Trout Corner is a great spot tucked in the Santa Lucia Wilderness mountains. Varonica has thoughtfully set up the site with helpful amenities for a enjoyable start, a heated water shower, a well-kept outhouse, evening camp lighting, a power outlet (a real plus for multi-night stays), and a cozy fire pit. Being greeted by the host both on arrival and departure made the stay feel welcoming. The location under the oak canopy with the creek running through felt completely removed from everything, in the best way.
A few honest notes for future campers: the road in is a real adventure, several creek crossings listed are best traveled with a high clearance vehicle, but AWD or 4WD is borderline necessary. Plan to ride in and stay; the remote location makes driving in and out multiple times impractical. WiFi is available for emergencies only, so download offline maps and entertainment before you leave home. Bring serious insect repellent if you're mosquito-prone. Wear appropriate footwear for hiking, creek levels vary by season.
The wooded setting means only a small fire pit for cooking, so plan your meals accordingly. Wildlife was as expected in the wilderness, no bears sighted; we did spot deer, and our dog kept nighttime visitors at bay. Nearby hiking trails are a highlight. I brought a first-time camper and the available amenities made this an ideal introduction to the outdoors. Highly recommend.

It was pretty far from any city, lots of creek crossings so definitely needed a sturdy car. Once we got there we loved it. Very cool set up with compost toilet, lots of space, right next to a beautiful creek. Chairs, WiFi, and fire pit provided as well. My four year old son had a great time.

Creek Crossing Camp
Had a great time camping on varonicas land! Definitely need a higher clearance vehicle to get there, but so worth it. The creek crossings were very fun, the nearby trails were very cute. And the campgrounds were very nice and private. Bathroom was very clean and warm water for showers was very much appreciated.

Amazing location! The campsite even had wifi in the middle of the mountains haha! We booked during a rainstorm and still were very comfortable with our canopy over the entrance of our tent. Thank you so much!

If you’re looking for complete disconnection from the modern world, Upper Lopez Creek offers a unique and raw camping experience—but it's not for everyone. This place is ideal for seasoned campers who enjoy solitude and don't mind rugged conditions. If you're expecting convenience or family-friendly amenities, this may not be the right choice.
### Pros:
* **Secluded & Peaceful**: Located deep in the mountains with only two campsites, this place offers unmatched privacy and quiet. The surrounding forest is beautiful and undisturbed, making it perfect for those who want to escape the city and embrace nature.
* **Truly Off-Grid**: No noise, no traffic, no distractions. Just you and the wilderness. For those seeking introspection or digital detox, it’s an ideal setting.
### Cons:
* **Challenging Access**: Getting there is not easy. There are 14 creek crossings, and you absolutely need a **high-clearance vehicle** like a Jeep. My SUV wasn't high enough—I cracked my windshield and may have caused undercarriage damage. Regular sedans or standard SUVs are not suitable.
* **Host Absence & Arrival Confusion**: When I arrived, the host wasn’t present. I had to honk and shout until a stranger helped guide me. It turned out he was the other camper, but the uncertainty was unsettling as it got dark.
* **There’s no cell signal, and the promised Wi-Fi didn’t work despite the host’s instructions. If you need to contact someone or use your phone for navigation, you’re out of luck.

Excellent location right on the creek. Quiet, we were the only ones there. Short 15 min hike to Big Falls trailhead which is a great trail to a waterfall the kids had a lot of fun at. Cabana was great for all three of us to sleep, hot shower, bathroom.

The site was very well kept, super pretty with water right through it. The trail nearby was also very nice and easy ! Unfortunately the description didn’t prepare us enough for the 14!! creeks you’ll drive through to get there and i definitely recommend 4wd. Communication could’ve been better as host told me we’d be the only campers but had others wake us up at midnight coming into the site. Our first day/night was good though.

We booked Trout Corner for 4th of July weekend and it was lovely! Host was friendly and responsive. The space was super nice and we could hear the creek the whole time. There a lot of little gnat flies but they don’t bite and once you light your fire they disperse. The spot is super close to the Big Falls Trail, which is a beautiful hike! Fair warning: the post says you don’t need 4x4 wheel drive but I would highly recommend 4x4 wheel drive. At least a car that has some clearance as you do have to drive through shallow parts of the creek. Overall, we enjoyed the privacy, nature, and the relaxing atmosphere! Would definitely book again!

We crossed the creek 13 times (I think😊) while we were driving towards Varonica's place hidden deep in the wilderness. We saw deer, a bear, domestic pigs and dogs on the way. Getting there was a true adventure!
Trout Corner was just what we wanted: an isolated place surrounded by nature. The soothing sound of the creek right next to the campsite was so relaxing to hear all night. Our dog loved running into the creek, and he was happy to sniff around without his leash.
We didn't even set up our tent, we just used the canopy that was already there.
There's an outlet with electricity. Bring an extension cord and you can have electricity inside the tent.
