Shady Knoll is a working ranch. We have chickens, horses, pigs and lots of wildlife on the property. Full disclosure, we do have roosters. We are 5 min to Rollins lake, 45 min. to an hour from Tahoe ski resorts and 20 min. to charming Grass Valley and Nevada city. The area offers endless opportunities to explore historic gold mining towns, rivers, lakes and streams. We are about 50 minutes to Downieville with its awesome mountain biking.Come and enjoy the beautiful fall weather here in the Sierras and stop by our local pumpkin patch! Bring the kids and stop by Rollins lake or go to many of the hiking trails or rivers that our area has to offer. Or just come and relax and watch some football. After you get your play in the sun take a tour of our farm where you will get up close and personal with our animals. You will meet dusty our horse as well as Gary, sunrise and curly our pigs. We also have chickens and two friendly dogs named Snoopy and Leo. Petunia our potbelly pig will come by and say hi in the morning too. You’ll likely be greeted by our friendly lamb Prince Woolium. We provide snacks to feed the animals and most of them love to be pet. Under the Oaks is a guest house that is fully equipped for a relaxing stay on our farm. The house features a walk in shower, laundry, kitchen, full size refrigerator/freezer and plenty of seating areas to relax and recharge all under the shade of old growth oak trees. Downstairs sleeping accommodations are a queen size Murphy bed and a couch that can be configured to be a king size bed. Upstairs features a fold out couch and a queen size air mattress if needed. Under the Oaks is 10 min from Colfax, 50 min to Boreal and 20 min from Grassvalley and Nevada city. Bring your mountain bike to enjoy world class trails in Downieville which is appx 45-50 min away. Rollins lake is less than 5 min away. Explore the endless lakes, rivers and streams in the area and come home to a relaxing bon fire at the end of your day.

Under the Oaks

My family and I really enjoyed our stay! The space was cute, cozy, and modern, with a clean and comfortable feel that balanced nicely with the peaceful countryside surroundings. The adorable animals made it even more special — the friendly farm dog, Leo, was so sweet and social, and the pigs were just a short walk down the hill from the space and so much fun to visit. The host was very kind and responsive, which made everything smooth and easy. It was a wonderful spot to relax and spend time together. Would definitely recommend!

I found this wonderful place on HipCamp. But it is actually a home, fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. Kelly was very thoughtful and set up everything to endure her guest feel comfortable and have a great experience. And we did.. Our party was four adults, there was a sleeping quarter upstairs with the air condition. Everyone rested comfortably.. the kitchen was full equipped, there were two TVs. The bathroom was a nice size . Guess who stayed upstairs can have an access to the bathroom through the side door. The house was very clean and new. We came and stayed during 4 July weekend. It was very peaceful. Kayleigh was very accommodating and communicative but also gave us the privacy. I love animals in the farm. There are two dogs were super friendly and playful. Leo and Snoopy helped welcome us. We also visited pics, goat, horse. etc. I don’t think this is a wonderful place for family with kids and also for adults. Too bad that we only stayed for two nights.

Five Stars - A Hidden Gem! We had such a great experience staying here! Honestly, the pictures don’t do it justice—this place was even better in person. It was spacious, peaceful, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful; they even went out of their way to help us with a missing ingredient for our dinner, which we really appreciated. The property had a great vibe, and the animals added such a fun and relaxing touch to the experience. Highly recommend—can’t wait to come back!

Fantastic little get away!

Our family's stay at Shady Knoll ranch was fantastic. Kelly and Megan were wonderful hosts, making us feel at home and even treating us with homemade lemonade. The kids loved feeding the pigs, but the real star was Leo the dog - he was so great with our toddlers that we're now considering adopting a dog ourselves! We didn't notice any noise from roosters during our stay. The ranch's location is perfect for exploring the area, and our trip to Donner Lake was the most chilling break from the summer heat. It is a unique and memorable experience for families looking for a taste of ranch life.
