Camping and glamping in the Lincolnshire Fenland with campfires, alpacas and a positive vibe

Do you fancy an old-fashioned camping holiday with a campfire? Or to stay aboard an American schoolbus? Do you want to spend more time outdoors and for your holidays to be in tune with nature rather than at odds with it? Then the advice of the owners at Big Sky Hideaway is to say yes more – and to head on over to their glamping site in the Lincolnshire Fens. It’s the latest project of the adventurer, motivational speaker and community-organiser Dave Cornthwaite and his wife Emms. This inspirational pair exude positive energy and have set up Big Sky Hideaway as a place to share it by providing escapes in nature which are powered by renewable energy.

Out on their 14-acre patch of flat Lincolnshire fenland, you can pitch your own tent or stay in one of their glamping pads. There’s a refurbed double decker called the Yes Bus, an American Schoolbus, a bell tent and a pair of Landpods which are modern, purpose-built camping cabins. Each offers space to hang out, a comfy place to lay your head and cooking facilities too. On the buses, that’s included inside by way of a small but well-equipped kitchenette and at the Landpods, you’ll have access to a more rustic field kitchen.

Rustic is the right word here when it comes to the other facilities too. There are composting toilets and simple shower cubicles dotted about. And whether you’re camping or glamping here, you’ll have a fire pit provided as the campfire is an important part of the Big Sky experience; encouraging you to spend more time outdoors. To that end, there are also woodland walks and a small herd of alpacas which you can help to feed, for a small extra fee.

In case you haven’t picked up on it, “saying yes more” is the philosophy of campsite owners Dave and Emms. It’s also the basis of the YesTribe, a community Dave founded, inspired by the kindness of strangers he met on travels around the world. Should you want to say yes to your own adventures around their new basecamp, you’ll find the flat country lanes are perfect for walks and gentle bike rides under the big skies that this landscape reveals. The River Witham is a couple of miles from site, the market town of Boston, six miles away, and the wildlife-rich Lincolnshire Coast is a few miles beyond that, it’s marshy nature reserves closest to site with big sandy beaches further north. But are they worth the drive? You can probably guess the answer.

Big Meadow Camping

100%
(15)
Tent pitch · Sleeps 4
With birdsong as the theme tune, set up your tent in a private pitch, surrounded by long grass and newly planted trees in our vehicle-free meadow. Our Big Meadow was made for a simple camping experience and is surrounded by a protective hug of trees. We're pretty sure you'll love the tranquility, with long grass all around making the pitches almost feel like your very own room. Most pitches in the meadow are a handsome distance from each other to ensure your peace and quiet. There are a small handful of pitches in proximity to others, for campers who would like to be close to friends and family. If you'd like a particular pitch (close to toilets or far from everyone or likely to have more shade etc) just message us when you book and we'll be sure to save you the best spot we have. The camping meadow is vehicle free so you don’t have to worry about noise and safety, but don't worry, the car park is no more than 100 metres away and we supply (really) big wheelbarrows so you can get your gear between car and camp. If you'd like a campfire we can bring over a firepit and we sell seasoned wood and kindling on site, meaning you’ll have a roaring, long-lasting fire in no time. Each pitch is plenty big enough for two small-small/medium tents but if you have a big tent you're probably looking at one tent per pitch. We also have a larger mown area for small groups or families who have multiple (or really big) tents! If this sounds right for you just get in touch and we'll reserve the big pitch for you! Please note that we'd appreciate contact before booking if you're planning to camp with a large group of adults (more than 6) as we like to ensure that Big Sky is a peaceful and family-friendly campsite and larger groups of adults can be intimidating, which isn't our style. Thanks for understanding and please drop us a line if you think this applies to you. If you like the idea of escaping to nature and getting away from it all without needing a whole lotta luxury, this is your place. All of our camping pitches are electricity free but we open up our communal barn in the evenings and you’re welcome to charge your phones in there. We'll do everything we can to make your stay at Big Sky as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. We love surprising our guests and making your stay unique so if you have any ideas we might be able to help with don't hesitate to ask :) Camping facilities: We've a block with eco loos in our camping field and a wash stand for dishes and hands. There are two drinking water taps on site, one in the camping meadow and one by the barn a short walk away The camping meadow is vehicle-free There is no power in the camping meadow Site Rules: Please see our main booking terms section for all terms, but here are the highlights Check-in: 2pm Check- out: 11am No pets. We love all animals, dogs included, but sadly our alpacas and the hundreds of ground-dwelling birds in our meadows do not

