Naked Falls is the second largest waterfall on the Washougal River. This section of the river has been a hotspot for Kayakers and Cliff divers for decades. If you like watching Salmon run, this is a great place to do it. This is easy car access to a raw outdoor camping experience. You will be camping next to the crystal clear Washougal River and have access to Naked Falls and Reeder Falls. Come prepared as the nearest potable water source is at least a mile away and you won't see any lights or electrical outlets on the property. There are portables toilet now between sites 4 and 5 on the east side of the road and between sites 15 and 16 on the west side. Portable toilets taken out in Mid October and put back in in Mid March. Firewood is not delivered to each site if you order it. There are many good reasons for this, not the least of which is that it can rain and then all the wood gets wet. We keep the firewood in a small woodshed and give you instructions on where to find it and what the code is before you check in. Also, please remember that I don't live there and there is limited service on the property. If you have questions, please contact me in advance as I may be unreachable when you arrive at the property. The Campsites mostly go in the order they appear as you drive through the campground. With some exceptions. Sites 8 and 11 (in that order) are up the hill from the fork at site 2. Sites 12 through 19 are in order on the West side of the river. There are signs with the site numbers next to each site. The sites each have their own parking spaces. Please see the brief descriptions below so you have a good idea of what kind of experience you can expect at each site. If you are not familiar with the area, or even if you haven't camped there before, I recommend contacting me for directions or information about the area before you go up. Also, if you have an RV, you will want to contact me to discuss which site you really want to book depending on the size of your RV, awnings, slide outs, etc. Each booked site is allowed 2 cars or 1 RV. If you have more than 2 cars or 1 RV, there is a fee of 10.00 per additional vehicle. Camping was banned all along the upper Washougal River in 2006 due to abuse from the public. An attitude that no one could be trusted up there formed and I lost my favorite place to camp in the whole world...but I understood why they did it. In 2017 I bought the property and worked with Skamania County to restore camping and the public trust in good people who love nature. There are now 20 campsites, mostly along the river, and I'm so pleased that the vast majority of Hipcampers are reliable co-stewards of this amazing recreational resource. It is up to us to keep Naked Falls available by keeping in mind that it is a crucial fish and wildlife habitat and we are but visitors there. Be sure to stick to trails and pack in/pack out. Nothing from town should be left there and nothing there should be brought back to town. *** Site 1: Saltness Creek This is the only site with direct trail access to the river on the camping side. It's also right on a creek and encompasses a corner of the confluence of the creek and the Washougal River. It's a nice open space right off the gravel road which allows you to park right by where you will set up tents and have your campfire. It also means other campers will drive right by your site and they will need to pass by it to take the trail to the river. This site is very convenient but not very private. Site 2: Naked Falls There is a short narrow trail that leads to the campsite on the Naked Falls cliff. It's awesome! This is the original campsite at Naked Falls and has likely been there for 100 years or more. It overlooks the waterfall and island downstream. It's really the coolest campsite but it's not for everybody. The area for pitching tents is smaller than at the other sites. Only 2 medium sized tents will fit comfortably. You may be able to cram 3 tents in but should be aware that it's only really meant for 2. Groups larger than 6 may want to consider another site. Also, it is right on the cliff where people like to jump so, while you have the best view of all the fun stuff happening at the falls, you also have cliff divers coming up to say hi during the day. Site 3: Desk Job This site is just past the falls. It has a wide short trail to the camping area and a beautiful view of the river that passes right by the site about 30 ft below it. It is nice, quiet and secluded. Site 4: Middle Management This site is nice for pulling vehicles in and around. It loops around some trees in the center. The trees to the east and North are all alders so it has limited shade in the morning when there aren't leaves on the trees (winter and early spring) The trail down is wide and short. There is a small opening with a nice view of the river and it's quiet. A great place to listen to the flow of the river and the beat of your heart. Site 5: Conference Room The Conference Room is tucked into the woods a little more than the other sites. It's right over the river just like all the rest of the sites but the trees like living on that cliff...like a whole bunch. You can walk to the edge and see the river but it's not the most open view of the river. I love this site. It has two old growth stumps from the first harvest ever at Naked Falls. They tell stories of the Yacolt burn and a lot of hard winters. A short narrow trail get's you from your car to to the camping area in about 20 steps. Site 6: Printer Jam This site is quite large and has the most extensive view of the river. Great for bigger groups or bigger tents. This is a chill spot where you can roast marshmallows while watching the flow of the Washougal River 35 ft below. Site 7: Budget Meeting This site is not meant for vehicle traffic! Please do not drive your vehicle onto the site as that has caused damage to the site itself and it needs to recover. The last site on the road has the longest walk...about 50 yards. It is also a large space and is the most secluded. It's the longest distance from river access but also the most private. The walk down passes an old growth tree that must have fallen decades ago. It has a huge base and the root structure is about 12 ft tall. There are a variety of trees that hug this campsite. If you don't mind the walk, you are sure to dig the vibe at our version of a Budget Meeting. Site 8: The Slash Pile Please read this full description before booking. I'm giving this site a go because I think it's a rather unique experience for the right people. This site sits up above all the river sites. It is not on a river but has a river view and view of all the other campsites. It is surrounded by a slash pile which is the wood debris left over from logging. You can drive right to it but only if you have 4wd/AWD. The road is also surrounded by alder trees that might slap the side of your car as you go up so if you are concerned about that, this is not the spot for you. There is not much shade up there either. You may want to bring a shade tent. The site is fairly large and has plenty of room for tents but I don't recommend any trailers or RVs here due to the steep rocky road. Your walk to the river will be about as long as the walk from site 7. It will be an easy walk down and a bit of a trek up. If no one books this site, I will totally understand but It's a cool spot if you are cool with the challenges it presents. Site 9: Hard Scramble Creek This site is embedded in the woods and has the most tree cover. It is even further from the river access than site 8...about a half mile walk. There is plenty of room but only one way in and out so turning around should be thought out before you set up your tents. Also, I've seen people pull off trailering large rigs up there but I'm pretty sure it was painstaking. If you have a large RV or Trailer, I would skip this site. Smaller trailers and RVs should be fine if you have some experience and patience. This site is quiet and the sound of the creek is soothing during the day and night. Site 10: Rock Beach Woods This site is in the woods along the river near an inviting rock beach that flows into a crystal clear swimming hole. This site is not behind a gate and day use visitors are allowed to use the trail and access the rock beach. The rock beach gets less traffic than we have right by Naked Falls but it is part of the day use area. This is a park and walk site. Parking is along the main road and you hike in about 50 yards to the campsite. This is one of the coolest campsites we have. Literally cooler as it is along the river edge and not along a cliffside like most of the other sites. Also cooler because it is under deep tree cover with soft mossy terrain. If you like the sounds of the river, shady woods and very close access to swimming, you will love this site! Site 11: This One Goes to Eleven! Situated on the top of the hill, this site has the most impressive views of all the sites! About a 270 degree view of the surrounding mountain region give you a great vantage point that often includes eagles flying below you, elk across the valley and a variety of other wildlife. This site is the farthest from the river, civilization and all the other campsites. If you are looking for something remote and have a 4wd/AWD vehicle, this might be the best site for you. Sites 12-19: All of these sites are right near the West side of the river. They were designed to accommodate RVs and Trailers. They are made for one trailer or RV per site or 2 camper vans. Tents are fine here too. There is easy in and out access to each site. It is nearer to the W2000 road and the sites are a bit closer together. There is still a significant amount of treed space between each site, just not as much as the original campsites. They each have a fire pit and cleared space for tents along with the graveled area for parking your RV. The sites are fairly level but not perfect and some leveling may be required depending on the size of your RV. This area has it's own trail down to the river or you can use the day use trail just a short walk North past the wooden Naked Falls sign. There are 3 total vehicles allowed at each of these sites (no exceptions) that includes the rv or trailer. So, truck and trailer count as one and you can have one addition car...or you can have 3 cars if you are car or tent camping. There is a charge of 10.00 extra for the third vehicle. No parking is allowed along the W2000 road unless you have a Naked Falls parking pass for day use. Site 0. This is the old site 12 that I had closed down. It is just up the hill from the fork at site 2. So at the fork near site 2, you will take a left and go up the hill about a quarter of a mile. It will be on your right hand side before you get to site 8. This is a large site part way up a hill surrounded by trees about 15 ft high. Very little shade, so you will want to bring a shade tent in the Summertime.

