Welcome to Coyote Howls, a unique campground that combines natural beauty with a rich history of community spirit! The Coyote Howls project was initiated in response to the need for sanitary facilities for the many campers visiting the nearby Gunsite Wash, located just two miles south of the current Coyote Howls Campground. In 1979 and 1991, local residents recognized this need and took action. They leased 207 acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land at an affordable rate of $1 per acre, laying the foundation for what would become a beloved camping destination. Initially managed by the Why Utility Company, Coyote Howls fostered a sense of community from the very beginning. During its early days, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were hosted in local homes, where the campground owners provided the turkey, while campers and residents contributed the side dishes. This collaborative spirit helped forge strong bonds among the community. As the campground flourished, discussions arose about the necessity of a community building. The land for this project was acquired from the BLM under the Public Purpose Act, and funding was generated through various community events, including fish fries, barbecues, and bake sales.
