Secluded tipi glamping in the Wye Valley set on a working, riverside, dairy farm

There are plenty of glamping sites in the Wye Valley but few can boast the level of privacy and the immediate access to the river that White House Farm can offer. Home to just six, family-sized tipi – kitted out with beds, lamps, and hand-made furniture – this working dairy farm is part glamping site and part rudimentary riverside retreat. Home-spun quirks include your own outdoor cinema (a taught canvas screen, a projector and a collection of good DVDs) and up-cycled pallets that have been turned into rustic furnishings. Around your tipi, meanwhile, the orchard setting allows for fresh apple picking in late summer and blackberry foraging along the bushes if the neighbouring cows haven’t already beat you to it.

One of White House Farm’s real gifts is a mile-long stretch of the River Wye that idles its way south east across the farm. A shallow, pebble beach runs down to the water – a prize spot for evening barbecues, wild swimming and launching paddleboards and canoes. If you don't have your own, don't worry – they are available to rent and instructed sessions can be booked in too. In fact, that's just one of the bookable activities on site which range from yoga to foraging.

On foot, the river’s valley offers plenty more to uncover. The wooded hillsides are littered with good walking routes, while even exploring the local village of How Caple provides ample intriguing discoveries. The compact, medieval church, for example, is home to an original Norman font and 16th-centuy artwork from southern Germany (though no-one knows how it got there), while, beyond it, the 11-acre gardens of the Edwardian, manor house, How Caple Court are occasionally open to the public too. Further afield there are the better known attractions of the Wye Valley: Hereford, to the north, and Ross-on-Wye six miles south, both worthy day-trips – if you can drag yourself away from the campsite's private stretch of river.

Home to six, family-sized tipis – kitted out with beds, lamps, and hand-made furniture – this working dairy farm in the Wye Valley is part glamping site and part riverside retreat. Homely quirks include your own outdoor cinema and up-cycled pallets that have been turned into rustic furnishings. Plus, one of White House Farm’s real gifts is a mile-long stretch of the River Wye that idles its way south east across the farm. There is plenty to do on-site, including: - BBQ and firepit - Pizza oven - Paddleboarding and canoeing - Children's area - Foraging tours - Wild swimming in the river - Yoga - Fishing - Hiking - Farm tours There are great facilities for all cooking needs. As well as clean and nice bathrooms. Check-in 3pm, check-out 10am
Nearby attractions
There's lots to do right here on site from farm tours with farmer Will to wild swimming sessions with a qualified instructor. You can launch canoes and kayaks into the river from the site's private pebble beach and have a lesson in how to paddleboard too. Paddleboards and canoes can be hired on site. There's also yoga, foraging, pizza making and more – which you can find out about from your hosts once you've booked your stay. In addition, there are footpaths aplenty on the doorstep. If it's views you're after, the route from Black Hill to Hay Bluff takes some topping. Head into Hereford or Ross-on-Wye for independent shops and townie delights – cafés, restaurants, cider museums and more – or visit Goodrich Castle (01600 890538), a stunning ruin just south west of Ross, with roll-downable grassy banks and towers to climb. Puzzlewood (01594 833187) in the Forest of Dean has an indoor wood puzzle maze and animals to pet for rainy days. When sun comes out, explore its 15 acres of moss-covered paths, said to be J.R.R. Tolkien’s inspiration for The Lord of the Rings.
Food and drink

There's nothing quite on the doorstep, but cast your net around four or five miles from the glamping site and there are heaps of options. The nearest pub is the New Harp in Hoarwithy (four miles), closely followed by the Moody Cow in the opposite direction (four miles). The Crown at Woolhope (five miles), though, is especially recommended by Richard at White House Farm. In Hereford (10 miles), try The Book Shop for modern British or The Beefy Boys for burgers. Finally, for general goods, drive the five miles to Fownhope village where there is a decent butchers and corner shop.
