This area stands out as one of the first wildlife management sites acquired by the Linn County Conservation Board, showcasing a rich tapestry of oxbow wetlands and ponds that were formed during the sand quarrying for the construction of IA Hwy. 13 in the 1970s. Wakpicada offers primitive camping with eight designated sites, each equipped with fire rings. While there are no electric or water services, visitors can enjoy the rustic experience of camping in nature. Facilities include pit vault toilets, and the area is also open to equestrian camping, making it a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The natural area features a boat ramp for easy access to the river, as well as hiking and equestrian trails that wind through its picturesque landscapes. It is a popular spot for hunting, particularly for waterfowl, and boasts restored remnant prairies that add to its ecological diversity. Activities abound at Wakpicada, including boating, fishing in the Wapsipinicon River, and pond fishing in the former sand pits.
