Mono Loco Flats sits on a Mesa nestled in the Sangre de Cristo mountains near Sangre De Cristo creek and La Veta Pass. Growing up in Southern Colorado I was fortunate to explore this zone as a kid and I feel fortunate that I can share Mono Loco Flats with others. Set up camp and enjoy sweeping views of Mount Blanca and the surrounding Sangre De Cristo mountain range. This 15 acre camp is situated just off highway 160 for easy access, approximately 25 minutes from The Great Sand Dunes Natianal park and Zapata Falls. Mono Loco Flats is an excellent home base for exploring the San Luis Valley. Sangre de Cristo Creek is a short hike or drive to the south. Fort Garland is a 10-minute drive. All three sites provide 360 panoramic views with epic sunrise and sunset views of Mount Blanca. Wild horses and prong horned antelope may wander the Mesa as you enjoy your camp. The natural beauty of these three campsites is worth protecting so please if you pack it in, pack it out. This is a dry camp with no toilet or garbage facilities. Please treat this land with respect so that future campers may enjoy the land free of rubbish. All three campsites are accessible with any type of vehicle, and the long driveway and turnaround can accommodate any trailer or RV up to 20'. Set up camp and enjoy sweeping views of Mount Blanca and the surrounding Sangre De Cristo mountain range.  This camp is situated just off highway 160 for easy access. Mono Loco Flats is 25 minutes from The Great Sand Dunes National Park, Medano Creek and Zapata Falls.  Sangre de Cristo Creek is a short hike south. Fort Garland is a 5 minute drive west.  This mesa provides 360 panoramic views with epic sunrise and sunset views of Mount Blanca. Wild horses and prong horned antelope may wander near camp.  This site can accommodate a tow behind trailer of up to 20ft. and is definitely accessible to any type of car or truck....4x4 is not necessary. This land is very special and is fragile despite its beauty so please tread lightly. This is a pack it in pack it out site with no toilets or garbage facilities. As you explore the area you will see the lichen, cactus, sage and Pinon. This ecosystem is fragile and worth protecting so please, no wild harvesting firewood. Firewood is available in Fort Garland, but the Trees and Shrubs that grow on Mono Loco Flats grow quite slowly and the only way to continue sharing this land with more people is by allowing the ecosystem to thrive without too much disruption. So please come and enjoy this 15 acre site tucked in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains:)

Site 2 on the Arroyo is a simple roundabout with a stone fire ring at its center. The camp site is at the edge of the gentle ravine with an amazing view of Mt. Blanca and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Pinon trees frame the view and you may see the seasonal herd of deer that often bed down amongst the trees and shrubs throughout the ravine. This site can accommodate a tow behind trailer of up to 20ft. and is definitely accessible to any type of car or truck....4x4 is not necessary. This land is very special and is fragile despite its beauty so please tread lightly. This is a pack it in pack it out site with no toilets or garbage facilities. Site 3, Blanca Vista sits at the Northeast corner of the 15 acre property and has uninterrupted views of Mt. Blanca and the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. The campsite is situated at the end of a 200 yard "bumpy" but very manageable dirt driveway. This site can accommodate any type of vehicle and up to a 20 foot trailer. The site is a simple dirt roundabout with a stone fire ring at its center and has 360 degree view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Mesa. This land is fragile despite its beauty so please tread lightly as you explore the area. The Lichen, Sage, and Pinon are a few examples from the thriving ecosystem you will see around the campsite and they require our respect and care as they are slow growing and easily damaged, so please no wild harvesting of firewood at this site. The small Pinon trees throughout the property can be well over a hundred years old despite their small size, they are a resilient tree but highly susceptible to our influence so please tread lightly. This is a pack it in, pack it out site with no bathroom or garbage facilities. I am thankful I can share this land, so please keep it free of rubbish so that future campers may do the same:) Site 3 is a great spot and I hope you enjoy it:)

Beautiful area with great views. . Stayed at site 1 and there where others at site 2, wouldn’t even know they where there. Good spaced out sites. Being holiday traffic a lot of cars heading up and down the highway. Overall highly recommend.

