As his day job, Gyles teaches sustainability, designs school grounds and leads expeditions around the world, so, as owners go, he’s more than well equipped to steer the verdant helm of Naturesbase with his green fingers. Another Ceredigion-based eco-campsite, the dreamy, clover- and buttercup-covered meadows at Naturesbase have just 12 pitches – each in their own little mown spots among the wild grasses and flowers. Two of the pitches are taken up by pre-erected safari tents, which afford campers the added luxury of laziness: just turn up and settle in for the night without so much as touching a tent peg. The site caters perfectly for children, with a rubber-stamp nature trail to follow, a willow den, animals to feed, a mini football pitch and streams to hop across. And then there are Gyles’ campfire nights; everyone sits around the huge fire pit near the communal hub for sing-songs and chats after having their fill of home-made pizza. The kids get to help make the pizza before watching it brown and sizzle in the clay oven. The atmosphere here is unbeatable: tranquil and restorative, but happy and friendly too. There is plenty of space for everyone to have their fare share of nature around here, as well as inviting communal areas in which to chill, sing, play and scoff your pizzas.

Secluded Grass Pitch

This is the best campsite we've ever stayed on in nearly 20 years of camping. The campsite achieves the perfect balance of space, privacy, a beautiful setting, an adventure for your children, wonderful hosts and an environment for parents/adults to relax in. Obviously having great weather helped but we wouldn't hesitate to book our holiday here again. The campsite is located close to a number of stunning, uncrowded beaches but also beautiful country & forest walks. The breakfast on Monday morning was delicious and the pizzas in the evening were brilliant (I'd love to know the tomato sauce recipe). A great way to meet fellow campers on the site. There's so much here for children to learn which is such an important part of a holiday - from feeding the animals in the morning to all the interesting pieces of nature information dotted around the site and from talking to the hosts. It was one of those holidays you come away from feeling relaxed and refreshed but also inspired and full of ideas. Thanks again.

From the moment we arrive in mid July for our week's stay in a family tent, we felt welcomed, safe and at ease. The plot we had was massive and with the space between plots we certainly did not feel crowded (which is something we have often felt in other sites) but we also didn't feel uncomfortably isolated. The community activities, which were not compulsory, were delightful, educational and somehow managed to involve everyone from ages 4 to 104. The facilities are clean and very well looked after - you can tell the people who own the facility care a lot about it and their guests. There are power sockets in public places so you can charge your phone and there's hot water available for you to wash your dishes. While some of the extra activities can feel a bit expensive, you know the owners are not in this for huge profits. For example, they have ten available pitches but the location consists of more than than. The reason only ten are available is that the owners allow pitches to recover before moving other people in. It really was a lot of fun and we would love to go back next year! Location-wise, you're in a very green part of the country, surrounded by trees and fields. At night you will hear animals going about their nocturnal business. There are clean toilets and showers. Toilets consists of compost toilets and regular porcelain toilets :) You're approximately 20 - 30 minutes from the nearest sandy beach and some 15 - 20 minutes from Aberaeron where you can buy gifts, groceries, fish & chips etc. The beaches we went to this year were New Quay (Nice beach and shops and not too commercialised - not as bad as Tenby for example), Penbryn (so serene and beautiful it was like an otherworldly paradise), Llangrannog (watch the parking rules) and Mwnt (beautiful cove). Depending on the time of year, you may want to watch out for jellyfish and you may want to make sure you and your little ones wear water shoes in case anyone steps on a Weever Fish.

I almost don't want to leave a good review to make sure this incredible little site isn't booked up next time we want to go. A fantastic, well appointed and welcoming place where children roam free and parents enjoy sitting in their private pitch surrounded by wild flowers and butterflies. The owners are amazing and could not be more helpful, the campfire singsongs were a huge hit with the kids and a real ice breaker for them to make new fast friends for the duration of the stay. The pizza night was incredible with some of the nicest traditional pizzas we've had in the UK. I heard great things about the fine dining and cooked breakfast too I could not recommend this place enough, it's a little perfect hideaway surrounded by the most beautiful landscape, beaches and towns Wales has to offer. You will not go wrong if you book.

