Lakeside glamping near Bridport and Dorset’s Jurassic Coast

Fishing, fossil hunting and campfires are some of the highlights of stays at Mangerton Lake in the Dorset countryside. This small glamping site is set around the edge of a two-acre fishing lake that’s surrounded by rolling fields just outside the market town of Bridport and only a few miles from the Jurassic Coast. You stay in one of two simply furnished bell tents or in a camping pod that looks right across the water. Whichever you choose and whether you’re here for fishing, fossils, fires – or a combination of all three – it’d be hard not to fall for the charms of this lakeside glamping site.

The pod and the bell tents each offer a way to stay that combines the charm of camping and outdoor life with a few home comforts thrown in. Those are ramped up in the pod – which offers accommodation under a solid roof, a lakeside deck outside and even a Smart TV. It’s got a kettle, a fridge and a microwave too making it a great little hideaway. The bell tents, meanwhile, are for folk who prefer the fun of sleeping under canvas. They have a double bed and two singles inside, a fire pit and seating outside and access to a shared fridge, microwave and kettle a short walk away at the facilities cabin. This (featuring hot showers, flushing loos and washing-up sinks) is shared between all three. If you want your own facilities, there is another souped-up option on site; a contemporary tiny home that’s currently bookable elsewhere.

Fishing for the carp, roach and tench in the lake is included in your stay and walks from the site are easy. There’s a footpath that passes right by. You can use it to navigate to the nearest pub or into town. Alternatively hop in the car and the best of the Jurassic Coast is easily reached. West Bay is the closest place to hit the beach but Charmouth and Lyme Regis are not too much further, less than half an hour in the car.

Offering amazing views over the valley and lake it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. Fall asleep to the sound of the spring bubbling and wake up to beautiful views in one of Dorsets areas of outstanding natural beauty. If you are an angler our lake is well stocked with Carp, Roach and Tench, fishing is included with your stay. We are 3 miles from the nearest beaches or you can walk straight onto the footpaths and explore the countryside. We are about 1.5 miles from the historic market town of Bridport which is well know for its antiques and vintage markets. We are also close to some fabulous restaurants, cafes and pubs.
Nearby attractions

Mangerton Lake backs on to a footpath that leads into the Dorset countryside. The Monarch’s Way, long-distance footpath, passes close by too and the coast offers the South West Coast Path for walks by the sea. The closest place to join it – or to reach the beach – is West Bay (three miles), a mile or so beyond the market town of Bridport. The whole area is part of the UNESCO world Heritage-listed Jurassic Coast but, perhaps, the best place to go for fossil hunting is Charmouth or Lyme Regis. Scour the beach or join one of the guided fossil hunts on offer from Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre or the Lyme Regis Museum where you can also see some local finds. Lyme Regis, with its cobbled streets and The Cobb harbour arm, is a particularly picturesque place to visit. In the other direction along the coast, Abbotsbury (11 miles) is famous for its 600-year-old colony of mute swans, established by Benadictine monks. There’s a sub-tropical gardens nearby too. Closer to site, the Furleigh Wine Estate offers a grown-up day out with tours on the vineyard and tastings of the sparkling wine that’s produced there.

Food and drink

There are two pubs within walking distance of Mangerton Lake. The closest is The Loders Arms (a mile on footpaths, slightly further in the car) which offers seasonal, local produce in its menus. The Pymore Inn is another good option (also about a mile) and has a large beer garden. For breakfasts, coffee and cake or afternoon tea, Mangerton Mill, is about the same distance from site and comes recommended by your hosts. The market town of Bridport is less than two miles away, and offers plenty more coffee shops, pubs and eateries plus a good selection of local shops if you want to buy ingredients to barbecue back on site. There’s also a twice weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays in town.
