Camping and glamping in Sussex meadows and woodlands

Dernwood Farm offers wild camping and rustic off-grid glamping among the ancient trees of a Sussex woodland. You arrive here down leafy lanes then check in with your lovely hosts at the farm shop and cafe which doubles as campsite reception. The car and all the stress of the journey are abandoned as you make your way to your home for a night or two. Whether it’s a bell tent, a cabin, or simply a patch of grass in the field, the walk through woodland with wheelbarrows sets the tone for your stay. You slow down, take in your surroundings, enjoy a bit of nature’s magic… and breathe.

As you make your way through the trees, the glampers are signposted off to their private clearings in the woods. The site’s wagon, shepherd’s hut, cabin, and safari tent each have their own personality, quirks, and space but do have some similarities. They are all furnished with made-up beds, their own loo, the means to cook, and a fire pit outside. The wagon and the cabin both have a hot tub too. There are also three bell tents which come well equipped – but without bedding included.

If you’ve come with your own tent, you finally emerge into the main camping field to find a car-free, sheltered idyll that you can access only on foot. It’s a lovely spot where you choose your own pitch. It’s the kind of place that once you’re in, you’re in. With tree swings, dens, and footpaths through the surrounding 70 acres of trees, why would you go anywhere else? Okay, so you might want a shower at some point. If so, just toddle back up to the main facilities (there are loos in the field, but no showers). Those are close to where you parked your car and, while you’re there, perhaps pop into the cafe and shop. It’s stocked with everything you need for a weekend of camping including farm-fresh burgers, bacon, and eggs. If you want more than that, how about a long walk to the local pub? Or a trip out to some of the nearby Sussex attractions: Drusilla’s Zoo Park, the Bluebell Railway or even the beach at Pevensey Bay.

Oak 6 metre Bell Tent

(5)
Bell tent · Sleeps 6
Come glamping in Bell Tents! Our Bell Tents are sited just off the sunset side of the camping field so they catch the last of the evening sun. The 6M (sleeps 6) Oak bell tent is in its own private wooded clearing. Inside each tent is a wood burning stove and extremely comfortable sofa beds which turn easily into very comfortable beds at the end of the day.  In 2021 we extended the decks and built new outdoor kitchens for each tent with 2 ring gas hob, sink and all the crockery etc need for your stay, this reduces the shared facilities meaning each tent is more self contained. Oak has a table with bench seats in the out door kitchen. Each tents has a fire pit with tripod and Dutch oven, great for cooking stews, or even pizzas in! You need to bring your own bedding and towels. We also suggest you bring a torch and a battery powered light for use inside the tent. We provide an initial ‘fire pack’ of 1 x 15kg net of logs, 1 net of kindling, 1 pack of fire-lighters and a pack of matches. More of all of these can be bought at our shop. Dogs are welcome but please can they bring their own beds and bowls! The bell tents have their own toilet and shower facilities shared between the 3 tents. We are always aware of our green credentials, so we have built a ‘Tree Bog’ situated in an ancient grove of willow trees. There is an outdoor (cold) shower – you can either heat up some water to put in the galvanised shower bucket, all part of the fun, or there’s the shower block up at the car park for the more faint hearted! No smoking inside the tents please. The Cabin

100%
(2)
Cabin · Sleeps 5
The Amazing Spaces woodland cabin was originally built by a team from William Hardie Designs after an idea by architect and innovative design aficionado George Clarke. It provides complete privacy in our ancient woodland, and has a wood fired hot tub! The build was filmed throughout, and used local resources and timber harvested from our ancient coppice woodland. It was shown on the third series of the Channel 4 programme George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. The Cabin sleeps five people. As a couple you would use the double bed of the triple sleeper in the bedroom. If you’re travelling as a family the children can have the bedroom and as parents you can use the sofa bed in the main space. It comes with plenty of logs and kindling to start you off, and more are available to buy at reception. Lighting is Victorian oil lamps, and solar lights; as the space is light and airy and not vast, it is easily lit, however you will need a torch for night time loo trips and trips to the car park. You park your car in the car park and then ferry your gear using our fleet of trolleys and wheel barrows the short (200m) walk to the clearing. Bedding and linen is provided you will just need to bring bath towels. The Cabin now We have made substantial changes to the cabin since then. It has tripled in size, as although the small space with hidden furniture worked well for TV, on a practical level it just didn’t! We have created a separate bedroom and doubled the size of the living room, creating an open plan kitchen/diner/sitting room. The last remaining winch down wall was fun but required lots of elbow grease, has now been upgraded to a permanent deck with glass doors leading onto it, meaning you get all the benefits of the light and the space without the effort! The sitting room end has a comfy double leather sofa bed with red velvet curtains you can pull across making another cosy bedroom. The bedroom has a triple sleeper (double bed at the bottom, single on top) so that if you’re travelling as a family you can put the kids to bed and have a bit of adult time at the end of the evening. If you’re a couple it means you have a separate room and won’t have to use the sofa bed. For cooking there is a gas oven with a hob plus you can get a pan on top of the wood burner. The door from the living room goes out onto the covered deck with armchairs and a fire brazier, so you can sit round the fire even if the weather is not on your side! The wood burner inside makes the whole space really warm and cosy all year. The Cabin is fully equipped for five people; pots, pans, enamel plates etc, cutlery and proper wine glasses! There is also a large cool box which I will give you ice packs for on your arrival. The outside space is why you’re really here; within the clearing is a fire pit surrounded by oak seats and table with a grill and tripod and dutch oven. Nestled into the hazel coppice is the large wood fired larch hot tub which can easily fit 5 people, right next to this is a large out door hot shower and hand basin. Together with the composting loo made out of George’s favourite ‘wiggly tin’ you are self-sufficient in your den in the woods.

