Family-friendly camping on a Hampshire farm, edging the New Forest National Park.

Can you remember the exact moment when you became hooked on camping for the first time? At Shelley Oaks, that snapshot moment would be watching the sun rise over the enchanting, dewy pine woodland, at the edge of the site or perhaps the savoury aromas of the full English breakfasts being rustled up by the sleepy campers as they begin to light their campfires. There’s a feeling of community and freedom that Caroline and her family at Shelley Oaks, are cultivating. There is a chilled, family friendly vibe with an opportunity to recharge your batteries.

Camping is a new venture for the Jewell family on their 10 acres of grassland touching the North East edge of the New Forest. You will find only 20 pitches and your main neighbours, over the fence and in surrounding fields, are a flock of fluffy sheep. Caroline wanted to offer campers room to spread out and have their own space and to that end, you can pitch your tent right next to the idyllic, pine woodland. If you’re bringing children, they will, no doubt, have a blast chasing each other within the trees. Boasting brand new shower and toilet facilities, two undercover washing up stations and with campfires allowed, this is family camping at its best.

The farm has direct access to a footpath that runs between West Wellow and the New Forest, so you can walk back to the site after a picnic and gaze up at the unpolluted night sky. For those with children who are super fans of Peppa Pig, Paultons Park is just a five-minute drive away or bring bikes and make the most of the car-free trails through the New Forest, looking out for deer and New Forest ponies. If you prefer peonies over ponies, meanwhile, the stunning Sir Harold Hillier Gardens are also within 15 minutes' drive, home to an incredible 70 different varieties of peony, as well as 20 different wisteria – perfect if you want to stroll the grounds pretending you’re in a period drama.

Camping pitches on field edges, either individually marked or informal areas for small groups. Large 'play' pitch in the center of the field. Short walk to facilities block in the farm barns. Level grass pitches, park at pitch. Water points in field and at wash up area. Toilets and showers plus a family shower room with baby change station. Wash up sinks with hot water and a small fridge freezer. No electric points. Huge local offering of things to do. Later perhaps a walk to Carlos for an ice cream then chill out in front of the fire and watch the sunset. Dug out fire pits on most pitches (free of charge), log bags available to buy. Perfect!

Shelley Oaks Farm campsite is a relaxed, family friendly pop-up site on a working farm with a chilled vibe and excellent basic facilities including hot showers. We love our family farm in rural Hampshire and we would like you to come and enjoy it with us; spend some quality time and reconnect with the countryside. Here you can take in the scenery, interact with the farm animals and admire the abundant wildlife. Our spacious, flat, grass camping field of 10 acres with direct access to a little pine woodland has plenty of space to spread out and room to play. We welcome tents and small campervans only. Situated between Romsey, Salisbury and Southampton on the edge of the beautiful New Forest National Park, Shelley Oaks has good transport links. Just 5 minutes from Junction 2 of the M27 means less time in the car and more time to relax and enjoy. A perfect base to explore the local area. Once you’ve tired everyone out you can kick back and enjoy the beautiful sunsets and night skies whilst relaxing around the campfire. We promote a calm atmosphere with no amplified music at any time and quiet after 10pm. We also have a 'No admittance to Twits' policy.
Nearby attractions

There's plenty for families to do in the local area, not least taking bikes and heading in to the New Forest National Park, which has a host of good car-free cycle trails and footpaths that offer a good way of seeing the native deer and New Forest ponies. Paultons Park is a five-minute drive away, while it's also less than 10 to the picturesque market town of Romsey, home to Miss Moody's Tudor Tea Rooms and other historic delights. Miss Moody, the last owner of Moody’s Gunshop, ran a traditional English Tea Room both before and after the Second World War. Tea is still served in bone china teacups with a selection of cakes on offer in a quaint Tudor cottage. Also in the centre of Romsey lies the The Tipsy Pig Craft Alehouse (01794 501521), which offers an extremely impressive collection of ales to choose from. No fewer than seven National Trust sites are within 20 miles, including the beautiful Mottisfont, a 15-minute drive away. New Forest Wildlife Park is a 10–15-minute drive away, as well as indoor-climbing centre Golden Gecko Climbing (ages five and above).

The Mortimer Arms (023 8081 4379) is a family-friendly pub a two minute drive away and has a beer garden and serves Sunday roasts. Fresh cheese and meats from Tatchbury Manor Farm shop (07786 697919; 'Click and Collect' on Fridays and Saturdays) is a seven-minute drive away. New Forest Family Butchers (01794 324111) is a five minute drive. Suan Thai Restaurant (01794 511115; 10-minute drive) serves tasty traditional Thai cuisine and is located in the centre of Romsey.
