Cleghorn Farm is a mixed farm just north east of the market town of Lanark. Comprised of 250 acres of fields and woodland and bounded to the south by Mouse Water, it is a beautiful spot to get away from it all without having to leave it all behind if you don't want to. The fields are grazed and cultivated but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last ice age with spectacular walks along Cleghorn Glen with the chance to see badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the towering pine and beech trees.
The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde, all a gentle walk from the sites.

Escape to the Woods
Tucked away amongst the trees at Bowie Wood, our spacious 6m bell tent is a secluded woodland retreat designed for slowing down, switching off and reconnecting with nature.
Set on its own raised timber platform, the tent looks out into the woodland, with a covered awning creating a sheltered spot to sit outside with your morning coffee or simply listen to the forest around you.
Inside, natural coir flooring, a king-size bed and the warmth of a wood-burning stove create a cosy retreat whatever the Scottish weather decides to do.
This isn't a manicured campsite. You're staying within our woodland, surrounded by mature trees, mossy ground, ferns and wildlife. Red squirrels, roe deer, woodpeckers, buzzards and bats are all visitors to Bowie Wood, and after dark the woodland becomes wonderfully peaceful.
Follow the woodchip path back to your tent, light the stove, make a hot chocolate and settle in for the evening. On clear nights, step outside and look up — away from the bright lights of town, the woodland is a beautiful place for stargazing.
Although it feels hidden away, Bowie Wood is close to Stirling and makes a wonderful base for exploring central Scotland, from Stirling Castle and Bannockburn to the Ochil Hills, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs.
Bowie Wood is an ongoing rewilding project, where we’re working to restore and enhance the woodland while allowing nature to flourish. You may notice areas of ongoing work around the wider site as we continue to improve habitats, paths and facilities. We aim to keep any disruption to guests to a minimum.
Come here for the quiet, the trees and the chance to experience something a little different.

What a beautiful spot for some camping. It is a short walk up to the campsite itself but the hosts provide wheelbarrows to help move things back and forth.
The campsite itself is lovely, enough space to keep to yourself, or plenty of room around the firepit for everyone.
Stunning views of the countryside, with only the odd train passing nearby. The occasional sounds of the deer and cows, alongside the bird calls helped settle me into the nature nearby.
Hosts clearly care very much about the campsite, accessiblity to the outdoors, and giving back to the land.
Would absolutely recommend, and will book again.

St. Conan's Escape was such a beautiful area to disappear into! The property manager, Hazel, did such a phenomenal job of preparing the space--it was so beautifully-decorated and clearly well-maintained that I could see this as the perfect experience for other solo travelers or couples looking for a beautiful location to sink into.
I found St. Conan's Escape when looking for a place to go off-grid for a couple of days in the midst of traveling, and it had everything I needed--all of the amenities including plenty of cookware, a bathroom and extremely comfortable bed, so that I could focus on my writing projects. What a beautiful scenery it's in, too! I woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the mountains in the distance and I was so sad to leave such a majestic view. I would absolutely return and recommend it to anyone looking for a new experience!

Where to go
Balloch
The gateway to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Balloch is a pretty village lying on the south-west shores of the loch. In the village, Loch Lomond Shores offers a variety of activities, from boat trips to a children’s playpark and bird of prey centre. Camping options range from touring pitches in caravan parks to glamping pods.
Balmaha
Farther up the loch, and just over the Stirlingshire border, Balmaha is another of Loch Lomond’s main gateways. The village has a good visitor center and a number of companies offering cruises around the loch. The West Highland Way passes close along the eastern side of Loch Lomond. You can find nearby campsites with tranquil lochside settings.
Bowling
The village of Bowling has a picturesque harbour and is home to the Forth and Clyde Canal which stretches all the way to Grangemouth on the Forth River and is a popular spot for activities including boating, fishing, cycling, walking and wildlife spotting. The village is close to the Kilpatrick Hills where you can wild camp, according to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
Dumbarton
On the north bank of the River Clyde, Dumbarton’s main draw is Dumbarton Castle which is dramatically perched on top of waterfront volcanic rock. History lovers will be interested in this castle, one of the oldest fortified sites in Britain, which has served as a Roman outpost, dark age citadel, medieval castle and military base. West of the town, the Overtoun Estate has wooded glens, parkland, exotic gardens and good views of the surrounding Kilpatrick Hills.