Come glamping in Bell Tents! Our Bell Tents are sited just off the sunset side of the camping field so they catch the last of the evening sun, Ash & Willow are 5 metre tents sleeping 4 people. The Shepherds Hut is situated in a clearing in the woods near to The Cabin and The Wagon. In the main living area the sofa pulls out into a full-size double bed and upstairs the loft bed sleeps 2 children (If they’re happy in a top bunk they’ll be fine up there) the roof of the den is blackboard and lots of colourful chalks are provided for their masterpieces!  There’s a little wood burner and a double gas hob. We try to give everything we create its own unique feel, so the Hut, aside from being stunningly beautiful, has a hot water outside wet room along with hot running water inside too, and in the clearing just off the deck is the fire pit where you can BBQ our famous farm grown meat. A hammock is provided which you can sling between two trees and laze away the day.  Tucked into the corner of the clearing is the wonderful ‘tree-bog’ toilet which now it’s up rather looks like a little chapel! There is a picnic table on the deck and log bench seats around the firepit, which has a large cast iron BBQ grill.

Family legend has it that we have gypsy blood running through our veins, so over one winter Dad and my Uncle Trevor have lovingly restored our old livestock trailer with their own take on a Gypsy caravan come Showman’s wagon. Drawing on traditional methods and designs they have created our next glamping offering, with a Victorian cast iron water bowser converted into a gorgeous wood fired hot tub you’ll never want to leave! She was towed to her private woodland clearing in March 2016, where along with the hot tub there is an outside loo – just like we already have at The Cabin. The Wagon is situated in our ancient woods a little way up from the Cabin and Safari Tent, around a 5 minute walk from the carpark. Bedding is provided.  Please bring towels

Woodland campsite and luxury glamping… We are family run working farm in the heart of the Sussex Weald, in between Brighton, Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells. We have woodland pitche(only bookable via our own website) and a camping meadow in the middle of 70 acres of ancient coppiced woodland. Ideal for those who enjoy a bit of wild camping with open fires, and we are dog friendly! We are tent only. All pitches are unallocated, you can pitchup wherever you like when you get down to the field. We only advertise 10pitches via hipcamp, our field can take 30 tents. Glamping We also have lots of gorgeous glamping choices from bell tents in gorgeous private clearings, with wood-burning stoves and toilet and shower facilities to right at the top of the camping scale we have our safari tent, situated in a large sunny glade in an exclusive area of woodland. This has 3 bedrooms, wood burning range, and hot water. You really couldn’t ask for anything more. It is the ultimate in luxury camping. The Cabin was built by a team from William Hardie Designs after an idea by architect and innovative design aficionado George Clarke. The build was filmed throughout by Channel 4, and used local resources and timber harvested from our ancient coppice woodland. It was shown on the third series of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. It has a great big wood fueled hot tub which will fit you all in. The Wagon is our gypsy caravan and perfect for two people, with its own wood fired hot tub made out of an old Victorian cast iron water trough it’s the perfect way to escape – sitting in the hot tub watching the stars in your secluded woodland clearing will shake off the city blues. Our newest addition is The Shepherd’s Hut, a great family option, it sleeps four with a cool loft bed for 2 children and sofa which pulls out to a large double. It has a walk in wet room with hot water shower and hot running water inside the Hut too. Tucked into the corner of the clearing is the amazing tree-bog toilet, which looks rather like a tiny chapel. As with all our beautiful spaces it is situated in a private woodland clearing with a fire pit and outside seating plus a table on the large deck. All our accommodation options are placed sensitively in clearings in our woodland. We are not like so many sites, where you are just plonked in a field with everyone else and have no privacy. You are immersed in the woodland, able to reconnect with nature, unplug from technology and find refuge from urban existence and everyday life. As one recent Tripadvisor reviewer put it “re-wilding the children at Dernwood”. I couldn’t have put it better myself! Our cafe serves our home produced award winning meat for breakfasts We are a dog friendly campsite, providing they are kept under control! No unaccompanied under 18s Please – no breed banned under the Dangerous Dog Act.
Nearby attractions

The Cuckoo Trail, a spit from the site, is a great option for cycling or walks – weaving through woods, fields, and the best of Sussex countryside. Drusilla's Zoo Park (nine miles) is great for kids as it has fantastic play equipment (indoors and out) as well as a host of animals. The south coast at Pevensey and Normans Bay, named after the Normans who landed here a thousand years ago, is just 20 minutes away for days at the beach. Alternatively, pop into The Observatory Science Centre (seven miles away) for hands-on science and, on selected evenings, a peek through their telescopes. There are plenty of grand houses and gardens in the surrounding countryside too including Batemans, once the home of Rudyard Kipling (eight miles), and Sheffield Park Gardens (18 miles) from where you can also hop aboard the heritage trains of The Bluebell Railway.

Food and drink

Your hosts, sisters Amanda and Emma, run Dernwood Farm Shop and Cafe at the entrance to site. Stock up on steaks before heading to camp – they’re hung for 21 days so are bursting with flavour. They also do a good line in breakfasts and brunches if you don't fancy cooking and stock basic camping supplies too. Beyond the woods, The Six Bells in Chiddingly is a 45-minute walk away (just under three miles). It comes highly recommended (voted Best Bargain Pub in Britain) for its tasty fare and shabby-chic decor. Other recommended nearby options for a meal out are The Gun Inn at Gun Hill (which has a children's play area) and The Star at Waldron. Both are about three miles away and walkable in an hour.
