Succumb to the tranquil hills of Graig Wen. Smart, sustainable and quite simply, lush.

Situated in the south-west corner of the Snowdonia National Park, there’s no doubt that Graig Wen enjoys one of the best campsite locations in the whole of Wales. Set among some 45 acres of its own wild woods and meadows, and with amazing views over the Mawddach Estuary curling down to Cardigan Bay below, this established spot plays host to happy campers and ample wildlife alike. It’s not surprising, then, that it has won the Green Snowdonia Award for ‘Most Sustainable Campsite’, along with a clutch of other gongs, including ‘The Best Camping and Glamping Site’ according to Go North Wales. Yet for all the awards, Graig Wen remains a wonderfully peaceful and unpretentious spot to stay.

At the heart of the campsite’s success is its owners’ paired passion to constantly improve the site while preserving its wild nature. To accompany their small collection of touring pitches, Sarah and John have hand-built two yurts from ash trees found on the land, kitting them out with quirky furniture and textiles, while two more pop-up yurts have been designed to move around the site depending on the season (closer to loos, showers and the comforts of electricity in winter). As recently as 2019 they added a cute new shepherd’s hut and there’s also a small holiday cottage.  Their newest additions are two quarry wagons. Cosy whatever the weather, the wagons are in a little less secluded than our yurts and shepherd’s hut, giving you easy access to a few more mod cons and parking close by.

For tent campers, however, the real highlight here is found down a short but steep track. Below the year-round touring site, several fields run right up to the edge of the estuary, available to pitch in from May to September. There’s a spacious family field, nearest to the parking, as well as more secluded spots with enticing names like Ash Corner, Mawddach View and Wild Cherry. Campfires are allowed and there’s ample space to go around, with enough choice for every camper to find the right amount of views, shelter, space or isolation, to suit their taste. In keeping with its award-winning status, Graig Wen’s well-maintained facilities are always spick and span, with hot showers and sparkling toilets. Viewing benches overlooking the Mawddach Estuary offer the best seat in the house come sunset o’clock – especially given Snowdonia’s ‘International Dark Sky Reserve’ status – and a simple camp shop stocks local ales and other essentials.

If you want to explore the campsite’s various streams and stretches of woodland, there’s an engaging geocache trail, which also subtly teaches you about the area’s slate-mining heritage along the way. More intrepid explorers, meanwhile, can tackle Cader Idris – the spectacular mountain at the back of Graig Wen. It’s the highest peak in southern Snowdonia but the crowds tend to be much smaller than on the summit of famous Snowdon in the north. According to legend, if you spend the night on the summit, you’ll come down a poet. Or a madman.

From a gate at the bottom of the campsite you can also cycle all the way to the beaches at Fairbourne or Barmouth without ever seeing a road, and virtually the entire route to Dolgellau in the other direction is road-free, too. It’s a fitting way to get around from the campsite; a place where cars belong safely in the car park and nature, in all its glory, takes centre stage.

