Avid backpackers: we love it here!
We are avid backpackers and always prefer to be isolated in the wilderness, but found ourselves car camping for a few weeks while we evacuated wildfires in California. We were so delighted to find Clackamas River Farm! This was our first Hipcamp experience, so we didn't know what to expect. Our hosts Karen and Michael were super friendly and respectful of our privacy and COVID-19 precautions. They thoroughly answered our questions about the campsite through text, and when we wanted to learn more, they generously took time to chat with us about the farm and surrounding area,(maintaining safe distance, of course).
Our campsite was in the corner of a beautiful hayfield. With the car strategically parked to block views of our neighbors, we forgot there were other campers along the edge of the field. There was easy access to the river with a small grassy area on the bank for a few blankets or chairs. The river is inviting and gentle, with shallow banks on the camp side and a deeper bank on the opposite side - we watched fishermen on the opposite bank pull in 5 trout for dinner. While fly fishing, intermittent groups of weekend floaters drifted by, and a curious beaver zig-zagged between banks.
Camp amenities include a porta-potty and wash station with running filtered water, soap, disinfectant, and paper towels. Other than that, BYO everything. Perfect for minimalists campers like us.
Our weekend neighbors included a group of tent campers and several families in trailer campers. Their kids had a great time throwing frisbees and kicking soccer balls in the expansive open field.
Although Clackamas River Farm is an easy drive to artsy Estacada or trails around Mt. Hood, we were so relaxed that we spent much of our time on the property. After a week of camping at official state and county campgrounds, we fully appreciated the quiet and relative solitude of Clackamas River Farm. My husband, a life-long backpacker and camper, kept repeating that this was his hands-down favorite camp site in Oregon so far. I hope you will try it out, too!
Say hi to Karen and Michael for us :)
