The Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary was generously bequeathed to the Kennebec Land Trust in November 2016 upon owner Kendra Wakefield Shaw’s passing. Its 108-acres feature historic cabins and 4000 feet of frontage on Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner. The property’s coniferous and deciduous woods, vernal pools, and marshlands are important habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and plants. In 2018, the Maine Cabin Masters renovated two of the stream-side cabins, which now serve as rustic getaways for Hipcampers and the like. A small dock and canoes are available for use on the wide and deep flatwater stream! *NEW 2024 - A dock has been added to cabin 2, so each cabin now has it's own private dock. Please carry-out your trash after your stay. Thank you! Due to the sensitive wildlife habitat - no dogs are allowed at either cabin. If you're interested in staying a full week at the cabins, please message us directly for availability. Kennebec Land Trust members receive a 10% discount on reservations. Not a member? WakefieldWildlife Sanctuary Cabin 1

Cabin · Sleeps 6
Tucked among mature pines and hemlocks, projecting out over the edge of Cobbossee Stream, this off-grid (with solar) rustic cabin offers visitors an escape to nature in the Maine woods. The cabin is situated within the conserved 108-acre Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary. While the setting feels remote, it is remarkably central to many of Maine’s most popular attractions. The Kennebec Land Trust operates this cabin and can guide you to other nearby conserved lands for recreation.  Recently renovated by Maine Cabin Masters, the Eco-Cabins are professionally and artfully crafted. Cobbossee Stream is famous for its fishing, and at more than sixty feet deep it makes for wonderful swimming and recreation. The cabins are self-service and require a short hike from the parking area down a gravel road (luggage cart provided). This is one of two cabins on the property. Both have solar electricity for lights, small plug loads and to run a greywater pump. Both have a propane range, composting toilet, a sink with hand-pump for non-potable water uses and two double beds (bedding not included). Both cabins can accommodate up to a total of 6 people by bringing extra sleeping pads/bedding. The propane heating stoves are no longer operational. Please leave the cabin how it is found and carry your trash out with you when you leave. Due to the sensitive wildlife habitat - no dogs are allowed at the cabins. A small dock is near cabin 1 and canoes are available for use on the wide and deep flatwater stream! If you're interested in staying a full week at the cabins, please message us directly for availability.   Kennebec Land Trust members receive a 10% discount on reservations. Not a member?