Site 2: Naked Falls There is a short narrow trail that leads to the campsite on the Naked Falls cliff. It's awesome! This is the original campsite at Naked Falls and has likely been there for 100 years or more. It overlooks the waterfall and island downstream. Site 5: Conference Room The Conference Room is tucked into the woods a little more than the other sites. It's right over the river just like all the rest of the sites but the trees like living on that cliff...like a whole bunch. You can walk to the edge and see the river but it's not the most open view of the river. I love this site. It has two old growth stumps from the first harvest ever at Naked Falls. Site 10: Rock Beach Woods This site is in the woods along the river near an inviting rock beach that flows into a crystal clear swimming hole. This site is not behind a gate and day use visitors are allowed to use the trail and access the rock beach. The rock beach gets less traffic than we have right by Naked Falls but it is part of the day use area. This is a park and walk site. Parking is along the main road and you hike in about 50 yards to the campsite. If you have an RV, you can park it in the parking area for site 10 but it won't make it to the campsite. Some folks love having the site and they park their RV in the parking area. That's fine but if you have a trailer in the Summer, you need to contact me to discuss first to get approval. Trailers are not normally allowed there at all. You can drive or walk to the portable toilet between sites 4 and 5. This is one of the coolest campsites we have. Literally cooler as it is along the river edge and not along a cliffside like most of the other sites. Also cooler because it is under deep tree cover with soft mossy terrain. If you like the sounds of the river, shady woods and very close access to swimming, you will love this site!

