Keen Lake Campground and Cottage Resort stands out as a unique destination steeped in rich history, dating back to 1814 when the Keen family first acquired land in what was then known as the Elk Forest tract. The resort office is situated on the original family homestead site, which tragically succumbed to fire in 1832. A fascinating feature of the resort is the gravity coal-mining railway system that once traversed the entire length of the campground. Campsites are thoughtfully arranged along the remnants of this historic rail system, particularly in an area known as Gravity Lane. The trains would have passed by the Movie Lounge and meandered behind the Game Room, crossing over two impressive stone bridges that anchor both the Main Campground and the Trestle Area Campsites. The remnants of the past are evident in the stone dam, constructed in the 1800s to facilitate the movement of canal boats, which has been recently refurbished for structural integrity. In addition to its rail history, the Keen family was also involved in the ice supply industry during the era of the Great Canal. Massive blocks of ice were harvested from the frozen lake and transported via the Gravity railroad to the Hudson Canal in Honesdale, eventually reaching Kingston, New York, where they were sold to
