As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. Dogs must be kept on leads at all time. We class ourselves as a quite site so no amplified music. The premier pitch is fully enclosed so dogs can be let off the lead. There is a maximum of six people allowed on this pitch at any one time. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. The ground is flat! Each pitch is numbered (very spacious) with it's own firepit in front of you. Very well set out. I like the one way system, easy to follow. Toilets clean. Site was easy to find as well. There is no 'view' to speak of but you are in the countryside so trees, hedges, birdsong and the stars at night. The host is a lovely person to have a chat to as well.

The walking straight from the site was amazing and the views from littlehangman down into the town were stunning. Paul provided us with a big bucket of logs and we kept the fire going for ages. 15 nights at Girt Down Camping

My family and I stayed at this picturesque site for 2 weeks and we had an amazing time. Lesley and her husband Paul were wonderful hosts, always happy to chat and a fountain of knowledge about the area. They kept the facilities clean even over a busy bank holiday weekend. There were two flushing toilets and one portaloo (to save those at the top of the site from walking too far), two warm showers, washing up facilities and a lovely converted railway carriage that had electrical points and a fridge freezer. On the few days we had rain this carriage was a great space to eat or play board games. The site has outstanding views overlooking the valley with combe martin bay. Alongside it is a public footpath taking you to great hangman and further Exmoor trails. You can walk to combe martin from here but it is a steep hill back up so bear that in mind if you take a lot of stuff to the beach. Also being up so high you get the spectacular views but it can be windy on occasions so bear the weather in mind when choosing your spot (you are not assigned a specific position so you can move if the weather changes). What i really liked was that the site was not overcrowded even when fully booked as the hosts keep numbers low. This meant it was not noisy and you did not feel like you were on top of anyone. We would definitely come back here.

Absolutely stunning!! The view was outstanding! The facilities were really lovely, a proper toilet seat! Couple of showers, sinks to wash hands and an outside washing up sink. It was cleaned regularly and well maintained! They had a hut next to the toilet facilities with a fridge and freezer, and a table if you wish to use. The owners are very friendly and came round regularly to check if needed anything! Definitely recommend! The road coming into the field was ok, it is quite even, and with a low car like my own, we was able to get through without a scratch!😅 Small village 10 minute drive and we also climbed the Great hangman which was a 40 minute hike!

We found the owners to be really friendly, and this spot has such an amazing view we’re sure to be back at some point. The communal area and washing up space is also nicely presented. We did spot what looked like a port-a-loo at the top area, and we had two loo’s in the bottom area. It would be great if there were more than two loo’s here as it can get rather busy. But the camp site is in such a beautiful location with amazing views, it’s well worth your time! We had a great stay, thank you!

This is a beautiful little campsite with absolutely fantastic views over the bay. The toilet facilities are very clean and Lesley and het husband are very friendly and helpful. We’ll be back when we're in Devon again!

This camping spot is incredible, I’ve been here on two separate occasions now and it’s not disappointed on either of them - the people who run it are really lovely and super helpful with anything you’d need. The facilities are nice and a good standard for a camping site. The view and location of this place is unreal, Combe Martin is also a lovely town to explore not far from the site.

Where to go

English Riviera

North of Dartmouth, the English Riviera is home to some of the UK’s most idyllic beaches. Head to Torquay, Babbacombe, or Paignton to stroll along palm-lined promenades, lounge on sandy beaches, and tuck into delicious seafood at ocean-view restaurants. Camping here is equally upmarket, whether you choose a 5-star holiday park with a swimming pool or a tranquil tent pitch with a view out to sea.

South Devon

Rocky coves, sandy beaches, and verdant estuaries stretch for more than 60 miles along the coast of the South Devon AONB. For the most impressive views, hike along the South West Coast Path, camp out by the beachside, or go bird-watching at Prawle Point. Just 10 minutes south of Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands is Devon’s flagship beach, or head west to Bantham beach or Bigbury on Sea to try kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Dartmoor

The River Dart runs north into the Dartmoor National Park, where you can hike across misty moorlands and rugged river gorges. When to go

Peak season in Dartmouth is summer, so book campsites well in advance if visiting in July and August. Sunny weather is the time for wild swimming along the river or trips to Blackpool Sands beach, but wildlife watching is better in spring and autumn when the water levels are higher. Hikers heading to Dartmoor should prepare for all seasons even in summer, but most trails remain accessible year-round.

Dartmouth has public transport links to many of the surrounding towns and attractions, but it is handy to have your own transport, especially if staying at rural campsites.
