The Lock & Dam Regional Park at Coosa River Campground in Rome, Georgia, stands out as a unique destination due to its rich historical significance and natural beauty. Spanning 73 acres, this park is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks, featuring the Mayo Lock and Dam, which was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1913 and decommissioned in 1941. Nestled along the Coosa River, just south of Rome, the park is renowned for offering some of the finest crappie and striper fishing in North Georgia. Birdwatching enthusiasts will also find a haven here, with diverse avian species to observe. Adjacent to the park is the Coosa Nature Preserve, an additional 127 acres managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Rome Floyd Parks & Recreation, providing even more opportunities for exploration and enjoyment of the local ecosystem. The campground caters to both RV and primitive tent campers, with select sites featuring direct sewer hook-ups and stunning river views. Visitors can enjoy picnic pavilions, fire rings, restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities, along with well-maintained fishing and nature trails.
