Camping in Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve

·

One of the wildest swathes of Britain, Assynt’s Knockan Crag is a geological riddle writ large in stone. Located in the North West Highlands Geopark to the north of Ullapool, it is an exceptional site for time travelling, to read the bedrock for signs of the past and to stand awestruck by millennia of geological change. But that’s not the only reason to come to this remote far northwestern part of the Highlands. The nature reserve has walking paths as well as sculpture and poetry trails that will take you to low cliffs, glittering pools and sites of special scientific interest. There’s also a visitor centre, complete with trapped-in-time turf roof, and steeper climbs to bewitching viewpoints.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book well in advance. Situated on the riotously popular North Coast 500 road trip around northern Scotland, the coastal campsites in Assynt and around Knockan Crag fill-up exceptionally fast.
  • The longer lead time you give yourself, the better the pitch. Travelling a year from now? It’s definitely a good time to lock in dates and book ahead.

When to go

For long evenings and unforgettable coastal sunsets, June through September is the best period to visit. May traditionally is one of the driest and quietest months, ideal for arriving before the tourists crowds at the height of summer, while in winter you will likely have the trails of Knockan Crag completely to yourself. The unmanned Rock Room visitor centre is open 365 days, meaning you have all the time in the world to try to fathom the reserve’s billion-year-old history and dig into deep time.

Know before you go

  • Beyond official campsites and caravan parks, there are no facilities for motorhomes and RVs. Take all rubbish away with you and dispose of all your chemical waste and grey water responsibly.
  • If you wild camp, follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code religiously. Recent years have seen a spate of campaigns to help promote ethical and sustainable camping values.
  • Remote and all the better for it, there are few services and facilities in this part of northwest Scotland. Ullapool is the mini-Manhattan, with everything you’ll need.
