The Fauld Farm on the Isle of Mull

1 unit · Motorhome, Tent50 acres · Tobermory, Scotland
The Fauld is a small hill farm located close to Tobermory in the north-east of the stunning Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. In total, the land comprises around 150 acres - although most of this area tends to be grazed by our Highland ponies and Shetland/Cheviot sheep. In spring and summer, there are wild flowers and birds galore, and bracing fresh air is on tap all year round - as are the spectacular coastal views from the top of the hills. The farm lies within walking distance of the iconic and colourful fishing port of Tobermory, which offers a range of shops, cafes and pubs - as well as being home to the Tobermory Distillery at Ledaig. If you have a car, we can offer off-road parking for a couple of vehicles, and we also have parking space for two campervans (though we do not have water or electricity connections yet). PS: You are advised to come equipped for camping in wet conditions whatever the season - although we promise that the weather can be lovely too! We look forward to welcoming responsible, country-loving campers to The Fauld :-)

Campsites for hikers in Ben Wyvis National Nature Reserve guide

Overview

Ben Wyvis National Nature Reserve is a must-visit for everyone from mountain climbers to keen botanists and wildlife watchers. The flat whaleback ridge of the 3,400-foot (1,000-meter) dominates the Easter Ross landscape and the summit affords panoramic Highland views, including the entire Moray Firth. While walking, keep an eye out for wildlife such as ptarmigan and mountain hares on the slopes and golden eagles overhead. The slopes also support a range of flora including dwarf birch, dwarf shrubs, mosses, liverworts and lichens. While there are no campsites in the nature reserve, Riverside Chalets and Caravan Park offers camping and glamping just 20 minutes away.

When to go

Ben Wyvis National Nature Reserve is all year-round and offers something different in each season. For optimal conditions for walking the trails, the best time to visit is during spring or summer, which is also the best time to see ptarmigan, dotterals, golden eagles and rich mosses. Fall promises a landscape carpeted in rich colors and the spectacle of rutting red deer. The views from the top on a clear winter day are especially beautiful.

Know before you go

  • While it’s a relatively easy trail to the top, the weather can quickly change. Visitors should have sturdy walking boots, warm and waterproof clothing, and food and drink for the day.
  • Visitors should observe the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: keep to paths to avoid disturbing breeding birds and mosses; leave no trace, and refrain from picking flowers.
  • The closest bus stop is in the village of Garve, five miles (eight kilometers) from the reserve’s parking lot. Garve also has a train station with direct service Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh.
