Welcome to White Sands Smokehouse! Experience the serenity of our 16 foot bell tent under a starlit sky. We offer a queen-sized bed with a comfortable mattress, crisp sanitized linens and pillows, and for the colder months, plenty of blankets to stay cozy. A word about our wildlife is important at this point. We are a registered wildlife sanctuary and take all steps necessary to protect it. This is the desert southwest. Diamondback rattlesnakes, black widow spiders, quail, rabbits, and the rare horned lizard all call our land their habitat. Stay alert! Issues with wildlife are very rare; any concerns will immediately be handled by host. Your Camp Host, Chef Üdø, is onsite most days and evenings, and has 30 years' experience in the catering and private chef biz, and as a camp host. He's happy to coordinate hot meals for you and your companions! No more need to go into town to get a pizza or some icky fast food! We will make you a homemade pizza, dry-aged steak, brined chicken, smoked Wagyu burger, or lasagna...all in-house. Vegan, vegetarian, kosher, low-sodium, and most other dietary restrictions are no problem! Contact Chef Üdø for more details and please check out our menu in the “Extras” section of our campsite listing. We can make just about anything in our sanitary kitchen facilities. This is a peaceful, well-maintained 40-acre private countryside property that is gated and fenced to exclude elk, deer, and large predators. A working pack of Australian Kelpie mix dogs roams the property and is friendly with people. For safety reasons, this is a no-pet property of any kind, as harm could occur due to the trained working pack that protects livestock and the land. Free-range chickens are also on the property, and the host offers true free-range eggs when available. There are six rentals on the property, and the host lives on-site, personally handling all cleaning and maintenance. Guests are expected to respect quiet hours and curfews, which apply to select rentals, helping maintain a calm and enjoyable environment for everyone. Outdoor areas are 420-friendly in compliance with New Mexico law. The property directly adjoins the Lincoln National Forest, with access provided for hiking and mountain biking only. No vehicles of any type are permitted beyond the boundary—pack it in, pack it out. Amenities include an 18-hole pasture golf course with clubs and balls provided, a basketball court, horseshoes, and walking trails. The property features extensive landscaping and thousands of trees, offering a big-mountain feel at approximately 6,000 feet elevation. Night skies are exceptionally dark, with minimal light interference. Hammocks are provided at all rentals except the Countryside Getaway, with an additional hammock available near the cabana. Each rental includes a charcoal BBQ. A shared cabana offers a propane BBQ, propane flat grill, and a large charcoal grill for guest use. An outdoor shared restroom is available for added convenience and privacy. The property is located 9 miles east of Ruidoso Downs on US Highway 70, approximately 11 miles from the race track, and just under 12 miles from Walmart. The adjoining forest area is remote and quiet, ideal for long hikes with little to no human activity. The only occasional vehicle may be a rancher authorized to access the forest. Grazing in this area has been paused as of 2025. Guests are welcome to message the host with any questions. While new to Hipcamp, the host has nearly six years of experience in short-term rentals and maintains a five-star hosting record.

On a working ranch, this campsite is located up a secluded arroyo off of the Hondo Valley and Rio Ruidoso in San Patricio, NM. This ranch is nearly 1400 acres total that is available for exploring and wildlife watching. During wildlife watching, it is possible that you could see roadrunners, squirrels, coyotes, rabbits, hawks, deer, elk, lizards, foxes, and many different types of song birds. A road south of the campsite is available for hiking down.Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs are just over a 20 minute drive from this campsite. Historic Lincoln and Fort Stanton are a quick drive from this area as well. The Hurd Gallery can be visited by driving down the highway a couple miles. A fishing spot open to the public on the Rio Ruidoso is available for fishing just a few miles down the highway as well. It has been reported that this arroyo contained a cienega many years ago which was a marshy area fed by a spring, before groundwater wells ran it dry. Most cienegas are now extinct in the southwest. Sheep and Firewood were the main commodities produced off of this ranch before cattle became dominant. NM State Land is 640 of these acres which requires an annual permit for recreational use.
