Welcome to Fernlea. We would love to have you visit us, either on our 5 pitch campsite for motorhomes and caravans, or in 2025 to our new luxury glamping pod. Fernlea is our home in the heart of an agricultural plain called “The Carse of Gowrie,” which runs for 20 miles or so along the River Tay between Perth and Dundee. It’s a beautiful area that we hope you will love too. We are a short walk from the village of Errol, with access to lovely walks along the Tay. We are adjacent to the local bus route (just stick your arm out!), the Sustrans cycle route 77, plus only a mile or so from the A90 Perth to Dundee / Aberdeen road. We are perfect for both a short stopover and a longer break with a fascinating local area to explore. All pitches have hard standing, water on each pitch, grey waste disposal adjacent to the pitch, and a 10 or 16 amp electric supply with a chemical toilet waste tank with rinsing tap behind our garage. We are also within easy access to Fife and the southern area of the Highlands. Walkers and bird watchers will find many footpaths by the River Tay and can climb the local hills to see buzzards, hawks, ducks, and migrating geese throughout the seasons. Any visitors requiring repairs or accessories for their van will find the large Perthshire Caravan dealership nearby. Every Sunday, one of Scotland’s largest car boot sales and markets is held less than a mile away. The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde.

The clearing is surrounded by mature hedges and trees and you can lock the gates from inside if you want to enjoy nature ‘au naturale’ although the whole estate is clothing optional for any naturists who care to visit. As well as the composting toilet there is an outdoor kitchen and a gas powered outdoor shower. Solar panels provide lights for the cabin and the kitchen. There is plenty room for up to three large tents in the clearing which is home to some fruiting apple and cherry trees, as well as blackberry bushes (feel free to help yourself in season) The fire pit is safe to use and we can supply firewood if needed. Guests are free to roam both the woodland which has over 10,000 native broadleaf trees and the 5 acres of natural wildflower meadow. The owners who live on site in a carbon free eco house are beekeepers and produce the locally renowned ‘Ballymoney Honey’ which is available to buy on site in season. There is a growing bird hide (willow dome) in one of the clearings which has views over the upper meadow and the ground nesting birds that live there. We don’t permit dogs or insect repellents anywhere in the estate to protect the birds and wildlife that lives here. Sorry!

Weekend Trip to Fernlea - Campsite & Pod

Staying at Bruce’s house was an absolute pleasure! He was so incredibly helpful and kind and the pod is perfect. I would live there for the rest of my life if I could! The kitchen is great. The hot tub is beyond belief and so good that it’s almost intoxicating. When my boyfriend and I accidentally reset the Internet, Bruce was beyond kind and helpful. Next time I’m in this area I will for sure Be staying here again.

Runach Arainn is even more lovely in person than in the photos. Great location for a peaceful and relaxing stay on Arann. The yurts are comfortable, the kitchen/fire-pit etc are well-equipped and the orchard setting is beautiful. It's just a short walk to the beach or to the Lagg Inn for dinner. Highly recommend.

It was amazing! The view of the surrounding fells and farms was so tranquil and peaceful. Andrew was a friendly and helpful host. The property was beautiful and there was a good community of campers there that socialized over breakfast. There were also trails on the property that we didn't get to. I would definitely recommend this campsite to anyone that is going to Scotland

The pitch is pretty much perfect if you want a basic camp. 4 of us with a camper had a great time from start to finish. Malcolm is very attentive as a host and kept us stocked with firewood and came to make sure we didn’t want for anything. Loch Ken is not too far away and has a good water sports centre with decent boat hire for fishing.

Where to go

Around Lochgilphead

In the center of town, next to the Crinan Canal, Lochgilphead Caravan Park offers a convenient location within steps of shops and restaurants and within walking distance of Kilmory Castle. The site has large touring pitches for caravans and motorhomes, as well as static caravans for rent.

Ardfern

Around 15 miles northwest of Lochgilphead, the bustling little village of Ardfern lies on the Craignish peninsula, facing the Loch Craignish sea loch. There’s lots of walking routes along the loch’s shores with views toward the offshore islands. For those traveling by motorhome, caravan or campervan, the small Ardfern Motorhome Park offers peaceful lochside pitches with scenic views.

Tarbert

A 20-minute drive south of Lochgilphead, the pretty harbor town of Tarbert is a hub for fishing fleets and ferry transport to the islands. The view from the ruined Tarbert Castle takes in the harborfront and over Loch Fyne. Tarbert Holiday Park has spacious touring pitches and heated glamping pods.

When to go

For enjoying long, sunny days in the great outdoors, visiting Lochgillphead in the summer months is best, although this is peak season and can get busy, especially during school holidays. September or October is a good alternative for smaller crowds and pretty scenery as the blooming heather turns the hills purple. Winter is quiet but days are cold and short, with the sun setting as early as 4 p.m.
