Peaceful glamping in an undisturbed meadow in beautiful Bressingham Gardens

The family behind the world-renowned Bressingham Gardens have opened up a glamping meadow for guests. Lucky visitors are now able to settle into bell tents pitched in a tree-lined, wildlife-watching wonderland within Bressingham’s 17 acres of landscaped Norfolk greenery. The gardens are home to an incredible 8,000 plant species, but when it comes to glamping, the numbers are impressive in the other direction. There are just two bell tents, offering peaceful adults-only breaks among the blooms.

Bressingham’s holiday accommodation began with its gorgeous Georgian Mansion being rented out for stays. After seeing its success, host Matt Bloom wanted to provide smaller and more back-to-basics accommodation firmly planted within the flora. As such, two bell tents have been pitched in a relatively undisturbed meadow; the grass kept unmowed save for the pathways, allowing the surrounding wildlife to flourish. There’s a traditional and lunar bell tent here, both furnished with the latter boasting more headroom. All conveniences are supplied — kettle and cafetiere for tea and coffee, stove for cooking, cutlery and the like — while a wood-burning stove and firepit keep things nice and toasty both inside and out. There’s a compost loo but no shower and the tents are off-grid though a fully-charged battery pack will power lighting inside your tent with solar lights outside.

But it’s Bressingham Garden itself that’s the real star of the show. The ongoing passion project of three generations of the Bloom family, this beautiful place is free to explore for those glamping. Here, guests are able to enjoy the wide array of European perennial plants displayed in the rolling Dell Garden, the conifers and heathers gathered in the wonderfully named Foggy Bottom Garden and the autumnal redwood in Adrian’s Wood. Be sure to set your alarm for an early morning, too, as then you’ll have the best chance of spotting the wilder life living here, from the robins, swallows and sparrowhawks, to the rabbits, hares and stoats.

Reserved for 2 adults only, the bell tents are designed for simple but luxurious comfort, fully carpeted, with a made up king-size bed, bespoke wooden furniture, and snug seating. There is a wood burning stove for cosy nights in, and all the kit you need to prepare a meal for two. There is also a fire-pit for tranquil evenings, flame-gazing, and barbecuing. The spacious 5m bell tents are ‘off-grid’. However, guests are provided with a fully charged battery pack to power warm led-lighting inside the tent, and to recharge phones and tablets. Solar lighting guides your way outside, with added light from led-lanterns. There is no wifi - but there is excellent 4G coverage from EE. Mains water is available nearby, as is our eco-friendly compost loo. Included in the price of your stay is; Free access to the public gardens, from dawn until dusk, during your stay. A great little spot

Sunrise Bell Tent

A very lovely bell Tent set in gorgeous grounds! It has most things you require for a very comfortable few days. We found the bed super comfy and had plenty of blankets if you felt the cold. We felt the outside seating would be better placed by the back of the tent rather than half way up the path but other than this we wouldn’t fault our stay.

The wild meadow was exceptional , the facilities were well thought out .. compost loo was very clean and tidy .. the tent was cosy and well equipped , would return in a heartbeat.. .. the gardens and steam museum are well worth a visit if you have time ..

Sunset Bell Tent

We had an amazing stay at the sunset bell tent. The location is stunning, quiet and private. It was equipped with everything you need for a stay. This is a unique little campsite surrounded by beautiful gardens. We went in the summer but I’d love to return one day in the autumn to make use of the log burner. Thank you for such a lovely experience.

The Sunrise bell tent was such a beautiful stay. We were fortunate to enjoy the meadow and gardens in their July glory, but when night set in the bed & bedding were - dreamy! The location is beautiful, the tent impeccable, I particularly liked the handmade wooden furniture. For those not yet acquainted with compost loos: give this one a go first, you will be converted! It is the cleanest, kindest introduction to a compost toilet there could possibly be. (Although our neighbours evidently couldn’t fathom where to put their used toilet roll… perhaps an additional note is necessary to explain not to put used loo roll in a funnel designed for fluids which includes a fine sieve to catch anything OTHER THAN fluids… so where did they think it was gonna end up, other than -up?!) That is no slight on Matt’s pitch, however, just a reminder to future campers to put solid objects in big spaces and (only) liquids in funnels. For Matt: I cleared the ‘clog’, for fear that you might have imagined it was caused by me/us!

It’s a lovely and romantic place to stay, the bell tent is located in a huge garden but private area . the bell tent is big and clean, and the owner is very thoughtful to offer what we need.

Sunrise Bell Tent

The area that the tents are in feels private and is a pretty wild meadow type setting that is well maintained. Sunrise tent was comfortable and stylish with furniture made from fallen trees from the main gardens. We had a comfortable stay albeit just for 1 night, and enjoyed a walk around the main gardens in the morning.

Sunset Bell Tent

Had a lovely stay in the Sunrise tent! Comfy beds, super clean, and wonderfully presented. Quiet location away from other visitors with the gardens just next door which were lovely to look around. Had everything you need for cooking some meals, but would need to bring along a cool box for fresh food and tongs if you were looking to BBQ. Would definitely recommend and would stay again. Thanks so much!

What a great idea - glamping in these beautiful gardens! The colour in the gardens is stunning. The bell tent was surprisingly spacious with everything made especially to fit, but also very cosy with lots of wood and warm colours. We cooked our steaks on the brazier with a beautiful moon overhead. The woodstove was lovely to sit in front of and kept the tent warm, and the hot water bottles were a welcome touch 😊. Waking up for an early morning stroll in the gardens (with the birds and rabbits) was so special. We made egg and bacon toasties with coffee on the woodstove for breakfast. We also really liked the whole concept of the eco compost loo (which is recycled into the gardens). Looking forward to revisiting in the Summer!

Reserved for two adults only, the bell tents are designed for simple but luxurious comfort, with a kingsize bed, bespoke wooden furniture, and snug seating. There is a wood-burning stove for cosy nights in, and all the kit you need to prepare a meal for two. There is also a fire-pit for tranquil evenings, flame-gazing, and barbecuing. Spend your days relaxing in the glade, wandering the many gardens, or exploring the Waveney valley and Norfolk-Suffolk countryside. Come and experience the wilder side of Bressingham!

Nearby attractions

Bressingham Gardens (01379 686900) is free to visit for guests and is the main feature of the site. The gardens are open to the public from 10.30am to 5pm, though the site itself is kept private from the areas in which the public will be exploring. Additionally, the Bressingham Steam Museum is also part of the site (open April-October), giving you the chance to board a steam engine to experience the gardens from a different perspective. For a spot of walking, you can visit Wortham Ling (two miles from site), a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Redgrave and Lopham Fen is also a little over two miles away, another Site of Special Scientific Interest that houses a diverse range of both plants and animals, along with the opportunity to follow the River Waveney.

Food and drink

The Bressingham Steam Museum Cafe is ideal for a bite to eat close to the site. There are also a number of pubs, restaurants and cafes close to the Gardens. The Chequers Inn (01379 688175) is only a 2-minute walk from site, serving delicious food in a lovely, modern interior. The White Hart (01379 643597) is a couple of minutes further up the road, a cosy pub with a varied menu ideal for a tipple within close distance to the site. Number 11 (01379 644186) bar and restaurant is two-and-a-half miles away, priding itself on its locally-sourced ingredients and drinks. Or, if you want to pop out for some fish and chips, you'll be taken care of at Bailey's (01379 308130), a takeaway that you can bring back with you after a five-minute drive.
