Antelope Creek Campground sits just off Highway 191 between mile markers 96 and 97. While it is more accessible than other remote properties—you can reach us in a standard passenger car and park right by the bathhouse—the wilderness feels just as close. You can watch the local prairie dogs right from your lawn chair. This is also one of the premier stargazing locations in Montana. With minimal light pollution and wide-open horizons, the Milky Way is brilliantly visible on clear nights, and meteor showers put on a spectacular show. Wildlife & Exploration In the spring, sage grouse leks come alive within a short walk of the camp. Our permanent residents, the prairie dogs, provide a constant soundtrack to the plains. For those looking to explore, the Antelope Creek Wilderness Study Area is accessible through a pedestrian gate just west of the walk-in tent sites, offering coulees, ponderosa pines, and total solitude in every direction. The Surrounding Area Our "Mars Vista" point sits near the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, offering views toward the towns of Hays and Lodgepole, as well as Mission Canyon in the Little Rocky Mountains. If you need supplies, the town of Malta is just 20 minutes away and has everything you might have forgotten to pack.

A great example of land stewardship, and happy to support American Prairie. We (HJ and me) stayed by the pond, watching all the prairie dogs yeep at one another, looking at rocks, all in gratitude for the experience. Vast skies. wind and Montanas best. A real delight. Oh my gps was originally telling me Malta, so I would have overshot by miles if not paying attention.

What a lovely spot. Sleeping in the Prairie was an amazing experience and having the Prairie Dogs all around us was spectacular!! The hike with the interpretative panels was excellent. I learned so much and enjoyed the views while learning.

It was an interesting stay. We were able to walk to a few of the many information spots which was interesting. If you are a glamper this would not be the place for you. It is on land owned by the prairie conservation people. Tons of prairie dogs

Antelope Creek Milky Way Cabin
Because of the heat warning I opted to stay in a cabin that had ac and power. The place was immaculate. Clean bath house an potable water. My great grandmother's sister illustrated the first editions of the “little house” books. So I got to live my childhood dream of spending some time in a little house on a prairie. Thank you.

Best campground and setting! Trailer RV site was easy to pull into and level. Level as in front/back and side to side. And a spectacular bathhouse with a luxurious feel and wonderful design. The surrounding prairie is a sight to behold. Thanks to your npo organization and your mission we enjoyed hiking the campground interpretative trail, birding at the ponds and taking a day driving trip to other American Prairie units. We saw Buffalo!

Phenomenal site. Clean bathrooms and easy to access water. The view is outrageous and the neighbors (prairie dogs) are chatty. The hiking loop around the campground is the perfect early morning walk.

Very helpful campground host. Sites are clean and well maintained. Interesting 1.9 mile loop trail around the campground that reveals different features of the prairie. Signage on the highway could be stronger. Highly recommend.

What a gorgeous, perfectly quiet, and charming place! We were here in early July, when it was still green, and were entertained by the prairie dogs and verdant flowers. Nighttime was perfectly quiet--not a peep from the wildlife or people. Bathhouse is one of the nicest I've ever seen. A little buggy, except when there was a breeze.

Antelope Creek Stargazer Cabin
The cabin accommodations were great! They are small but they have lights, air conditioning/heat, and a few electrical outlets. They are very new. The wash house is one of the best we have ever experienced. Very clean! Even the toilet paper was not the cheap stuff. Campground is quiet. Remote location in Montana but easily accessible off of highway. Great walking trail with interpretive signs explaining the area and wildlife . It is on the prairie so you might need to bring some camp chairs to follow the shade. Be prepared for Prairie Dogs and Do NOT forget to bring bug spray. Loved the experience and would go again!

An unusual camping experience on the prairie. Great views, wildlife and wildflowers were abundant and beautiful. Showers, electric hookup and wifi were a bonus. The view from Site #8 was much better than ours. The interpretive trail was interesting but hard to find- the map of the campground could be easier to access.

Antelope Camp was amazing. The interpretative trail is top notch. Wonderful views and great hiking. Great showers/bathroom/dish washing. Owen the host was friendly and informative. Handy to have a dump site and water as well. We are so grateful for all that American Prairie is doing and really appreciated such a well thought out spot to camp.

Overall, we had a great experience for our camperized van for 2 nights. The bathrooms are large with private shower rooms but there are only 4 of them for everyone - both men and women. People were waiting even though the campground was mostly empty. Plan accordingly :). We were unable to fill our water tank from the single provided spigot since the water wasn't coming out of the threaded connection. I went to ask the camp hosts but they were not home. The sites are well separated and level. Hiking trail was in good shape and we even hiked through one of the gates for about 3 miles before turning around. Cell reception came and went but considering the campground location, I'm surprised we had any at all. This is our second time at this campground and hopefully won't be our last.

Staying at Antelope Creek Campground was a unique and pleasant experience. The birds and plants were interesting and being surrounded by Prairie Dogs was enjoyable. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The bathroom/shower facility is very nice. But be prepared for wind.

Beautiful Prairie, Limited Privacy
Antelope Creek Stargazer Cabin
Antelope Creek Campground is a well-maintained facility in a beautiful prairie setting. The cabins are comfortable, the grounds are well cared for, and the restrooms deserve special mention—they are among the cleanest campground facilities I have encountered anywhere. My primary concern is that the cabins are much closer together than the photos suggest. If you’re seeking solitude and quiet, your experience can be heavily influenced by neighboring guests. During my stay, one neighboring family of four carried on loud conversations throughout the day and late into the evening, often punctuated with profanity that carried easily between cabins. On the other side, another family allowed their children to roam freely to the point that they entered my cabin area twice while I was sitting on the front porch. These issues were not the fault of the campground staff, but the close spacing between cabins leaves little buffer from neighboring activity. As a result, the sense of serenity and immersion in the prairie can be easily disrupted when other guests are not mindful of those around them. The irony is that visitors come to American Prairie seeking vast open spaces and tranquility, yet the cabin layout can sometimes feel less secluded than a typical state park campground. The landscape is exceptional and the facilities are excellent; I only wish the cabins provided more privacy and separation to better match the experience that many visitors are seeking.

This campground is in a word…stunning! The RV sites are well spaced with electricity and water. And there is a dump station. The bathhouse is very clean and provides a dishwashing area for those in tents or cabins. The 2-mile interpretive trail is educational and offers great views of the surrounding land. The hosts were friendly and helpful. I would consider the prevailing winds when selecting a site for your trailer. We were in site 8, which worked out perfect perfectly for the very strong winds out of the W/NW. It’s truly Big Sky country.

I support the work of American Prairie Preserve and was very happy to get to visit some of their holdings. The Antelope Campground was very well laid out, the bath house very clean, and the camp host was very helpful. The campground is in the middle of a very large prairie dog town.

We are from western Montana and used to camping in heavily treed areas. We were excited to try camping on the prairie and experiencing Montana’s real Big Sky. As the saying goes: “Anyone can be happy in the mountains, but it takes a true soul to be happy on the prairie”. While the weather could have been better (very windy), the Prairie Dogs and abundance of birds made our trip special. We took advantage of the Shade Pavilion one evening to get out the wind and enjoy the animals and birds.