Site 7: Budget Meeting Site 7 has a tight entrance if you want to drive all the way to the fire pit. There is parking at the entrance to the site if you have a larger vehicle. Site 7 has ample space and is the most secluded. It's a longer distance from river access but also very private. The road to the site has an old growth tree that must have fallen decades ago. It has a huge base and the root structure is about 12 ft tall. There are a variety of trees that hug this campsite. If you don't mind the walk to the river trail, you are sure to dig the vibe at our version of a Budget Meeting.

Site 20 is amazing! It is next to and similar to site 10. It's right on the river and has easy access to the water. I love this site because it is right in the trees. Lots of shade and privacy. Great for hammocks and tree tents.

This is our newest site, right on the river!! It has its own private river access. It is a new site so it is a bit rugged but in a very pretty spot. Plenty of space for tents. You can sit by the campfire watching the river go by.

Mission Critical: This site is the closest site to Naked Falls. Your access is just a short walk to the steps at the main day use trail. It sits high above the river and well into the trees. Lots of shade for these hot Summer days. It has a big fire pit and plenty of space for tents. You'll park just off the main W-2000 road and have about a 25 yard walk in to the tent area. This is a cozy site...very new and a bit raw due to just being prepped. If you want to be close to the falls and enjoy solitude in the woods, this is a great option for you!

Table Stakes: This site is just a short walk form the main trail for Naked Falls. It sits high above the river and well into the trees. Lots of shade for these hot Summer days. It has a big fire pit and plenty of space for tents. You'll park just off the main W-2000 road and have about a 35 yard walk in to the tent area. This is a cozy site...very new and a bit raw due to just being prepped. If you want to be close to the falls and enjoy solitude in the woods, this is a great option for you!

It is surrounded by a slash pile which is the wood debris left over from logging. You can drive right to it but only if you have 4wd/AWD. There is not much shade up there either. You may want to bring a shade tent. The site is fairly large and has plenty of room for tents but I don't recommend any trailers or RVs here due to the steep rocky road. Your walk to the river will be about as long as the walk from site 7. It will be an easy walk down and a bit of a trek up. We have created a reserved parking space for site 8 at the bottom of the hill so you don't have to walk all the way to the river trail. You can drive one vehicle to the bottom of the hill and park in the spot with a sign that says, Reserved Day Use Parking Site 8.

Site 13 is the second farthest from the main Naked Falls trail of the sites on the West side of the river. It has it's own trail to a little shady creek that is only accessible from this site! It's pretty cool and great for hot days. There is a trail to to the confluence of a creek and the Washougal River but it does not yet have a good trail down for river access. Access is at the day use trail just past the wooden Naked Falls sign about half a mile up the road. Plenty of folks just walk but if you want to park in the day use areas, just buy and print a day use parking pass at [xxxxxxxx] or buy one at the Washougal River Mercantile for the days you want to park in day use. During the hot Summer months, you may want the day use access for convenience, outside of the busy season, it isn't as much of a factor.

