Veterans, see below* The Indian mounds at Frenchman’s Bend, within walking distance, are over 5,000 years old and among the earliest known mound sites in North America. Poverty Point, about 50 miles away, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with massive earthen mounds built over 3,000 years ago. Nearby Black Bayou National Wildlife Refuge offers wildlife viewing and paddling opportunities. * Veterans and up to 3 guests get one night's fee refunded at checkout so that Veterans stay free for a night. Army veterans will likely receive some lagniappe. Veterans may bring up to three people and the telescope experience is included at no cost. Fun Fact: The archaeological research shows that the mounds at Frenchman’s Bend are very ancient, on the order of the Middle Archaic period.
