The Neature Preserve (formerly known as "Tabby's Trees") consists of 74 acres made up mostly of pine forest situated in the coastal plain. A creek runs along the western boundary of the property with an ephemeral (seasonal) wetland to the southwest. The overstory of the forest is dominated by loblolly and slash pine with a few longleaf pine sprinkled in, as well as turkey oak, live oak, laurel oak, and sweetgum. We have ~1.5 miles of trails that wind through a variety of ecosystems (trails can hiked or biked). The property has three primitive camping sites. Two of the sites are for tent camping only (where you would park your car along the hiking trail and then follow a separate path to get to the campsite), with one site that has enough space to park multiple cars or small camper right at the campsite. The Neature Preserve is all about restoring native habitat! Prescribed fire is used at The Preserve to safely and efficiently restore and maintain productive ecosystems and to support our native plant and animal species. Info about prescribed fire as well as other restoration practices and projects going on at The Neature Preserve can be found below. View more photos and learn more about the wildlife and plants that inhabit The Preserve as well as the habitat management plan on the "The Neature Preserve" Facebook page. Prescribed Fire: - The interior of the South Loop was burned for the first time (in recent history) on February 14, 2024 and again on April 17, 2025. - The interior of the North Loop, along with the similarly sized unit just east of the North Loop, was last burned April 11, 2023 Timber Management: - Future plans include a timber thinning to reduce canopy density, clear cutting some sections to be replanted in longleaf pine. Wetland/Bog Restoration: - Currently in progress: 1) Canopy and midstory reduction (cut, pile, and burn) to support native, understory species 2) Planting rare species, such as pitcher plants, to help improve their population size and genetic diversity

Pine Cove (Primitive Campsite)

100%
(9)
Tent site · Sleeps 8
Reconnect with nature at Tabby's Trees where you can relax at the Pine Cove campsite in a beautiful southern pine forest. The Pine Cove campsite is on the interior of the south loop trail, a short walk from your parking spot (about 40 yards away). Pine Cove has a leveled site for a tent and a fire ring. Enjoy birding, hiking, and communing with nature in the privacy of the forest. This site is also close to the ephemeral creek and seasonal wetland. This is a primitive campsite, so there are no bathrooms or running water at the campsite, but you are welcome to refill your water from the spigot at the water tank near the host trailer. Power outlets (to recharge/use electronic devices) and a bathroom/shower at the host trailer are available to use upon request. Access to these is not guaranteed (for example, if I am out of town during your stay), so please reach out early if these will be important to you during your stay. George L. Smith State Park is only about 5 miles away with historical buildings and native ecosystems including pine savannas, sandhills, and a lake sprinkled with beautiful cypress trees throughout.

Bracken Fern Hideaway

100%
(5)
Tent site · Sleeps 8
The Bracken Fern Hideaway primitive campsite is situated along The South Loop, amongst a biodiverse pine savanna, about 100 feet east of the trail and the campsite's designated parking spot. This site is surrounded by one of the most beautiful ecosystems on the property, with loblolly and slash pine above and a blanketed understory of bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum), wiregrass (Aristida beyrichiana), eucalyptus wild indigo (Baptisia perfoliata), as well as a plethora of other native grasses and wildflowers. You can find easy access to the [ephemeral] creek (that makes up the western boundary of the property) by turning left out of the campsite and continuing [south] along The South Loop Trail. All campsites on the property have a fire ring and a leveled site for a tent. When you book a campsite at The Neature Preserve, you are given access to all 75 acres of the preserve including ~1.5 miles of trails that wind through a variety of ecosystems. I live in the trailer along the Main Drive, but otherwise you [and your group] will have the whole property all to yourselves! Commune with nature in peace at The Neature Preserve!