Estuary Field Grass Tent Pitch

100%
(33)
Tent pitch · Sleeps 2
The 6 Estuary Field tent pitches have some of the best  views of the Mawddach Estuary and closest access to the Mawddach Trail.  Strictly one tent per pitch. There is no vehicle access to the Estuary field and you must book a car parking space as an extra if you are bringing a car.  These Estuary field pitches are best suited to adults or families with older children who will respect and enjoy the tranquil, chilled out atmosphere and quiet chat around the camp fire.  The pitches are slightly closer together than others on our tent camping fields and there is no space for additional gazebos on the estuary field. You will still have plenty of space to relax and enjoy this very special place. If your tent is particularly large, you may be better booking a pitch in one of our different fields - please check with us before booking. Nearly Wild Camping The tent camping fields suit those looking for a back to nature camping experience who don't mind a bit of an up and down walk to the car-park, our clean compost loos and shower trailer, or a steeper walk to the conventional loos and showers on the caravan/camper van part of the site. You can have a camp fire and there is a fire pit next to each pitch but there are no electric hook ups on the tent fields. Phone charging and a freezer for ice blocks are available. The lower meadows and wild woods are crossed by streams and dry stone walls and campers are surrounded by unspoilt scenery and wildlife. Your neighbours will be owls and woodpeckers! A great camping experience for grown-ups with a spirit of adventure and families with older children. You get plenty of space for exploring as there are just 17 tent pitches in total across the lower fields spread over 40 acres. There is direct access to the Mawddach Trail bike and footpath from the fields. - responsibly managed campfires allowed  - logs for sale on site - 2 compost toilets on tent fields with more conventional WCS  a walk up the steep track on upper camper van site - 3 hot showers dotted around tent fields with more a walk up the steep track on upper camper van site - Filtered drinking water taps - pre-order breakfast croissant on site for collection. Takeaway barista coffee In addition to the 6 Estuary Field tent pitches, you can choose from: 3 "Park & Pitch" pitches you can drive to and park next to 5 Orchard Field pitches which are well spaced out, flat and ideal for larger tents. The orchard field is spacious and feels open with views of our hidden valley and Welsh apple trees. Great for families with larger tents and those with younger children - although outside peak times you might well have this area to yourself.  3 Super-Secluded pitches which are the longest walk from the car park, but the most private. Spacious and ideal for larger tents. There's a compost loo and hot shower nearby. The secluded pitches also have space for a gazebo or awning. Vehicle access No car access to your pitch unless you have booked one of our 3 "Park & Pitch" pitches. Most of the lower tent camping fields are car free and our car park has very limited parking.  If you are coming by car there is a one off vehicle charge to park one car (no vans remember!) in the camper's car park at the bottom of the steep track.  The longer you stay, the cheaper it is. If you arrive between 2 and 4pm we are usually around to offer you a complimentary lift with your kit from the car park to your pitch on our all terrain vehicle. We also do our best to be available to help you with a lift back to your car the morning you check out.  We also provide plenty of wheelbarrows to help you move your kit to your pitch - but be warned it can be a long uphill walk if you have loads of kit! Access to camper's car park is via a steep track Access is not suitable for vans of any kind which are not permitted (even if you are not using a camper van to sleep in) - camper vans are welcome on our upper touring site. Allocated pitches We allocate pitches during busy periods but at quiet times you are welcome to choose your own pitch when you get here.  We are strictly limited by planning regulations regarding which places tents can pitch so if you are coming with friends in another tent please let us know so we can try and pitch you near each other. Super Secluded tent pitches

100%
(20)
Tent pitch · Sleeps 5
Our 3 Super-Secluded pitches  are the longest walk from the car park, but the most private.   All our pitches have plenty of space between tents but these pitches are hidden away and you will see far less of your fellow campers. It's almost like wild camping but you have access to a compost loo and hot shower within 100 metres. The car park is across a few fields about 400 metres away. For this reason we don't recommend these pitches for those with very young children who are not up for a bit of a walk!    You must book a space in the car park as an extra if you are bringing a car.  We only accept one tent per pitch. The super-secluded pitches can accommodate large tents and also have space for a gazebo or awning. Please be aware you cannot drive to these pitches - see access information below. (6)
Yurt · Sleeps 4
Tommy is spacious with a proper double bed, 2 pull out single beds and woodburning stove of course. The modern style yurt is colourfully decorated and is named after Tommy Nutter, the Barmouth born tailor who dressed The Beatles and David Bowie and created Jack Nicholson’s costume for The Joker in Batman. Tommy is sited in a sunny corner of a silver birch glass which is secluded from the rest of the camp site.  Nearby is our shepherd's hut and you will see glampers in 2 other yurts through the trees.   Tommy has an outdoor kitchen shelter fully kitted out with a 2 ring gas hob, kettle and all the utensils you will need for making meals.  As well as plates, dishes, cutlery, beakers and pans there is a cool box. You have access to a shared fridge and freezer with ice packs a couple of hundred metres away. There is a picnic bench under the shelter for dining al fresco. The yurt is on a beautiful wooden base made by a local craftsman and there is bespoke furniture, floor rugs, warm Welsh tapestry blankets and sheep skins on the beds. Tommy has a private compost loo nearby. Conventional loos and hot showers are a short walk away and are shared with the rest of our small touring camp site. Tommy is off grid and you will be drinking fresh Welsh spring water which is filtered from our borehole.  There is solar lighting and we give you a lantern to help you find your way around under starry skies as we are in the core of Eryri/Snowdonia National Park Dark Skies reserve.  We are happy to charge up battery packs (but not phones) in reception.  There is good 4G access by the yurt and also a wifi point in a shelter on the camp site, As well as the woodburning stove inside the yurt, you have a firebowl outside for star-gazing around. Access is easy as you can park one car right by the yurt. Just bring your own double bedding or sleeping bags, pillows, towels and food and enjoy a very special corner of Snowdonia National Park. The small en suite shower room is heated and also has a wash basin and flushing loo. The wagon is fully insulated with an infrared heater for instant warmth at the flick of a switch.  There’s electric lighting and a USB charge point. The wagon’s sleek interior is made from sustainable birch plywood, giving it a light and airy modern feel. Outdoor Space There's a private seating area with fairy lights. We are in the Snowdonia Dark Skies Reserve so it’s perfect for star-gazing around the fire bowl – and of course toasting marshmallows! Children can find freedom to explore (under supervision) in our adjacent 40 odd acres of wild woods and fields. Location The two new quarry wagons, Empress and Small Duchess, are less secluded than our yurts and shepherd’s hut, located on the small touring area of our camp site. You’ll have a few neighbours in up to half a dozen camper vans/caravans (less in winter) but our site is very quiet, laid back and friendly. Empress Wagon is tucked away in the corner, sheltered by trees. So although views are limited, you only have a few steps to walk to the shared seating area by our breathtaking viewpoint. If you’re happy being a little less secluded with more in the way of home comforts, you’ll enjoy a stay in Empress whatever the weather. If you’d rather be away from everyone and off grid, then you might like to consider Idris yurt or sharing the hidden glade with a few other glampers. What are quarry wagons? Similar to shepherd’s huts, we were inspired to call our new designs “quarry wagons” to reflect the typical Snowdonia industrial heritage of our location. You can see more pictures and information on our web site.AccessThere are a couple of steps up to Empress. There is a step up into the double bed. Those with bad back problems may not want to push the fold down bed back up, but it has a spring on it so most people find it fine. Those bringing very young children may want to bring side bars for the lower bunk which is about 1 foot off the ground. The upper bunk has side bars but we recommend this is only for use by children aged 6 years and over. Dog friendlyTo give everyone enough space, we recommend this space is suitable for one dog or a couple with 2 small dogs.  Our large yurt, Idris and Tommy yurts have more room for larger dogs.