Grass Meadow Campervan Pitch

100%
(1)
Vehicle pitch · Sleeps 4 · Vehicles under 6 m
For simple, peaceful small-van stays beneath wide open skies, at the top end of a long, grassy meadow where over one thousand young trees have been planted, you’ll find an open area of grass mowed flat and set aside for small campervans. Although during events and microfestivals over twenty vans have happily schnuggled into this space, in normal campsite mode we only open this space up to five vans, so you’ll have plenty of space between your pitch and others. Our van pitches are basic, just off-grid grass sites for vans and vehicles with roof tents. The van sites don't have electric hook-up, toilet pump-out or dedicated water points fill-up, although you can fill up smaller containers at our camping tap a short walk away. There’s an eco loo right by the campervan area. As access is tight along a track sided with overhanging trees, we’re sorry not to be able to take any vehicles longer than 6m or higher than 2m, so no motorhomes or caravans. Please note: Tree planting: Our van pitches are in what is currently our tree planting meadow - so there are hundreds of plastic tubes in the meadow - these each create a lovely little eco system for our newly planted saplings and protect them from animals, but we're very conscious that parking up in a field of plastic tubes may not be what you're looking for, although some people love that they're hanging out in what will one day be a woodland. (See pictures for what the field looks like) Poor weather: As our pitches are grass if the weather has been overly wet (especially during Spring) we may well find you a spot elsewhere on site, just to make sure you don't get stuck! If you’re looking for a place for a group of vans, we have held rallies and availability-permitting can hire out our whole site, or just the campervan area. Please enquire about this. We'll do everything we can to make your stay at Big Sky as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. We love surprising our guests and making your stay unique so if you have any ideas we might be able to help with don't hesitate to ask :)

Double Decker with Alpaca Views

100%
(2)
Van/bus · Sleeps 5
Enjoy a unique stay on a very cool double decker, complete with seating, kitchen, wood burner, library and chill-out space. Perfect for a small group of friends, a family or even some lone creative time, the YesBus has provided seeds of inspiration for hundreds of adventures and projects over the years and we always aim for your stay to be a platform for positive change. Hang out at the downstairs dinner table for meals or games, soak up hundreds of great ideas found in the adventure library upstairs (you might even find a signed copy or three), or simply enjoy a countryside pause in one of our hammocks. The YesBus lives right next to the alpaca paddock and outside you'll find seating, a firebowl and the solar panels that provide energy to the bus. What you'll find downstairs: Wood burner Fully fitted kitchen including four-ring gas hob, oven and grill and fridge. Seating and table for 6-8 Basic crockery, cutlery, mugs and cooking equipment Power points with USBs throughout the bus (1000W limit - Not suitable for high draw items like hair dryers, slow cookers etc!) Board games galore Unlimited fresh water Wet room/ entrance through driver's cabin Upstairs: Double bed and pull-out double futon upstairs, plus extra sleeping space in hammocks or inflatable mattresses. We provide bedsheets, mattresses and toppers but ask guests to bring their own pillows, duvets (or sleeping bags), and covers Front window desk space Adventure library Outside: Firebowl (we sell baskets of firewood) Picnic bench Private eco loo and shower cubicle 20 metres walk from the bus The bit where we're honest: We're pretty confident that the unique benefits of our accommodations by far outweigh the downsides, but our site is off grid and can't offer all the shiny comforts of 5* hotel luxury, so if you like a long, hot bath on your holidays...well, you should read this before booking! Buses are thin metal and lots of windows, which means they're super hard to insulate and can be cold when the climate outside is chilly. This is a strong appeal for many but if you feel the cold a lot the colder months may not be best for you. The YesBus wood burner does a lovely job at keeping the downstairs cosy. If you're not a fan of bugs, flies, spiders, fresh air, the distant sound of tractors or cows or anything much to do with being outside in the countryside, our site may not be your ideal getaway! Our buses are powered by solar panels and while we do everything we can to ensure the batteries are topped up before our guests visit we can't 100% promise you'll have all-singing, all dancing power, especially during long, cloudy weeks (which are thankfully few and far between from Spring to Autumn in sunny Lincolnshire). Touch wood, we've only had one occasion when a guest didn't have power throughout - but they loved our backup plan with additional solar lights throughout and an electric generator offering three pin and USB power. To avoid wasting water and the cost of providing infrastructure and mains supply across acres of land, we've opted for lower level eco friendly facilities. The toilets are composting and we ensure they stay clean and scent free, and showers are delivered in heated bags. As long as you're not expecting the Hilton, you'll be good! In fact, our loos always get great feedback! While we love animals we can't allow pets on site as they stress our alpacas out. We'll do everything we can to make your stay at Big Sky as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. We love surprising our guests and making your stay unique so if you have any ideas we might be able to help with don't hesitate to ask :)