Site 0 is large and surrounded by trees about 20 ft tall. Still very little shade there. Pretty Mountain views. It's about a quarter mile from the river so not a terribly long walk but it's uphill getting back from the river. Very private site. Recommend a shade tent especially in the Summer. You can drive or walk to the portable toilets between sites 4 and 5. During the Summer, there is a closer portable toilet just 50 yards up the hill by site 8.

Sites 12-19: All of these sites are right near the West side of the river. They were designed to accommodate RVs and Trailers. They are made for one trailer or RV per site or 2 camper vans. Tents are fine here too. There is easy in and out access to each site. It is nearer to the W2000 road and the sites are a bit closer together. There is still a significant amount of treed space between each site, just not as much as the original campsites. They each have a fire pit and cleared space for tents along with the graveled area for parking your RV. The sites are fairly level but not perfect and some leveling may be required depending on the size of your RV. This is the cabin I built with a good friend of mine. It's totally off grid and has been exclusively for my own personal use the last 8 years. I'm opening it up to others this season to see how it goes. It has running water through water catchment but only to the kitchen sink...no shower. Solar provides electricity but must be turned off at night. It sits on a full acre next to Saltness Creek. Great creek access and just a short walk to Naked Falls. You're thinking...this seems like a pretty good deal, there must be a catch...aannd...there is. The cabin is intentionally set on a hill where it can't easily be driven to. It's about a 35 yard walk uphill to the cabin. Not terrible but you probably want to pack light if you aren't down for taking several trips up the hill. This is a cool cabin built with our bare hands. It's in the woods and there are birds, deer, chipmunks, eagles and other animal friends all around. It has a cool firepit, axe throwing block and a weird toilet...so you know it's good. Oh about the toilet...it's a composting toilet...read the instructions and you'll be fine...easy to operate. If you're not a fan, you are welcome to use the portable toilets down the road.

We were expecting more privacy or easy access to the water. Campsite was small and very close to the neighboring sites. The trail to the water is long and steep. It leads to a very small gravel bar and swim area. Logs and debris clog the water as far as you can see in both directions, stealing away the beauty of the water.

Naked Falls was fantastic and camping near it was really nice! Site 8 was definitely exposed/sunny but there was enough shade during the morning to sit in and we tucked our tent behind some trees, plus it cooled down at night. Our 4wd did just fine on the road. Directions were clear and it was nice the road to the site had a padlocked gate, felt secure.

Although this site isn’t as private as some, it worked well for our 23’ camper and our family. We appreciated the easy river access and the porta-potty nearby. We were at the tail end of the scheduled service of the outhouse, so it was pretty full (and ripe). But grateful for it all the same! The campsite does have a picnic table! Naked Falls is such an incredible place. We loved our time there!

I'm super glad Steppen obtained the property and opened it back up to the public. I grew up on this River in the 1900s, sometimes with my pup tent right on the riverbed near the falls in early summer when the river is cold enough to keep your drinks and hot dogs fresh. It's always been a place our families protected since my great parents. You won't find any broken glass to get stuck in your feet around here! Good vibes and Good times! The swimming holes a literal playground. just don't dive off the cliff towards the only rock you can see because that rock comes halfway across the pothole down deeper. bring your snorkel and explore. wear some padding like a wet suit and your mask and ride the water shoots and small waterfalls from the bridge clear down to the falls. go over the falls head first and grab the edge, throw yourself into a spin. when you jump in the falls jump in the air bubbles or with the water for the softest landing. and if you find a gold bracelet at the bottom post it on the Facebook page. and for heaven sakes close the toilet lid in the porta potty so it doesn't stink for the next guy!!

Big private site above the river

Naked Falls is a beautiful spot on the Washougal River, and we had fun camping at the Table Stakes site. The site is large and you can't see any neighbors, though sound carries and you'll hear people distantly at times. It's a short walk-in from parking; a wagon and handtruck handled our stuff fine. The falls are close, and a little farther upstream there's another great swimming spot too. Propane fires are always allowed, which is nice. There's a portapotty close by. No cell service, but T-Mobile satellite texting worked. The site sits above the river, so the forest drops away below you and some of the treetops feel much closer than usual. We watched vultures cruising past and perched in the trees preening — bring binoculars or a scope if you have them. Also saw chipmunks, had a great sky full of stars, and heard something rummaging around camp one night, so keep your food put away. This is a newly built site, and the ground hasn't recovered yet so loose, dusty soil kicks up with every step, especially from dogs. It should improve as it settles, but for now I'd consider bringing a small pump sprayer to dampen the area where you hangout.