Jones the Shepherd's Hut

100%
(3)
Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 4
Sleeps up to 4 people - maximum 3 adults. Relax in this unique Shepherd’s Hut in a wildly beautiful corner of Snowdonia National Park.  Jones the Shepherd’s Hut has a Visit Wales Gold Award for quality. Relax in a tranquil and sheltered silver birch glade. The beautiful Mawddach Estuary is a short (but steepish) walk through Graig Wen’s woods and fields.  You can cycle or walk to the beach or pub a few miles away or head for the mountains with Cader Idris on the doorstep. A talented team of skilled local crafts people have built this cleverly designed hut.  The interior fittings have been crafted from an interesting mix of Welsh hardwoods and timber reclaimed from a local chapel. There’s a double bed with proper mattress, plus a day bed for chilling out which converts to bunk beds for two children if required. With well-insulated walls and a wood burning stove, you’ll be warm and snug whatever the weather. There is also a dining table with seating for four people and a kitchenette with sink and cold water tap, gas hob, fridge and all the cutlery and plates you need to whip up simple meals. Bedding is provided for the double bed, including a sheep wool “Baavet” duvet made on a Snowdonia farm. And of course, there are warm Welsh blankets and sheepskins to snuggle under on cooler nights. You can park right next to Jones the Hut. There's a picnic table, chairs and a fire pit perfect for BBQs outside. A private shower and compost loo are practically en suite just a few metres away from the Shepherd's Hut.  There are further flushing loos, wash basins and hot showers shared with the rest of the small camp site just a few metres away. You can book a minimum of 2 nights in the Shepherd's Hut outside of peak times. During school and bank holidays you can book 3 nights minimum from Friday or 4 nights from Monday only. Week long bookings are also available for Friday or Monday check-ins. Please check out the web page on Graig Wen's own web site for more photos and details.

