Simple, eco-friendly camping with epic views at the foot of a famed Welsh mountain range

Cwmffrwd Farm's, Pengenffordd off-grid, pop-up site is a back-to-nature retreat for those looking for simple camping in stunning surroundings. Nestled within 22 acres of wildflower meadows, the spacious pitches for campers and glampers alike make visitors feel like they've found a secret spot in South Wales - tucked away amid towering mountains in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Exemplified by the site's focus on maintaining the natural biodiversity of their surroundings, hosts James and Pridie are advocates of outdoor life and positive environmental change, with James working in the energy and environment sector and Pridie being both a survival instructor and professional outdoor performance storyteller.

The secluded nature of Cwmffrwd Farm ensures guests' privacy compared to other, more densely populated sites, along with keeping this beautiful land unspoiled. This is reflected in the simple amenities, with composting loos in the meadows and a washroom and flushing toilet located in the 'The Byre', with hot water and an electric shower. Please note that no vehicles are allowed on the meadows to protect the ground and the people running wild and free! Cars park in the meadow entrance and campervan pitches are all located along the bottom of both camping meadows. Wheelbarrows are provided for moving kit.

The amenities may be basic here, but they're situated in a site owned by people who know a great outdoor spot with a view when they see one. Camping pitches are spaciously spread out across the meadows and the highest one has a gate that opens out onto the Waun Fach mountain range (with the highest peak of south-eastern Wales' Black Mountains at 811m.) Select your pitch, plant your tent / park your campervan, and explore your surroundings with minimal fuss. For glamping, choose between the two five-metre bell tents, the four-metre bell tent or the extra special 4m bell with linen and stove. The bell tents have the meadow all to themselves with a lovely babbling brook running down the mountain beside it.

Your mountainous surroundings provide ample opportunities for lengthy rambles and hikes, while guests should ditch their phones (there's no WiFi here, allowing a firm disconnect from modern life) and replace them with books from the site's little outdoor library, which also contains charts to help you identify the resident wildlife. You and the kids can also enjoy a variety of workshops run throughout the year that feature folklore, folktales, bushcraft and wilderness skills - see extras and website for dates. Suffice to say, you won't forget Cwmffrwd Farm in a hurry.

Cwmffrwd Farm invites campers to a serene escape, where the hosts' warmth and the breathtaking scenery steal the show. Campers revel in the sprawling wildflower meadows, and spacious pitches that provide ample privacy. Though the views are captivating, especially from the upper tent sites, van campers might find leveling blocks necessary due to the sloped grounds. The camp's facilities are basic but clean, aligning with the back-to-nature experience that many find refreshing.

Free spirits (or those who need to free their spirits a little…), this is the place for you! Cwmffrwd Farm's award winning eco-friendly wild camping and accommodation is a back-to-nature retreat for those looking to reconnect with nature in stunning surroundings. Nestled within twenty two acres of wildflower meadows, the farm makes you feel like you've found a secret spot tucked away amid towering mountains in the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog Brecon Beacons National Park. Exemplified by the site's focus on maintaining the natural biodiversity of their surroundings, hosts James and Pridie are advocates of outdoor life and positive environmental change. The secluded nature of Cwmffrwd Farm sets it aside from more densely populated sites, keeping this beautiful land unspoiled and ensuring it remains a haven for both wildlife and visitors alike. We have eight upper meadow tent pitches (7m x 5m) with stunning views, and six lower meadow van pitches along the bottom (small VW/transit vans/roof tents/tent campers that wish to drive to their pitch). We now also have a beautiful wood-fired sauna available to book during your stay :) To keep everyone (and the flowers) safe, vehicles are not allowed on the wildflower meadows, except those driving to the van pitches. Two grass carparks are provided, and kit and equipment can be transported using the wheelbarrows provided. Amenities are also kept very SIMPLE to minimise impact on the land, with three compost toilets, one washing up area, one flushing toilet and one shower. This is close to a 'wild camping' experience but made a bit easier with toilets, kettle, fridge, freezer etc! Guests are asked to come prepared with bags to take rubbish home to recycle. There is limited data signal at the farm, so come prepared to disconnect from modern life. Instead, enjoy frolicking in the meadows, paddle in the stream or enjoy a session in our wood-fired sauna! Along with the seclusion of each individual pitch, the farm feels like it is tucked away too. It’s 12 minutes drive to picturesque Crickhowell, and 25 minutes to celebrated book town Hay-on-Wye and bustling market town Brecon. It’s best to stock up on food before you arrive, or shop at local supermarkets in Brecon, Abergavenny or the high street in Crickhowell.
Nearby attractions

In the surrounding area, the site resides in the heart of Brecon Beacons National Park, offering scenic walks through the stunning countryside. Enjoy the Brecon Promenade, a grade 2 walk along the river Usk, or look across the lakes and ponds as part of the Craig-y-nos route. Also tucked away in this National Park is the Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (01874 658272), an award-winning indoor and outdoor centre with horse riding, an indoor climbing centre, and pony trekking trips.
