Nestled in a beautiful lush wooded river valley in Western Wisconsin, Materfield, a women*-centered campground, offers the freedom of camping in your own space with the comfort of knowing other women may be nearby. Come on your own, bring a friend, or gather a small group. Wake beneath a canopy of trees. Rest in a netted hammock with a good book. Wander tended trails through the woods and down to the river. Watch for deer, birds, butterflies, and native wildflowers. Wade into the cool, spring-fed water or spend an afternoon tubing its gentle current before walking back up to do it again. Each campsite occupies its own woodland clearing on the property’s higher ground, surrounded by mature trees, hills, ravines, and natural vegetation that provide a sense of privacy and separation. Down the hill, a crisp spring-fed river runs along the entire northern edge of the property. Its sandy and gravel bottom and typically gentle current make it a beautiful place to wade, cool off, float, or relax on the beaches. (As with any natural river, depth and conditions vary with the weather and season.) Materfield has been kept primitive, allowing the landscape to remain the centerpiece. You’ll have the essentials: portable restrooms, potable water from a hand-pump well (bring containers), designated parking, a wheelbarrow for transporting gear to your site, tended walking trails, a communal campfire area, and tube rentals. This is simple tent camping and a chance for overnight forest bathing. Materfield is located in picturesque rural Wisconsin, where woodlands and working family farms share the river valley. You’ll see and hear birds, frogs, deer, wind in the trees, and waterscapes, as well as some tractors, livestock, and seasonal farm life. Explore the local scene full of farm stands, artisan food makers, wineries, and natural wonders. There are no RVs or hookups, no electricity or showers, and cell service is limited. Materfield is for campers who are comfortable with a simple outdoor experience and want the chance to slow down, explore, and surround themselves with nature. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful weekend on your own, time outdoors with friends, or a place to gather together, we’d love to welcome you to Materfield. Each site is set in its own cleared space with a view toward the water—some more open, some softened by the summer canopy. This is a shared campground setting, so neighboring tents may be visible, but each site has its own distinct feel within the landscape. Closest to the communal campfire area and one of the easiest sites to access, Goldenseal is a great fit for campers who want to stay near the heart of camp while still sleeping under the trees. This site has the clearest river view of the four, with a beautiful overlook from the hillside and easy access to the main footpath. Expect filtered shade, a lush woodland setting, and the gentle sound of the river below.

Wood Nettle Wood Nettle lies farther down the path, where the hillside feels a little quieter and more enveloped by the woods. Set in a clearing among the trees, this site is shaped by the same fern-covered ravines and sloping terrain that define the property, with glimpses of the river through the canopy. It’s a good fit for campers who want a more tucked-away feel while still remaining part of the shared campground.

Wild Ginger Wild Ginger is the farthest of the four sites from the main campfire area, giving it the most removed feel while still staying connected by the same woodland path. Nestled into the hillside among mature trees and native plants, it looks toward the river through the summer canopy and sits near the quieter end of camp. It’s ideal for campers who want the most peaceful setting of the four without being fully isolated.

Yarrow Yarrow sits just beyond Goldenseal along the hillside path and offers a lovely balance of convenience and calm. Tucked among the trees with a view toward the river, it feels slightly more removed from the campfire area while still being an easy walk to shared amenities. The surrounding woodland, ravines, and native understory give this site a peaceful, tucked-into-nature feel.

What an amazing spot! The site is exactly as described and honestly better. I felt safe the whole time, which is important as a solo female traveler. Floating the river was a great way to end the day. I will be back to Materfield the next time that I’m in Wisconsin.

It was very quite and secluded. It was great that it is for women only. Everything is mapped and marked out well. I was the very first guest to stay there and did give some recommendations for minor improvements, such as making a little less dark at night. It was a great stay and will definitely be back. Make sure you bring bug spray and if going in the river water shoes!