Cosy and stylish pod type accommodation in Snowdonia National Park – great for walkers, mountain bikers, couples and small families. Features • Sleeps up to 3  • Private Kitchen • Electric light and heating •Shared washing facilities close by including hot showers  • USB charger • Parking nearby • Fire pit  • One Dog welcome Enjoy our fantastic location from the comfort of Small Duchess, cosy whatever the weather! Available March - January. Small Duchess is one of the new quarry wagons we are building, brand new for 2021.   The stylish and unusual self catering accommodation can sleep up to 3 people, making it ideal whether you’re a couple, small family, on your own, or with mates. The wagons are clad with rosy Douglas Fir timber produced locally and ecologically in the Esgair Forest. The sleek interior is made from sustainable birch plywood, giving it a light and airy modern feel. What’s Inside? There is a proper standard size double bed and 6ft 1″single bed/bench seat. You can knock up simple meals in the kitchenette and eat around the dining table. The wagon is fully insulated with an infrared heater for instant warmth at the flick of a switch.  There’s electric lighting and a USB charge point. Because sometimes you need to stay connected,  we offer free wifi near reception and 4G on site. The kitchenette inside features a 2 ring gas hob, sink with cold water tap, plenty of storage and a cool box. You can also use a shared fridge freezer close at hand. Cooking implements and crockery are provided so all you need to bring is bedding/sleeping bags and towels. Order croissants for breakfast then sit back and relax around your fire-pit with a chilled craft beer from our shop! Loo and shower Hot showers, washbasins and flushing loos are shared with other campers and close by (with nice clean loos practically en suite).  If you prefer to have private en suite facilities, you might prefer Empress Wagon. Outdoor space You have a private seating area right outside the wagon with a fire bowl and picnic table. Here in Snowdonia Dark Skies Reserve  it’s perfect for awesome star-gazing. Children can find freedom to explore (under supervision) in our adjacent 40 odd acres of wild woods and fields. Small Duchess is sited so you can see views of the mountains over a couple of camping pitches.  During November and December these pitches are not in use so in winter you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the stunning Mawddach Estuary and mountains. The two new quarry wagons, Small Duchess and Empress, are less secluded than our yurts and shepherd’s hut, located on the small touring area of our camp site. You’ll have a few neighbours in up to half a dozen camper vans/caravans (less in winter) but our site is very quiet, laid back and friendly. If you’re happy being a little less secluded with more in the way of home comforts, you’ll enjoy a stay in Small Duchess whatever the weather. However If you’d rather be away from everyone, then you might like to consider Idris yurt or sharing the hidden glade with a few other glampers. What are quarry wagons?  Similar to shepherd’s huts or cabins on wheels, we were inspired to call our new accommodation “quarry wagons” to reflect the typical Snowdonia industrial heritage of our location. See our web site for more details and pictures! Access There are a couple of steps up to Duchess. There is a step up into the double bed. Idris Pop-Up Yurt

Booked 13 times
Yurt · Sleeps 4
Idris is one of our two pop-up glamping yurts in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales. Wild glamping From May Idris pops-up in a wild corner of our lower tent camping fields until late September. In the wild location you camp in a secret, private area with your own camp fire, huge old oak trees and views up the valley. You will truly experience deep peace and tranquility here with birdsong your only soundtrack. There is a private clean and airy compost loo and outdoor"jungle" shower a few steps away. You can also use the hot shower about a hundred meters away shared with other campers. Please be aware that this pitch is secluded and involves a bit of walking across sloping meadows to your car etc. For this reason we recommend wild glamping in Idris is suitable for adults and older children seeking an active, wild adventure. Dogs on leads are welcome too. If you prefer a little more luxury closer to parking and the washing facilities then Glamping in the Glade might suit you better. Guests booking wild glamping are given a lift from the car parking area with their kit to the pitch if they arrive between 3 and 5pm. Outside of these times wheelbarrows are provided to take your stuff across the meadows. PLEASE NOTE LAST CHECK IN FOR SUMMER GLAMPING IS 6.45PM due to the remote and wild location of Idris. We will not accept any arrivals for Idris after dusk – please plan accordingly or you will be asked to arrive the next morning. Please check out the web page on Graig Wen's own web site for more photos and details. You can book to check in on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays (off peak). What’s a Pop-up yurt? Unlike our more traditional hand-crafted yurts, the pop-up yurts are made of modern materials which are easy to move but still robust and fully waterproof. Idris is named after the giant said to be so large that his throne is the summit of one of Wales’ most iconic mountains – Cader Idris (meaning the throne of Idris), which overlooks Dolgellau. What’s in the yurt? Idris comes kitted out with a proper double bed with a quality extra thick mattress and two single sofa beds.  Stay cosy inside by the wood burning stove or star-gaze outside around a fire-pit. The yurt is on a beautiful wooden base made by local craftsman Dan and there is bespoke furniture, floor rugs, and warm Welsh tapestry blankets and sheep skins on the beds. A simple covered camp kitchen right outside the yurt provides a 2 ring camping gas stove and all the cooking equipment, plates, cutlery etc you will need.  We are happy to recharge battery packs (but not phones)  for you in reception, and there is also a wifi point for those who don’t want to switch off completely! Just bring your own double bedding or sleeping bags, towels and food and enjoy a very special corner of Snowdonia National Park… Travelling light The pop-up yurt is perfect if you fancy travelling light and trying a car-free holiday. It’s easy to get to Graig Wen and get around on public transport. Bike hire is available locally and the local train station is at Morfa Mawddach a couple of miles away. You can pre-order freshly baked croissants for breakfast.

