the recommendations for places to eat and check out were on point! Reading in the hammock and the hanging pod were favourites of ours, it was such a great home base for our Adventuring.

We stayed here for two nights with my wife. Even beyond what the reviews and photos show, Christopher & Esther were truly wonderful hosts, and The Tropical Duck is a beautiful place filled with charming animals. If you’ve found this place, I highly recommend staying here. The cabin had everything we needed, and everything was clean and very comfortable. We also tried the optional duck eggs for the first time—they were very large and delicious. Feeding the ducks, seeing peacocks up close, and spending time comfortably surrounded by Hawaii’s great nature was an unforgettable experience. Most of all, it made me so happy that my wife said she wished we could have stayed longer and that she wants to come back again. Next time we visit Hawaii, we’ll definitely return with our family and children. Thank you so much, Christopher & Esther!

Weekend Trip to Sunset Ocean View Studio

Jasmine was a wonderful host, welcoming and present without hovering. Her studio was perfectly located—close to Kona, a large grocery store and wonderful snorkeling and hiking—and it was very peaceful with bird sounds and an ocean view to the west right from the window of the screen porch for lovely sunsets. Everything was in great condition and it was spotlessly clean. The bed was super-comfortable. Jasmine’s suggestions for eating and adventuring were spot on. Just a wonderful, restorative place to stay on the Kona coast.

Clean cabin, helpful and responsive hosts, very quiet atmosphere. No street noise at all, just birds and rain. There are 2 dogs that can be noisy at times, and can steal your shoes if you leave them outside. Plenty of space inside to store them. Shower wasn’t working when we arrived but was fixed by the second day.
