Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2024.
Located within 45 minutes of the wine country and 2 miles from the coast, our property is 400 acres of rolling hills and redwood groves, with a creek running along its base. With miles of trails meandering through quiet woods and meadows, you will be able to revel in the tranquility of a private preserve, without sacrificing easy access to some of Sonoma County's most famous attractions. A hundred years ago, this land was used to graze sheep. Remnants of the old fence lines can still be seen in places, along with old cement troughs. Since then, the land has been left to its own devices, passing through many hands, most famously owned by two brothers in the 1980's who built a truly amazing tree house in the forest which has been featured in several magazine articles. It was revamped and updated in 2016 by a master craftsman, using fallen redwood logs found on the property and is now a unique structural work of art, available for overnight stays. We produce 100% grass fed, dry-aged beef on our certified organic pastures and have a store on site if you would like to purchase delicious steaks, ribs, ground beef for hamburgers or some roasts to take home. Our cattle graze on the native grasses, never grain, and drink only water produced from our own springs. We also raise Kiko meat goats and produce pastured, certified organic duck eggs on a commercial basis. Whether it's surfing at sandy beaches, award-winning clam chowder, a wine tour, horseback riding or a hot air balloon ride you're after, you won't have far to drive if you make our ranch your base camp. You may see a family of deer appear suddenly, or a few Scottish Highland cows which we allow to roam freely over the property. There are over twenty species of wild birds that grace this protected spot, so bring your binoculars! A portion of your fee goes towards protecting native flora and fauna as part of our private wildlife preservation program. A limited number of private, widely spaced camp spots are available for visitors. The Eagles' Nest Treehouse (mentioned above) is very isolated and you may or may not even be aware that there are other people within miles of you. For those who value nature, seclusion, quiet and the artistry of old growth redwood, this is the place for you.

Eagle's Nest Treehouse Farmstay
99% (402)
Treehouse · Sleeps 2 · 1 bedroom · 1 bed · 1 toilet
The Eagle's Nest Treehouse Farm Stay offers a secluded, tranquil wilderness experience, right in the middle of a private forest, but with many of the comforts of a well-appointed guest house 40 feet from the ground.  Located on a 400-acre working ranch on the Sonoma coast, we are less than 90 minutes from San Francisco and half that from California's premier wine-growing regions of the Napa-Sonoma Valleys. We are also smack dab in the middle of some of California's most breathtaking coast. In fact, you can hear the waves crashing from the treehouse deck when the wind blows in from the north. You are near enough to civilization, but it feels like you are in the most remote and peaceful spot on earth.  During the day, you can hike our miles of forest trails and never run into another person. You can check out the flora and fauna residing among the ferns, redwood trees and rolling pasture lands and then roast some of our ranch products, all grown right here, over the treehouse barbecue located at ground level. You can also explore the ranch operation, which includes Scottish Highland cattle, Kiko goats, ducks, geese and the livestock guardian dogs who protect them all. Learn about sustainable organic farming practices and if you like a really hands-on experience, you can help us herd the ducks in at night or come along in the UTV to help with evening chores.  At night, when the fog is out, you can see all the stars since the lights of civilization are so far away. If the fog is in, you can hear the fog horns bleating distantly from Bodega Bay. Think seclusion, privacy, peacefulness and nature.  This legendary treehouse, featured in House & Garden Magazine in 2000,  the Treehouse Guys TV program and  several other magazines since, has been totally refurbished and modernized using the latest structural and safety standards to serve as a guest house for our Farm Stays. It is reopening after a lengthy pause due to County permitting issues, during which further upgrades have been installed to meet residential building codes.  Securely nestled high above the forest floor between two towering Douglas Firs, the large redwood deck of the Eagle’s Nest is accessed via a spiral staircase and a 40 ft suspension bridge. Once inside the treehouse proper, the rich hue and grain of the polished and oiled old growth redwood floor, walls and ceiling is astounding. Residential standards of construction throughout include two sets of 8 ft high French doors, sliding windows, a queen size bed, electricity for lights and your personal accessories, separate bathroom with flush toilet, hot and cold water, sink, and an amazing copper-lined shower with floor to ceiling windows looking out on the forest below. A powerful space heater and the insulated walls, floor and ceiling keep the interior cozy. While staying here you have access to miles of hiking trails throughout our 400 acre working ranch, half a private forest preserve and half organically certified pasture for production of organic duck eggs, goat meat and grass-fed beef (from our amazing Scottish Highland & Angus cattle). You can also enjoy a mile and a half of Salmon Creek that runs through the property, and observe our efforts to help restore the native Coho Salmon. Information on our ranching operations (aimed at production of natural, healthy food) is provided to all guests. Accommodation in the treehouse is intended for two adults in one bed (children or pets are negotiable). Price includes the Sonoma County 12% transient occupancy tax.  An online search for YOUTUBE TREEHOUSE VIDEO BY THOMAS AGARATE will bring up an amazing short movie of the Eagle's Nest, including spectacular drone footage, taken by our first guest (a drone technology pioneer).