Large yurt

Booked 9 times
Yurt · Sleeps 5
The larger of our two yurts in Wales’ Snowdonia National Park can sleep a family of up to 4 adults and 1 child and is a fantastic space for a couple. The yurt sits on a raised deck and is in an incredible location above the Mawddach Estuary for glamping holidays in North Wales. Furnished with rugs, sheepskins and warm Welsh blankets, you can stretch out in a proper king-sized bed.  There’s also two single pull out beds and a camp bed in the shared open space inside.  Spend time with your loved ones around the wood burning stove or star-gaze around the camp fire outside – we provide a basket of logs to get you going and there’s more for sale on site.  You can cook using the two ring camping gas stove and we provide a full range of cooking utensils so you don’t need to worry about packing much.  A picnic bench outside is the ideal spot to enjoy a breakfast of freshly baked croissants and listen to the birdsong. There is a private compost loo and private outdoor hot shower just for the large yurt a few steps away.  Further flushing loos and showers are just a couple of minutes walk down a track shared with campers on the touring camp site. Showers are hot and modern with plenty of mirror space and electric sockets for hairdrying! There’s space to park one car right next to the large yurt. The yurts are off grid, so there is simple solar lighting and we provide a lantern. There is also access to a fridge/freezer as well as the cool box in the yurt. We are happy to recharge battery packs etc (not phones) for you in reception, and there is also 4G reception and a wifi point for those who don’t want to switch off completely! Parents of young children should be aware there is a steep, wooded slope near one side of the yurt and be responsible for their children’s safety. Our holiday accommodation in Snowdonia National Park, near Barmouth and Dolgellau, North Wales is in an exceptional location. Overlooking the Mawddach Estuary, one of the most beautiful in Wales, the views are breathtaking. Step straight onto the scenic Mawddach cycle Trail from our camping field. The mountains are all around, with sandy beaches, castles, steam trains, zip lines and bike trails close by. Whether you prefer a cottage, cosy wagon or yurt or sleeping under the stars, Graig Wen offers you a range of quality accommodation. Our small, tranquil campsite has direct access to the beautiful Mawddach Estuary. There’s a sheltered area with electric hook ups for a handful of camper vans or roof tents close to our washing facilities, wagons, yurts and cottages. If you really want to get away from it all, go wild and pitch your tent down near the estuary to star gaze around a camp fire. Dogs on leads welcome. Pitches in our our car-free tent fields are well spaced out with loads of breathing space for everyone. For family glamping adventures and romantic retreats you can also hideaway in one of our four pet-friendly yurts, Jones the shepherd's hut or new quarry wagons. You’ll be blown away by the views, scenery and seclusion…but have a bit of comfort too! In recent years we are proud to have won the Go North Wales Camping and Glamping Site of the year and featured in The Guardian’s 10 Best Glamp sites, The Times' Coolest Places to Camp, The Independent’s 10 Best Luxury Coast Camp sites, as well as Country Living Magazine and many more.
Nearby attractions

Cadair Idris (892 metres) - clambering up the mountain is a great local option and the Pony Path makes is family friendly.  Alternatively walk straight off the camp site along the stunning (and flat) waterside Mawddach Trail to the seaside treats of Barmouth. Go crabbing or visit Knickerbockers ice-cream parlour. As well as the cycle track along the estuary to the Fairbounre beach, there’s mountain-bike routes for all abilities, at nearby Coed-y-Brenin (01341 440747), around 5 miles north of Dolgellau. Head north to Llechwedd Slate Caverns where Zip World (01248 601444) is hugely popular. Over 8km of wires are strung throughout the mountains providing a truly unique areal experience. Slightly more theme park-like, King Arthur’s Labyrinth, on the A487 between Dolgellau and Machynlleth (01654 761584) is an attraction themed around ancient myths and legends. Castell y Bere is an atmospheric ruined castle which is great for exploring. Graig Wen is in one of the darkest parts of the Snowdonia Dark Skies Reserve so the star gazing can be awesome. Walk from the site to Arthog waterfalls and up to the stunning Cregennan Lakes.

Food and drink

Good pub grub at The George III Hotel (01341 422525) 5 minutes drive or an hour' and half's delightful walk along the estuary cycle trail. Locally produced lamb, beef and fish can be enjoyed outside in view of the estuary. Down at Fairbourne, the unassuming Indiana Cuisine (01341250891) is a pleasant surprise. South Indian specialities are created with colour and flourish from fresh ingredients and traditional home recipes. Plenty of non-spicy and vegan options available.  Mawddach Neapolitan Pizzas are now serving up the best pizzas this side of Naples to enjoy over fabulous views of Cader Idris. Head to the Celtic Cabin on Barmouth Prom for the most amazing street food.
