Billy the Kid, born Henry McCarty and also known as William H. Bonney, was a frequent visitor to Fort Sumner, where he met his untimely end at the hands of Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett in 1881. The museum houses an impressive array of one-of-a-kind items, including a rifle that belonged to the Kid, complete with documentation, and the very door he backed through on the night of his death. Visitors can also view two curtains from Pete Maxwell's bedroom, where the fatal encounter occurred, as well as a large rock on which Billy carved his name. Additionally, the museum displays the chaps and spurs he wore to dances, highlighting his talents as a dancer and singer, which made him popular among the local young women.
