Escape to Camp Gibraltar, a locally owned wilderness camp on the shores of Gibraltar Lake, just five miles south of Kokhanok Village in Southwest Alaska. Nestled at the headwaters of the Gibraltar River — one of the largest sockeye salmon runs in the world — this off-grid destination offers guests a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Alaska’s wild beauty, cultural heritage, and peaceful solitude. 🏕️ The Space Camp Gibraltar features three cozy weatherport cabins, each outfitted with twin beds and simple furnishings to comfortably sleep up to six guests total. A fully equipt kitchen, composting toilet, and a traditional wood-fired steam bath provide everything you need for comfort in the backcountry — all while keeping your stay eco-friendly and low-impact. Our camp is designed for guests who value authentic Alaskan living, breathtaking scenery, and meaningful connections with the land and community. 🌅 What You’ll See Wake up to crystal-clear views of Gibraltar Lake surrounded by tundra hills, alpine peaks, and endless sky. Watch for brown bears, moose, eagles, and caribou, or witness the incredible sight of sockeye salmon running through the lake and river in late summer. Every evening, the sunset reflects over the still waters — a perfect end to the day. 🎣 Things to Do Fishing: Cast your line for world-famous sockeye salmon or lake trout. Explore Nature: Hike, paddle, or simply relax lakeside while wildlife passes by. Cultural Experiences: Connect with the nearby Kokhanok community through guided tours and workshops highlighting Yup’ik and Dena'ina knowledge of plants, animals, trails and subsistence fishing. Relax & Recharge: Enjoy the wood-fired steam bath, cook local-inspired meals, or sit by the campfire under the northern sky. 🚙 Access Camp Gibraltar is accessible by floatplane or UTV/ATV from Kokhanok. We help coordinate travel so your journey into this pristine wilderness is safe, smooth, and unforgettable. 🌿 What to Expect This is an off-grid Alaskan adventure — rustic yet comfortable, remote yet welcoming. We’re a 100% locally owned operation, proud to share the land’s natural riches and the deep cultural roots of our community.🌄 Space & Setting Guests at Camp Gibraltar enjoy exclusive access to a spacious lakeside property surrounded by wild tundra, open sky, and panoramic views of Gibraltar Lake. The camp is intentionally small and personal — designed to host a maximum of six guests at a time, ensuring privacy, quiet, and an immersive wilderness experience. Each weatherport tent sits with plenty of space between for privacy and unobstructed lake views. There’s ample room to wander, explore, and relax — whether you’re taking sunrise photos by the shoreline, enjoying morning coffee near the communal kitchen, or stargazing from your weatherport tent under the northern sky. 🔧 Access to Amenities All camp amenities are located within a short walk (1–3 minutes) from each weatherport. The camp is rented out as a whole unit. A fully equipped kitchen for preparing meals and gathering. A composting toilet facility designed for sustainability and cleanliness. A traditional wood-fired maqi (steam bath) — the perfect place to relax after a long day of adventure. Freshwater access for cooking and cleaning, with simple systems in place to keep camp operations eco-friendly. Our hosts provide an orientation upon arrival, explaining how to use the facilities and maintain our clean, sustainable environment. 🏕️ Access to Activities Activities are designed to be easy to reach right from camp or arranged through our team: Fishing: Step directly from camp to the lake and river access points for world-class salmon and trout fishing. Hiking & Wildlife Viewing: Trails and natural walking routes begin right outside camp — perfect for exploring the tundra, spotting wildlife, or photographing Alaska’s endless landscapes. Cultural Experiences: Guests can join guided visits to Kokhanok Village, just five miles north, where you can join subsistence fishing workshops, tours or learn about local plant harvesting all from local residents. Raft rentals & kayaks: Raft rentals may be available for floating down the world re-noun Gibraltar River. Kayaks are also available if guests would like to explore Gibraltar Lake. Travel to camp is by floatplane or UTV/ATV, coordinated in advance. Once here, everything — from the steam bath to the fishing spots — is within easy walking distance.