Great spot! We had site #2 and loved the location. It was a little windy (mostly in the afternoon), but the stars at night and the privacy made up for that. There were no other campers at the other site when we were there, but they seemed far enough away that it would not have mattered. It was a really nice touch that there was firewood in the firepit for us to use. We didn't use it though because it was windy and I was nervous about anything spreading. I have 4 small kids so we would have been doing a fire earlier in the evening before bedtime. After the kids were in bed, it was calm enough to have had a fire if I wanted. Also, I was able to get my remote Wifi to pick up a little signal there. Thanks for a great stay. We'd definitely stay again.

It’s 100% as advertised! Beautiful views, quiet but close to the highway! Loved the opportunity to see the Milky Way and do some star gazing. The sky was amazing.

Directions were clear and the sites were easy to find. Well maintained and cared for sites that offer great views. I enjoyed my stay and would recommend Mono Loco Flats to anyone visiting Great Sand Dunes or passing through the San Luis Valley.

Site 1 The Mesa
The Mesa was a wonderful campsite! Views were stunning in every direction. The two other sites on property are far enough away that it still feels private. The campsite had plenty of space! Our car, tent, and canopy fit with tons of extra space. The picnic table was great to have too! The fire pit had some wood leftover from previous guests that we used but ultimately opted against a fire because of winds. We didn't end up having to use the firewood we brought but the fire pit was nicely constructed! It is 35 min from the site to the National Park (the longest portion being the main road into the park). You'll pass through two small towns (Ft Garland and Blanca) between the site and the NP, in case you need to pick anything up. Mario's communication was great! We had zero issues and would stay here again :) If you're unfamiliar with the area be aware that there is NO shade and it is VERY windy. We were familiar with the area so came prepared with a canopy that way we could have shade during the day at our site but we would not have been able to use it without the weights we brought due to high wind.

We were unlucky with the weather the one night we were here (wind and thunderstorms) but the site was nice and the host even left us some firewood (which we couldn't use due to the aforementioned weather). The highway notwithstanding, the surroundings are absolutely beautiful, but to be honest, the nearest dwelling having a billboard sized Trump sign painted on the side of it kind of soured the mood.

Beautiful views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (Mt. Lindsey, Blanca Peak, and Little Bear Peak to the north, especially)! Not much cover with low trees & sage brush, but this site offers stunning views of the San Luis Valley and surrounding area. Just 25 minutes from the Great Sand Dunes and Alamosa, CO. Perfect campsite, perfect stay. Thanks, Mario!

Great location! Close enough to gray sand dunes NP and very easy to find. Was mostly alone - could see other campers but not close enough to hear or be bothered by them. Very nice sight with great space - beautiful views and far from other groups - felt very remote, in a good way! But very close to highway

We loved this campsite! It was just what we needed. Not too far from the main road but far away enough to feel out in nature. Amazing views of the sunrise and sunset and even got to see some deer! Highly recommend this site!

This was my first hip camp experience. We used it as a home base for 2 days to do some hiking at rio grande del Norte. I Thoroughly enjoyed staying here. 360 views are breathtaking. Very peaceful and lots of space between you and other camp sites Definitely hoping to stay here again

This was our 3rd time at Mono Loco Flats + our favorite. In late September, the mountains are dotted with gold + orange and the weather was beautiful. We can’t wait to come back next year!

Gorgeous views with mountains all the way around and lovely sunrises and sunsets, just as the description says! You can see the highway and some other houses not too far off in the distance, so during the day it doesn’t feel completely secluded, but it’s private enough and the camp feels very isolated and peaceful at night. There are cacti mixed into the plants surrounding the site, so not ideal for exploration beyond the small clearing, but the site itself is well maintained in a perfect level circle and clear of hazards. It’s the perfect stop for a chill home base and good night’s rest! I enjoyed my time there and the serenity the surrounding land provided.