Alison and Gyles truly love their space and show you how to get the most out of the joy and tranquility of your holiday. Unobtrusively Covid safe. Lots of fun and laughter. Perfect location for days out to New Quay, Llangrannog and Aberaeron. Definitely sign up for breakfast and pizza and Gyles' culinary delights! Thank you for an amazing time!!

Forest Lodge

Such a lovely welcoming place - we stayed in one of the lodges which was great and very comfortable. The camping pitches also looked well thought out and well placed, and we’d love to stay in the Shepherd’s hut in the future! Our kids (10 and 8) loved the freedom - making friends, picking blackberries, playing in the woods and stream. They enjoyed the bushcraft morning and pizzas one evening too. We had pretty good weather so were on the beach (Llangrannog) a lot. On a wet day we went to Aberystwyth and explored the castle and went on the cliff railway. Would also recommend watching the Red Kite feeding at Bwlch Nant yr Arian. Thank you for a restful and enjoyable stay.

We would highly recommend this campsite and enjoyed our stay so much. The grounds are beautiful, yet very natural and there is plenty of space to spread out and relax. There is also a lot of charming character in the way the site and amenities have been designed. Thank you for a lovely holiday.

Naturesbase is where families meet new friends, eat together, play together, create together, explore together and relax together. The site is small, just 10 pitches and 3 lodges surrounding a relaxing central courtyard set in 8 acres to discover. Each pitch has a fire pit and surrounded by long meadow grass, abundant flowers and hedges, providing ample space between each pitch. There is a hill fort to play on, den to build in the woods, animals to feed and a stream to paddle in. If camping is not for you but you want to enjoy the alfresco experience the lodges are an ideal alternative, fresh air with a few more luxuries, feather pillows and cosy duvets. The site is tucked away but within easy reach of the beautiful harbour town of Aberaeron, pubs, restaurants, beaches and walks. This is a truly natural Welsh haven for you to experience, nestled between the Cambrian mountains and Cardigan Bay. We believe in providing a quality uncrowded campsite where adults can relax and enjoy the open countryside, whilst children enjoy the rugged excitement nature has to offer. A core feature is the promotion of environmentally responsible tourism which we strive to incorporate into all aspects of how we manage the site. There is a hill fort to play on, a stream to dam, family bush craft sessions, a pizza evening with children's campfire, big barn breakfasts twice a week and even a pop restaurant once a week. Just 5 miles from the beautiful harbour town of Aberaeron and beaches yet just half an hour from the remote Cambrian mountains.

Nearby attractions

Ceredigion has a unique unspoiled charm of it own. It might take a little longer to get here but when you do you'll understand. There are the beautiful beaches, dolphin spotting, secret mountains, great places to eat, wild walks, little market towns, outdoor adventure, mounting biking, kayaking, surfing, heritage, ruined abbeys, National trust estates, or just stay and relax within the beauty of the site and complete join the activity trail, play on the hill fort, dam the stream and enjoy the dark starry skies around your own fire. A week is not enough time to absorb. Take the steam train (01970 625819) from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge. The scenery is eye-poppingly stunning. Just half an hour’s drive away you’ll find the sheltered sands of Llangrannog Beach. It’s a beautiful spot with plenty of amenities, so is very family-friendly. Dogs are allowed, but must be on leads. There is a good dog-walking beach about 5 miles from the site (Cei Bach beach). The natural wildernesses of the Cambrian Mountains are close at hand for hikes and picnicking.

Food and drink

There are so many great places to eat for all tastes. On site we offer Welsh cooked breakfasts in the communal barn, twice a week and the unforgettable pizza night followed by singing around the fire campfire, all welcome. We also have a constant supply of tempting cakes on offer in the honesty shop. For eating out, the seafood at Aberaeron’s Harbourmaster (01545 570755) is hard to beat and, in the other direction, the Talbot Hotel (01974 298208) is a proper Welsh pub with hearty meals and afternoon teas. The Celtic ( Aberaeron) fish and chips are great to grab whilst enjoying watching the sun go down on the harbour wall. The Cellar and Hive are great family places overlooking the inner harbour and the Stubborn Duckling is a new fine dining restaurant which is wonderful. Newquay 7 miles away has a range of pubs, cafes and restaurants ( Bluebell & Pepper pot ) after a days dolphin spotting or surfing.
