Mark greeted us immediately when we arrived and was incredibly friendly and helpful. The cabin is clean and cozy. The composting outhouse was one of the nicest I've ever seen! Relaxing by the firepit on a chilly morning was wonderful. Could not have asked for a better stay.

Me and my boyfriend recently stayed at this cozy cabin for a long weekend, and it exceeded all expectations — peaceful, rustic, and beautifully nestled in nature. The cabin was clean, well-maintained, and provided just the right level of comfort for a relaxing escape.
Mark was incredibly welcoming upon our arrival. He personally guided us to the cabin, which sits tucked away behind his home — far enough to feel private and secluded, yet close enough for easy access. He even provided us with firewood, which made our evenings by the fire especially cozy. Throughout our stay, he was respectful of our privacy but checked in just enough to make sure we had everything we needed. His local recommendations were spot on and really helped us make the most of our time in the area.
There’s a full bathroom with a warm shower just a short walk down by the main house, which was convenient and added to the “off-grid but comfortable” charm of the stay.
Overall, a wonderful retreat for anyone looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. We’d absolutely stay here again!

We spent a few peaceful days at this cozy cabin, and it was just what I needed. Nestled in the woods but not too far from the main road it offered complete quiet—a perfect place to unplug and recharge. The surrounding land was beautifully kept (lots of dears) with a very clean rustic outhouse and a modern shower. Huge thanks to the Tuttles for hosting us—they’re truly wonderful people. If you get the chance to visit, definitely ask them about their 3D-printed toys. Such a fun surprise! We will definitely go back.

Staying in this cabin tucked away in the woods was simply magical! A peaceful retreat surrounded by trees, fresh air, and a surreal atmosphere. We spent beautiful days as a family — grilling outdoors, enjoying the warmth of a campfire at night, and taking in breathtaking views. 🌲🔥
The girls loved exploring every corner, and we loved slowing down and enjoying each little moment. The hospitality was incredible — we were warmly welcomed and felt taken care of from the very beginning. Every detail of the cabin had a special charm and made us feel at home, even in the middle of nature.

We loved our weekend at Tuttles Homestead! Mark was very welcoming when we arrived and the cabin was cozy and clean, with a great firepit, grill, and outhouse. We definitely want to come back!

The cabin was absolutely perfect. It was nice and cozy and I loved the fire pit with the beautiful view. Mark and Trish were very sweet and have the cutest dog. My partner also said that the shower was wonderful

This cabin is wonderful, set in a peaceful, secluded spot. I believe the host hand-built it. The location is tranquil and has everything you could want. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the surrounding forest. The outhouse is impeccably clean and comfortable. Just down the road, there’s a hot shower and a source of potable water. The host kindly offered me an electric lantern, which was very useful since my headlamp’s beam is quite narrow. There’s also ample firewood available, so you can make a fire to enjoy some s'mores. Additionally, there are great hiking opportunities and boating activities nearby.

Mark and Trish are very friendly and were happy to show us around. They were very accommodating with our sudden requests, and at the same time they let us alone unless we reached out to them. Very peaceful, quiet, and pretty isolated. I had a stunning drive down the Kangamangus! Highly recommend this place.

Black Bear Lodge
Had a great time! Cabin is very well built behind host's home up on the hill. Very quiet patch of land with no neighboring lights making it great for looking up at night. Hosts are retired hobbyist who are very attentive to the needs of the campers and perfectly willing to demonstrate their passions if interested. They are also very knowledgeable of the surrounding area if excursions are desired in and around the quaint town of Porter, ME, but if not the site compliments itself for its own sake. Bring warm clothes and just enjoy getting away for a while!

The cabin is nestled in the trees far enough from the house and any other houses that it is private. The cabin is really well built, clean and comfortable. The owners of this property are exceptionally warm, inviting, and accommodating. The outhouse is incredibly clean and smelled pleasant! We enjoyed our stay here very much. The two picnic tables are large and there's a place for food so that bears don't get to anything (next to one of the picnic tables). The fire pit was very nice and wood we purchased from the owner was dry and easy to burn. It's rustic and absolutely lovely if you want to get away. Our cell phones (Verizon) worked from the campsite/cabin.

My experience at Mark and Trish’s Bear Lodge was wonderful. I highly recommend a visit. They were remarkably wonderful at communicating, welcoming me, and attending to all my needs. The Cabin is perfectly rustic, comfy, and a great location. I loved how quite it was, as if I were really remote, yet close to lots of fun things. Enjoy!

Mark and Trish were exceptional hosts. The cabin was comfortable and cozy. The sink and potable water were an added bonus.
Plenty of activities in the area to stay busy, lakes, trails and delicious ice cream within driving distance.

Mark & Trish’s cabin was so lovely, as was the setting. It was clear how much thought and effort they put into the space. So many thoughtful details- from the built in cooler to the local booklet guides. Mark and Trish were also wonderful- it was fascinating to hear how they built the cabin and to hear about future plans for their land! We can’t wait to stay again!