Creekside Camp #3
95% (285)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 6 · Vehicles under 25 ft
Our Creekside Camp offers secluded tranquility on the banks of Salmon Creek, home of collaborative efforts to restore native Coho Salmon.  During the warmer months, this private camp (REACHED VIA SALMON CREEK ROAD, NOT OUR MAIN RANCH ENTRANCE ON BAY HILL ROAD) offers access to the entire ranch and hiking trails by crossing the creek -- bring rubber boots as there is usually still a few inches of water in the crossing. After crossing the creek by foot and heading uphill through the redwood, fir and bay laurel forest to the open uplands, you will be able to view the hundreds of acres of natural pasture lands of the ranch (with our ducks, goats and Scottish Highland cattle). NOTE regarding summer bookings: During Red Fire Alerts or times when dry conditions make fires dangerous, we will ban campfires at our sites. Propane stoves are OK for cooking, but not as a heat source.  If your group is larger than 4, please utilize the additional person feature; each of the 3 sites can ccommodate a max of 6 campers including children. Early check in and late check out are sometimes possible—but check with us first. Well-behaved dogs are most welcome, despite what it might say during the booking procedure. This listing currently offers three sites, each with a picnic table, a fire pit (with grill) and a nearby port-a-potty, all easily accessible by car via Salmon Creek Rd (a very seldom traveled country road). Creekside #1 is right inside the gate and most accessible from the road. Creekside #2 sits amid a stand of redwoods. Creekside #3 sits on a knoll above the creek with a private path down to the pools and a tent deck and several forest "rooms".  Camper vans are suitable for all spots, and small teardrop trailers can be accommodated in Creekside #1 and #2.  Bring your own firewood and potable water, and be prepared to take away your trash. Four wheel drive tours of the ranch and forest are sometimes available at an additional cost by arrangement, enabling you to visit some of the more remote, scenic and steep areas of the property in comfort.  If you want a creek side camp that is a hundred times more quiet and secluded than any public or Forest Service campground, check us out!

The campsite offers a serene escape with beautiful surroundings and ample privacy, making it perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained sites, which feature fire rings and tables, though access to some areas may require 4WD due to the steep and bumpy roads. While most guests found the hosts accommodating and the amenities satisfactory, a few mentioned challenges in locating campsites and limited cell service. Overall, the blend of natural beauty and the opportunity to explore trails and interact with farm animals creates a unique camping experience.

Peaceful haven in the woods
We stayed at redwood campsite #3 and had an absolutely lovely time at Salmon Creek. The sites are spacious and spaced quite far apart. Having access to the creek and various hiking trails was lovely. Our dog enjoyed having freedom to run around without worrying about bothering other guests. We'd be delighted to return again! You definitely need a AWD / 4x4 car to get down to the redwood sites.

Beautiful area.
Site #2 was nice, right next to the road and a Honey Bucket. Couldn't find the trail to the animals. Difficult finding the campsites. Not much help from hosts. But still such a beautiful area, you can't go wrong. Sites clean and quiet.

Amazing!
Such a beautiful spot! The ranch is gorgeous, with lots of fun animals! John and Lesley were very kind and gave great recommendations for things to do nearby. The treehouse is secluded and has everything you need. We brought food to cook and used a camping stove, but there is a grill and a firepit with a grate. Bring firewood! It was stunning and so peaceful.

This is an amazing piece of property and the campsites feel right at home here - secluding and away from just about everything. Table, fire ring and plenty of space and privacy, this is a really great spot to get away for a night or two.
