Built in 1860 by its first caretaker botanist, this homestead was propagated over its many years of life and is busting at the seams with medicinal and edible herbs. We now run a flower farm and vegetable gardens on our homestead. If you’d like to learn about herbs or gardening/ homesteading, we love sharing our knowledge.
If you’d just like some farm fresh eggs and enjoy your time alone amongst the songbirds, that's just fine too :)
The property is built into the stone hillside allowing for breathtaking views but also stairs to get to the campsites. Please wear comfortable shoes (not flip flops 😉). If you have mobility issues property access will be difficult. Please no children under 5.

This was our second time staying at Whispering Pines Campground, and we just had to come back for their Fall Fest! My little boys (ages 4 and 2) had an absolute blast — from the mini pumpkin patch and petting zoo to the pony petting, playground, and carnival games. There was so much to do, and the amazing food trucks meant we never had to leave the campground for meals! The staff were so friendly and helpful, and both the cabin and bathhouse were spotless and well-maintained. We can’t wait to come back again next year! Spring break can't come soon enough!

We are typically super primitive camping types but my daughter said “hey mom can we have 4 walls, AC, and electricity but still have adventure?”. Well of course I said and this was the perfect mix. AC, microwave and mini fridge with actual beds was a great treat! We cooked on the grill and had a fire in the fire pit every night. Close to the Hennepin Canal for a hike or Geneseo for a cute town. Loved the close bathrooms and shower yet felt like you were away.
Suggestions: bring a wagon if you have a lot to bring to your site or cabin as you cannot pull up to your spot. Bring your own bedding. Do not bring firewood as it can endanger the local trees but firewood there is very very well priced!

Weekend Trip to Geneseo Campground
We stayed for one night while traveling from Colorado to Michigan. The cozy cabin and location provided us with a quiet restful sleep. The campground was a perfect location with several nearby restaurants and the canal trail system right there for a nice walk.

Amazing little place to stay- private little sitting area with firepit, small frog pond, and room for tent camping right up the hill for bigger get togethers. Lovely big windows looking out on the sitting area, and nice outdoor shower. We are recommending to friends already!

We loved staying in The Bunkie! We visited with our dog and we all enjoyed our stay. The property is gorgeous and the room is cozy and clean. We enjoyed the outdoor seating areas also. We even took quick showers in the outdoor shower and found it to do the trick! We LOVED the tea from the owner and had everything we needed for our stay. It was hot outside while there but the room stayed comfortable the whole time. It also rained and we loved listening to the rain. It was a lovely stay!

Loved everything, but couldn't drive to the cabin, had to carry everything from the parking lot. Although the girl at check in offered to take everything over in the golf cart. Very friendly and very peaceful place.

Weekend Trip to 1860's Botanical Homestead
Spent my birthday weekend here with my chosen family (husband, best friends, and thier kids) and we had the tent site and the bunkie.
The site was perfect. It was a little uneven as explained in the description but for it having to be cut into the hill we were impressed with how flat it was. Even with it raining alot it didnt get alot of pooling water. The tree cover was great so even when it got heavy we were still able to walk to the cars or the bathroom without getting soaked.
The bunkie was clean and very comfortable and had a ton of things that people might forget like garbage bags and flashlights
There are alot of stairs and they are handmade so you have to be careful but I appreciated that thier were handrails pretty much everywhere.
The property is beautiful. I loved seeing all of the plants. Im a forager so I loved juat walking through and identifying the different plants. They had rented goats to clear alot of the brush on the hill and we got to watch them the first night while they were working which was awesome to see.
Jessica is an amazing host and was super sweet with the kids. She let them help her feed them and check for eggs and showed them all the art and work she does.
Also, I've never used a porta potty that smelled that good before and showering in the outdoor shower surrounded by nature was honestly magical. 100/10 will come again.

We just got back from the most amazing stay at Whispering Pines in Geneseo, IL, and we can’t say enough good things about it! My wife and I brought our two boys (ages 4 and 1), and it was truly the perfect family getaway.
The modern cabin was spotless, beautifully updated, and had everything we needed to feel right at home. Our boys absolutely loved waking up each morning and heading straight to the playground and sandbox—it kept them entertained for hours. One of the highlights was the mini trail with a scavenger hunt, which was such a fun touch for the kids.
What really stood out was how kind and thoughtful the staff were. One of the employees went above and beyond by bringing a kiddie pool from her own home so our boys could splash around and cool off on the hot days. It made their trip extra special!
The bath house was extremely clean, and we felt completely safe throughout our stay. We are already planning our next visit next month because we loved it so much. Highly recommend Whispering Pines to anyone looking for a relaxing, family-friendly camping experience!

2 nights at Geneseo Campground
Very friendly staff, the host at the front desk and the staff were always friendly and very helpful with any questions we had. We were checked in promptly with our key. There is a small ramp to get onto the porch of the cabin which is good for transporting things like coolers or suitcases that have wheels, into the cabin. The warm lights and the turtle decor on the cabin were a welcome addition to the look of the cabin. The queen-size bed was comfortable for two people. Bathrooms were very clean, even when some unfortunately messy campers left the bathroom in a less than ideal condition, the staff cleaned the bathrooms in a swift manner and it was just as fresh and clean as when we first arrived. The bathrooms had the windows open, but the A/C always kept the bathrooms cool and comfortable. The showers in the bathroom were equipped with a shower chair, shower caddy, shower curtain, and multiple hooks for bags and such. There were fat tire bikes and pedal carts for rental and those were nice to ride on the trail. The fishing along the Hennepin Canal was good, although I didn’t catch anything, I did enjoy the atmosphere and the nature around the canal. The hiking/biking trail was nice, one side led to a canal lock which was cool. The fire pit was the perfect size for cooking burgers, hot dogs, and s’mores. Overall, the cabin itself, inside and out, was cozy, cute, and functional and the campground was calm and quiet while we were there. Great stay!

Wildcat Den State Park is one of the closest state parks to Davenport, just a 25-minute drive southwest. Here, campers can hit hiking trails through rocky bluffs and see a historic grist mill. The Loud Thunder Forest Preserve is just across the river, too.
Buffalo Shores Park
On the banks of the Mississippi River, Buffalo Shores has 65 campsites for tent camping and RVs. Electric hookups and water are available, but RVers will find a convenient dump station as well. Tent campers love the hot showers and beachfront campsites on the river. Take advantage of the boat ramp for motor-powered watercraft or hand launch a canoe or kayak right from the beach.
Scott County Park
Situated 20 minutes north of Davenport, the 1,280-acre Scott County Park is a popular outdoor destination with camping facilities, an equestrian area, hiking trails, and a number of picnic table areas with grills and fire pits. Maquoketa Caves State Park features 13 stunning limestone caves and hiking trails linking them, plus a small seasonal campground for overnight stays. The Maquoketa River Water Trail nearby offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and camping along the river.
Lake Macbride State Park
Although the Mississippi River runs east of town, Lake Macbride State Park is another popular water hot spot to the west. Here campers can hit the lake for boating, hiking, and fishing—look out for catfish, muskies, and spotted bass.
Mississippi Palisades State Park
Another Mississippi River spot, this state park is reachable from Davenport via about a 75-minute drive north. Come for water fun, Native American history, massive rock formations, and nearly 250 campsites available for reservation.
When to go
Around Davenport, summer is all about camping on the river and nearby lakes. This trend continues into the fall as well, but spring is more difficult for visits due to melting snow and the potential for river flooding. Some parks and campgrounds close when the river rises.