We had a wonderful stay at black bear lodge. The cabin was private and tucked away so it really felt like you were alone in the Maine wilderness. We were greeted by Mark and immediately shown to the cabin and made to feel welcome. He had recommendations of places to go and things to see and just so friendly. We spent our days traveling to Portland and OOB to explore and our nights back at the cabin playing board games, reading, and enjoying the peace and quiet of nature. We didn't get to use the fire pit as it rained the whole stay, but it looked lovely. Mark and Trish supplied plenty of wood and even a charcoal grill to use for cooking. The cabin was very clean and so was the "outhouse" type abode nearby. We especially loved getting to meet Mark and Trish's three beautiful Alaskan Malamutes (I asked specifically to see/pet them haha, otherwise they were kept fenced on the main property) I was concerned about making it up the dirt logging road to the cabin in my dinky Honda fit, but the road was cleared off and super well maintained by mark, my car had no trouble! He even got up early and cleared it off in his tractor after a particularly heavy storm the night before so we wouldn't have any trouble on the decent. We would 100% stay here again and would absolutely recommend black bear lodge to anyone :) If you want to camp somewhere more private and peaceful than a campground, but still want to be within an hour of the coast/ some top tourist destinations look no further!

The property was lovely and so were the hosts. The cabin was clean, well built, and roomy enough for our 3 daughters. The outhouse was clean and close enough to the cabin. Mark was very accommodating, helpful and pleasant. There is practically everything you need to comfortably camp and enjoy some peace and quiet. The hosts were easy to reach and replied quickly. There is a lot to do nearby and I saw places to eat as well. We found hiking nearby and plenty of sights to see. Unfortunately we had to leave a bit early due to the weather but they were very understanding. We will definitely come again, but once it's a but warmer out.

An amazing stay. The property is on an old logging property, and it's beautiful. There are several trails and some beautiful little ponds and meltwater rivulets. Mark and Trish were incredibly welcoming. They were very conscientious about checking in to make sure I had everything I needed. The cabin itself is lovely, with space for two mattresses and a pull out couch. The outhouse is very close to the cabin, and has a wonderful solar light, so it's easy to find in the dark. The fire-pit was just the right size, and having a campfire every night was amazing!
Overall, this was an amazing stay, probably the best I've ever had through hipcamp. I am definitely planning to go back when I have the chance.

The Black Bear Lodge is a hidden gem, a freshly-built rustic haven placed gently just away from civilization in SW Maine. Located only a few minutes from the NH border, this hand-crafted hideaway has all of the things you want from your next quiet outdoors outing: an off-grid kitchenette perfect for handwashing, doing dishes, and staging for meal prep, two full size picnic tables, a large fire pit, charcoal grill, built-in cooler/table, solar shower, and best of all, this cabin is *quiet*. If you're looking for a place to unplug for a while that won't require an investment in off-grid amenities and tooling, the Black Bear Lodge is THE perfect place for your next backwoods unwind.
Anglers- LISTEN UP:
I come to Maine every year from TN solely to camp and fish. This year I hauled my 17' bass boat, of which Mark & Trish were very accommodating. They had plenty of room for trailering and turning around, offered a place to plug it in so the batteries could charge overnight, and everything worked out *perfectly*. There are lots of local lakes nearby which offer exceptional bass fishing, too. I didn't drive more than a half hour in any direction and was able to hit a different lake/pond every day of my week-long stay, and that's just in Maine! If I had my NH fishing license, I could've hit a dozen more within that same driving distance.
The hosts are incredibly nice & helpful people. They cared for me like I was family. I will surely come to stay again at the Black Bear Lodge!

The cabin Trish and Mark built and hosted for myself and three friends was a tiny peaceful oasis.
The warmth and love that Mark and Trish exude was contagious and beautiful.
All of us appreciated the craftmanship and hard work that went into a place of stillness and quietness.
We are so grateful for Trish and Mark's hospitality and thoughtfulness.
Life can be so hectic and strenuous, and their cabin gifted us peace.

We spend a sweet & short weekend in Mark & Rush’s home and forest (Hogwarts castle and forbidden forest - somehow, I think that’s what inspired them). The black bear cabin they built was lovely, private, and spacious for a family of three. Mark & Trish was very warm and generous hosts!
We set up a campfire and had BBQ at night, and I also enjoyed visiting Mark’s farm in the morning. They make maple syrup, brew beers and grow vegetables on their farm, and gave us some for trying. The taste of the vege was really fresh. We were really admiring the self-sustain lifestyle. It was amazing they only began to develop everything on their land three years ago.
Their cabin is located within an hour's drive on beautiful country road from white mountain, Sebago Lake and Portland. So it’s also convenient to visit NH and southern Maine on the same trip!
We wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely consider going back!

I loved the cabin! It was clean and very private! You will need your own sleeping pad and sleeping bag! The couch also pulls out in to a bed! The hoses were so kind and live on the cutest homestead!