Shepherd's Hut

100%
(1)
Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 2
Perfect for one or two people who desire nothing more than time to switch off and get back to basics, without giving up a comfy bed. UNPLUG, RELAX, REST The Shepherd's Hut enjoys its own quiet patch with unbroken views across our tree planting meadow, complete with outdoor firepit and seating. We see the Hut as the ideal escape for a campfire-centric break in nature, or as a pod where creative juices can run wild. Whether you plan on spending quality time with a book or working on your next novel, we've got you covered. The Hut boasts an extendable bed which slides out from a large single to a healthy double. You'll also find a wood burning stove, stable door and a fold-out table. It's worth noting that the hut is exactly 6 foot wide, so if you're in that region of height a full stretch out on the bed will mean your toes encounter a wall! Our Dave is 5' 11 and needs to sleep diagonally in there. So if you're very tall the Shepherd's Hut may not be ideal if you're planning to come with a friend! Although the Hut is built without electrics we've installed a smart little solar-powered system which will ensure you've plenty of light even when the sun goes down. If you'd like to use the Hut as a place to catch up with work, we offer an add-on extra including a solar generator, which can easily keep your laptop and phone charged throughout your stay. Just outside you'll find a firebowl, grill and seating. We can even bring over a hammock on a stand if you'd prefer! Hire of the Shepherd's Hut includes: Comfy accommodation for 1 or 2 We provide bedsheets, mattresses and toppers but ask guests to bring their own pillows, duvets (or sleeping bags), and covers (we can hire bedding if needed) Exclusive use of the Shepherd's Hut and all its amenities Firepit (we sell seasoned wood on site) Tripod grill Outdoor kettle Seating for two Camp kitchen with single hob burner and basic camping crockery, cutlery, mugs and cooking equipment 40l cool box (we replenish with ice packs when needed) Unlimited fresh water Add-ons (just ask Dave or Em for these after you've booked, or on arrival) £5 per day: 250W solar powered power pack (this can happily charge a laptop, has two USB charging points and comes with a solar panel to charge it up again on sunny days. Not suitable for high draw items like hair dryers, slow cookers etc! £20 for your stay: Full bedding, including duvet, pillow and covers We're always happy to discuss discounts for anyone who fancies a longer stay writing a book or doing creative stuff! Woodland Haven Hammock Sky Tent

Quirky · Sleeps 1
Our hammock village is a floating wonderland with comfortable, insulated lay-flat sky tents. Whether you're a seasoned hammocker or a first-time go-getter, our hammock village has been designed to make sleeping between the trees easy, fun and comfortable. Our bedroom hammocks are Haven Tents, which have a superb lay-flat design and, in case you're worried about falling out overnight, they're totally unflippable. However you sleep at home - on your back, belly or side, you'll be able to do the same here, just with the magic of floating introduced to your nap time. The insulated sleeping mat stops the cold drifting up from below and spacious spreader bars and handy storage pockets mean you'll not feel claustrophobic in your hammock. There's lots of space inside the hammock and the bug net and rainfly (which are both removable for beautiful summer nights) offer as much protection as you need. There's something really special about floating a couple of feet above our little planet and we're convinced that there's nothing like hammock camping. In addition, we've created a little garden around each of our Haven Hammocks, just for you. We provide seating, a firepit and a larger nearby woodland shelter if you fancy hanging out in a larger space. If you're hammocking with friends, we can ensure you're all in the same area of woodland. All you need to do now is say "Yes! Let's do it!" and pack your sleeping bag. We recommend a pillow, too... :) What to pack Treat a stay in the hammock village like you’re camping, with a difference. We’ll provide the trees and hammock, which includes a sleeping mat. All you need to do is bring a sleeping bag or duvet, a pillow is always nice, and don’t forget cooking equipment and food! For first-timers The sensation of sleeping in a hammock is quite unique and we find that for first-timers the first night isn’t always the best, in sleep terms. That said, it’s hard not to love waking up beneath the canopy, blurry eyed and swinging back and forth. Booking for more than one?! Each of the Haven Hammocks is for one-person, so when you’re trying to book a stay for more than one, the Havens won’t show up. But don’t worry, when you’re booking just click ‘book multiple accommodation units’ on the page after your date selection, and you’ll be able to select multiple hammocks if you’re booking with one or more friends.

Treat yourself to time away in a peaceful hideaway beneath the big skies of Lincolnshire. The Big Sky Hideaway is a camping and glamping farm with a difference. From the moment you turn off the road and head down our track you’ll feel like you’re escaping day-to-day stresses, and that’s exactly how we like it. Whether you choose to stay on one of our gorgeous converted buses, tuck yourself away in the woodland in one of three very cool Landpods, hang out in our hammock village or simply decide to gift your tent a private patch of fluffy grass in our camping meadow, you’ll be greeted with a smile and a feeling of renewed optimism. Little signs dotted around the site offer happy reminders of the best things in life: good friends, kindness and a dash of adventure. The whole site is powered by renewable energy and a sense of community. Oh, and did we mention our alpacas? Giggle as they frolic around their garden without a care in the world. We really can’t wait to welcome you for your next holiday. As our motto goes: say yes more!

You can visit RSPB Frampton Marsh to see what you can spot and learn more. For beaches, head further north to Skegness and beyond. About 30 miles from site are the quieter beaches of Anderby Creek and Mablethorpe. One of the closest attractions to site is the quirky and nostalgic little Bubblecar Museum, just three miles down the road (open weekends and bank holidays only). The Ark Wildlife park is 12 miles away and usually a hit with kids.

Food and drink

For shops, supplies and a choice of places to eat out, head into Boston, a 10-minute drive away. There is a market there every Wednesday and Saturday morning too. The closest place to eat out is Witham and Blues (01205 280546), a riverside American diner, two miles from site or, in the other direction, there's The Wheatsheaf Bar and Grill (01205 290347) at Hubbert's Bridge.