Wouldn't recommend because it was literally 80 dollars for a campsite, and that seems silly. Didn't go because I just got it as a backup in case the campground I wanted was full, and I got a space at my first choice.

We camped with some friends that had the site next to us. Great spots! Could walk from one site to the next using the trail. We have never camped via hipcamp so maybe this is standard but it seemed pricing was based on the number of people you had camping with you which can make it pretty spendy. We thought pricing was related to the private river access wethought we had, which we did not. It was weird seeing random people walking by our camp to access the river. What we thought would be a nice quiet afternoon to ourselves on the river near our site was shared with 15-20 other people. One of our young (11-16 year olds) kids was threatened with a parking ticket if we didn’t have a pass on the car. The man was pretty rude from the sounds of the interaction. If this is the same man we have seen from our previous visits to the falls (just the falls) last year he has always seemed rude. Having to pay an extra fee to access the falls itself was a bit silly. Parking for falls access should have been included with our site fee for as expensive as it was. Overall we had a great experience. One evening I wanted to go for a walk to see if deer are out. We walked directly out of our campsite and took a few steps onto the road and saw a doe. Few minutes later saw her two babies. We will definitely camp again as we love the falls and had a really nice 3 days close to the water.

I loved this place, the river, the nature etc. I asked the owner if I could arrive at 12 and park at the site to go to the river. He said that was too early for a 2:00 check in and said I would have to pay for a day pass for the 2 hours for 3 cars, which would have been an additional $45 on top of the $90 charge for camping. I told him I thought that was unreasonable and he actually made the argument that if I were staying at a hotel, I’d be charged an early check in fee. There’s a big difference between sleeping in the dirt with a porta potty. Not quite the same value. I think he’s over charging and maybe getting a little greedy. In the end he compromised and said we could arrive at 1:00 without paying an additional fee. Still left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Camping at Steppen's campground was over all a great experience. Only thing I would say that was not pleasant was the porta potty not being serviced as often as it maybe should have been. First day was fine, it's a porta potty i understand using them is not always fun. But by day 2 the campground was basically full of people and so were the the bathrooms. If maintenance wasn't possible more than once a week, then maybe a couple of extras for the campers would have been nice. I also would not say that the group sites would fit more than 4 people comfortably. We originally had 7 people planned for the trip but only 5 of us made it and that was a tight squeeze. Having an area to cook, park our cars and an area to have our propane fire was a close fit. Other than that, access to the falls, and distance between the other campers was perfect. I will return now that I know what to expect. I hope none of this deters anyone from camping here, it was beautiful and still worth it.

I loved camping here! The campsite we got was critical mission. Such a beautiful spot to camp at. It’s the closest campsite to the waterfall. It doesn’t have its own access but it’s only a 5 min walk down to the waterfall. The campsite was big enough for two small tents and a big one. You could fit more if you want to maybe two more tents could fit. Even though it doesn’t include this on the info, it does have a picnic table and there was a portable bathroom just outside the campsite. (Bring toilet paper)! It was perfect for my family and I! We will be back!

The site was large enough for multiple tents/vehicles with a porta potty that was very clean about a 100 yard walk uphill. The site is not level but does have a firepit and a picnic table. The river is the gem of staying there! If you decide to walk to the river it is ALL uphill on the way back so bring good bags to carry your stuff. It's gorgeous. There is a dayuse parking spot for you site (1) closer to the river but someone else not part of our party was using out spot which was a bummer. Would go back again.

Nice private spot and absolutely gorgeous swimming hole! Our kids had a blast. Be aware it is quite a walk from site 4 to the river trail (unless we missed something!) Luckily site 1 let us park in their driveway or it would’ve been hard to get to with kids and gear in tow. Would definitely stay again and try to snag a site closer to the river access!

We had such a wonderful weekend celebrating my 40th birthday. It was a perfect spot for our small group of friends to relax, reconnect, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The woods were peaceful and lovely, and the river was absolutely breathtaking. The host (Steve) was fantastic as well! Communication was easy and responses were quick. Everything felt very well taken care of. I couldn't have asked for a better setting for a birthday getaway in the woods. We'd highly recommend this cabin site to anyone looking for a peaceful, beautiful escape!
