The property is located 12kms from the township of Wilmington, a sleepy country town boasting panoramic views (both Hancock's Lookout and Horrocks Pass) and some impressive walking trails through the Flinders Ranges in the area. In Wilmington, you will find a pub, a general store, coffeeshop and a variety of museums and a dumping spot.
We, your hosts, Anjo and Rob, live pretty much self-sufficient here - with solar power, water, vegetables, fruit, eggs, chicken meat, sheep meat, yabbies and marron. Everything is recycled, and nothing goes to waste - what we and the chickens and the sheep don’t eat will go to the compost/worm farm. The compost is reused in the veggie garden, excess eggs are boiled and fed to the yabbies and chooks, excess veggies will go to chooks, ducks and sheep. We grow carrots to feed to the yabbies. It’s a great lifestyle and we love it!
Our farm is a great homebase to explore the Flinders.
Explore the views and walks around Mount Remarkable, Mount Maria and Mount Brown, as well as the amazing sunrises and sunsets and starry night sky. There is an abundance of nearby hiking and biking opportunities including Alligator Gorge.
Seasonal farm produce available on request.
Options available for longer stays. If you would like to have a hands-on experience on a sustainable farm you could stay for free for 2 weeks (we can be flexible) in return for some caretaking while we visit our grandkids on Kangaroo Island. Jobs would be feeding animals, collect eggs and water vegetables.

Shingleback Shack

The Shingleback Shack is situated on a 1/4 acre costal block in Port Germein. It is only a 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk to the town centre, main beach and jetty. Otherwise you can explore the stunning Southern Flinders Ranges just a 15 minute drive from the block.
You can either choose to bring your own bedding and stay in the shack or bring a caravan or tent and set up camp around it. The shack fits 1 - 2 people, and is an empty 1.2m x 2.4m room. The block is off gird, but there is access to water from a sink connected to a water tank.
There is also access to toilets and showers both in the Port Germein town centre or at the local truck stop the Perry's Tinman just up the road. In town you can also access a RV dump point, and water tap if additional water is required. There are also bins located at the corner of Taylor's Road and Port Germein Road or in the town centre. Please take all your waste with you.
I want to acknowledge that Port Germain sits on the land of the Nukunu People, who have native title claims in the area and the Flinders Ranges sits on the land of the Adnyamathanha people. I respect all elders past and present and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.

Overview
About
About 50 kilometres southeast of Port Augusta and 270 kilometres north of Adelaide, Mount Remarkable National Park contains some spectacular canyons and is a popular wildlife-spotting and hiking destination, with short and long trails. There are several campsites as well as cabins for travellers who want a bit more comfort. The park is a must-visit stop on road trips through South Australia, or because it’s about three hours’ drive north of Adelaide, it can also be visited on a weekend trip from the city.

- Best for quiet nights: Baroota Campground has just 10 sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite
- Check the availability on the dates you want to visit–certain campgrounds and accommodation are sometimes closed for repairs or for seasonal or weather-related reasons.
- Book campgrounds and cabins online via the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia website. You can choose your dates and number of people in your party, and adjust according to availability.
- Campgrounds and cabins are most popular in the spring and autumn, so book as far in advance if possible if you want to visit in these seasons, or if your group is large.
When to go
April to October is the best time to visit Mount Remarkable National Park for camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Temperatures are most comfortable then. Summers can be extremely hot and dry, and the risk from bushfires is very high. The park is closed when the fire risk reaches “catastrophic” levels. Most campers won’t find sleeping in a tent or hiking to be comfortable in the summer.
Know before you go
- Bring plenty of water when camping and hiking in the park. There are some water points within the park but the availability of water depends on seasonal rainfall and shouldn’t be relied upon.
- Wheelchair-accessible toilets can be found at the Mambray Creek Campground and at Willowie. Other locations in the park have basic toilets.
- Campers should bring their own firewood, as gathering it isn’t allowed in the park. Fires aren’t allowed during bushfire danger season.
- The park is home to a lot of wildlife, and much of it isn’t shy. Look out for goannas, emus, kookaburras, echidnas, parrots, and eagles.
