Leavenworth offers a taste of Bavaria without the need to fly all the way to Germany, with Bavarian-style architecture—complete with hand-painted signs—and all sorts of German restaurants and souvenir shops. While Leavenworth's German ambiance does not have its origins in an immigrant community (it was conceived in the 1960s as part of a marketing campaign to get more visitors to the area), it’s still a fun place to visit and many campers come to soak in the atmosphere, using it as a home base for hiking, mountain biking, or cross-country skiing in the surrounding forests. To keep with the whimsical theme found elsewhere in town, consider booking a Leavenworth treehouse stay—many in the area offer glamping amenities like heating, free wifi, and wood stoves, not to mention fantastic views out over the forests and mountains.
Leavenworth is at its most charming in the weeks leading up to Christmas, with a holiday market and light displays to mark the season. The yuletide cheer continues well into the new year, but with fewer crowds. If you want to go camping (or are planning on driving over the Cascade Mountains and don’t want to risk getting stuck in a winter blizzard), late spring to early fall make an ideal alternative, with pleasant (but never hot) temperatures.
