Family camping on a Severn Valley farm, with campfires to enjoy, animals to meet and tractor-and-trailer rides

Jon, Ruth and their three daughters are the fourth and fifth generation farming at Red House Farm. You'll see them all at some point during your stay, whether that's welcoming you, delivering wood, cleaning the facilities or having a good natter. Their family has run a campsite from the farm for eight years and love welcoming campers to stay and playing their part in helping others make lifelong memories. Located in the heart of the Severn Valley, with beautiful views of Malvern, Cleeve, May and Bredon Hills, their's is a pretty special place to stay.

Set on a working farm with a flock of Jacob sheep, small herd of rare breed Gloucester cattle, Pygmy goats (Mabel and Martha) and Bacon the pig, the campsite is home to far more residents than just the weekend visitors. Campers, though, have a huge meadow all of their own, bordered by a hedge but otherwise spacious, flat, open. The field is some seven acres in total, with a relaxed, pitch-where-you-like way of operating (great if you want to book with a group of families). It also means there's plenty of space for games of cricket, rugby, football and flying kites. You'll be here for five minutes and the kids will have already made new friends.

Facilities-wise, things are on the move, so it slightly depends on when you arrive this summer. There’s currently a small portable block of two toilets, two urinals, two wash basins and a shower but an all-new washblock is also opening from mid July. It will house additional washing up areas, a fridge, freezer, a washing machine and more. And as well as a handful of regular electric hook ups, the campsite is also modern enough to boast two electric vehicle charging points. That's not to say the place doesn't maintain a traditional camping vibe. Campfires are very much allowed and you can buy 'barbecue baskets' full of the farm's own produce for cooking on the flames.

While fun and games in the meadow will keep littl'uns busy, tractor-and-trailer rides to see the animals are undoubtedly a highlight for family visitors and it's a good opportunity for Jon and Ruth to teach visitors about their farm. The roaming cattle and the rural setting give the sense that you're a million miles from home, though, actually, the campsite has a rather convenient location. It's not too far from the M5, and it's 10 minutes from Cheltenham and Tewkesbury, so you never need to spend much longer than is needed in the car. The good road connections also put the Malvern Hills, the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds within easy reach, with the likes of Cleeve Hill, Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle within a 15-minute drive.

Fans of animal antics, step this way… stay at award-winning Elmwicke Campsite and you'll be on a working farm surrounded by a flock of Jacob sheep, a herd of rare-breed Gloucester cattle, and the Pygmy goats Mabel and Martha, plus Bacon the pig. As you can probably tell, this spot in the Severn Vale is a proper rural retreat, with fabulous views of the Malverns and Bredon Hill to boost your Gloucestershire break. Site owners (and carers to all those animals) Jon and Ruth opened up the site in 2012; they're fourth-generation farmers and you’ll see them at some point during your stay, whether that’s welcoming you in, delivering wood, cleaning the facilities or having a good old natter. The campsite is a seven-acre flat field where you can choose your own pitch, and camp together if you’re with friends or family. There’s plenty of space for games of cricket, rugby, football, rounders or flying kites, and the owners are more than happy to take guests on a tractor-trailer ride around the fields to visit the animals. Alongside men’s and women’s loos, the amenities block also has showers and a family room with baby-changing facilities. To help you with keeping everybody clean and tidy, there’s also a laundry area with a washing machine. An on-site café is open for breakfast rolls, pastries and fresh coffee to get you going in the morning, and on some nights you can eat at the pop-up restaurant that's run by a fab local caterer. If you’d rather be self-sufficient, barbecues are allowed on site, and you can order meat packs from the farm, as well as hiring firepits and buying bags of wood, which are delivered daily.

From the host
Elmwicke campsite is located in the heart of the Severn Valley, with beautiful views of Malvern, Cleeve, Cotswolds, May and Bredon Hills. We are a working farm with a flock of Jacob sheep, small herd of rare breed Gloucester cattle, Pygmy goats (Mabel and Martha) and Bacon the pig. We have run a campsite from the farm for eight years and love welcoming campers to stay with us and help make magical memories. We think it's a pretty special place to stay. The campsite is a 7 acre field where you are able pitch where you'd like which is great whether you're on your own or booking as a group as you can be by your friends. We have acres of space for games of cricket, rugby, football, flying kites (we've seen it all). One of our favourite things is taking guests on a tractor/trailer ride around the fields to visit all the animals. We opened our new amenities block on16th July 2021 which is amazing and makes staying with us even better. Jon, Ruth, their daughters Renna, Lucy and Georgie are the 4th and 5th generation farming at Red House Farm. You'll see all of us at some point during your stay whether that's welcoming you, delivering wood, cleaning the facilities or having a good natter with you.
Nearby attractions

It's 10 minutes to the western edge of the Cotswolds (and around 15 to Sudeley Castle and Cleeve Hill), Cheltenham and the medieval town of Tewkesbury, host to one of the largest medieval festivals in the world. Sherdons Golf Course in Tredington is a five-minute drive away, they have a good pirate themed mini golf adventure round which is great fun for all ages. The Forest of Dean is around 40 minutes away, where there are lots of forest trails for cycling, as well as a sculpture trail to walk. Puzzlewood is a particularly fantastic place to visit here – the wood has been used as a filming location for many major films and television programs, including Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Gloucester is just 15 minutes’ drive away, the Cathedral there, too, is another must see for all Harry Potter fans, try and match the setting to your favourite scenes.

Food and drink

The Gloucester Old Spot (012426 80321) is a 20-minute walk away or a couple minutes’ drive, the freehouse serves local ales and ciders and their food has been included in the Michelin Guide to pubs. Five minutes’ drive away is The House in The Tree (01242 680241), a great country pub with outdoor and indoor space as well as a children's play area and animal petting zone. No.3 Restaurant (01242 903790) is just over a ten-minute drive away, serving everything from a full English to their renowned tomahawk steaks. Their main restaurant is lovely but there's also a charming outdoor dining space, which is covered for all weathers.
