1 night at The Peacock Shepherds Hut

We really enjoyed our stay here, the Shepard’s hut is great and in the perfect & private location. Hosts are very friendly and the animals on sight are a fab addition too! We would definitely stay again for a little getaway. The only things I would point out for anyone who doesn’t know the area- it is around 15 minutes each way to the local towns/shops, but this place is in the perfect location if you want to “switch off” and be surrounded by nature. The hut has all of the essential items, such as shower gel, hand soap, fire wood, tea & coffee and salt & pepper. However, my only suggestion is that I personally think that some local produce such as some fresh milk & eggs would go a long way and would elevate the experience massively. In saying this, everything was perfect with our stay😊

Weekend Trip to Over-the-Moon Luxury Shepherds Hut

This was our second stay at the shepherd’s hut and it was just as great as the first. It’s a lovely, peaceful spot and really well looked after. We also tried the eggs from their hens this time – they were delicious!

Weekend Trip to Chrome Hill campers

Absolutely gorgeous location! Right next to Chrome hill, also know as Dragons back and a short drive to other greats hikes in the peaks such as Mam Tor. It’s a small site which only has 5 pitches for campers/ motorhomes or roof tents. Small but plenty of spec either side of your pitch and at the back so you have space for an awning/ gazebo set up. There is also a lovely little enclosed area with a picnic bench for everyone to use. Only one toilet but plenty for the fact there are only 5 pitches, it was lovely and clean with a hot water shower. There was also a little washing up area outside to clean your dishes and a tap for filling drinking water! Much more than I expected from such a small site. 100% we will be back as it’s a perfect location for hikes and a gorgeous stay! The hosts were also super friendly and helpful before and during our stay! Thank you again ☺️✨ Oh and it’s dog friendly, what more could you want.

A perfect few days. Very kind and friendly hosts. Wonderful walking, perfect weather, perfect view, the beautifully clean showers and toilets, freezer for freezy blocks, my kind of heaven. Looking forward to the Bala light railway next time. I will be back. Thank you.

The views from the site are fantastic. The accommodation was fabulous , had everything you needed. For us it was a restful weekend after a very busy week. Ceri was fantastic and answered texts as soon as she got them. Would recommend.

Perfect getaway for me and my daughter. The hut is perfect, everything you could need and equipped and furnished beautifully. The views are stunning and the location is within easy reach of nature reserves and forests - spoilt for choice. It was so cosy and warm in the hut with the log burner lit and the fairy lights on. What a stunning setting—waking up to glorious fields, with alpacas and peacocks roaming freely! The shepherd’s hut was beautiful: warm, tastefully decorated, and full of home-from-home comforts. It had all the essentials we needed to make our stay comfortable and complete. We had an amazing few days—some precious time out for my little boy, and me. A peaceful, breathtaking location… just what we needed to rest the soul.

Loved my stay - the view is incredible and worth it for that alone. It was a last minute booking to make the most of the sun but I’ll absolutely be back for a longer stay. It’s a small field with pitches around the perimeter, and as a solo camper I felt extremely safe. James was lovely too!

We loved our stay at Over the Moon. Location was perfect, bed was extremely comfy and the hut was very cosy with everything you'd need. We loved the chickens mooching around and hearing the sheep and baby lambs. Such a peaceful and beautiful location. Thanks to Ruth & Jude and the animals ☺️

Eden's Nook is such a peaceful campsite..full of birds during the day and star viewing at night. The facilities are great, including the barbeque hut and Jane and Neville couldn't have been more helpful. And Jane's breakfast is delicious! We'll be back!

Over The Moon is a charming shepherd’s hut, and it was an absolute delight to stay there. The accommodation is thoughtfully designed and beautifully finished to a high standard. It was also super cosy and warm. The peaceful setting made it the perfect place to unwind and recharge. Waking up to the sounds of nature and enjoying the tranquil surroundings was just what I needed. I would highly recommend this hidden gem to anyone looking for a relaxing and restorative getaway.

Eden’s Nook is a beautiful retreat from day to day life, with everything you could want for a comfortable stay. I got a warm welcome on arrival and shown around the site, being the only one booked I was able to fully enjoy the indoor fire pit and bbq, the excellent showers and stunning scenery (the clear sky was something very special)! The site is well equipped with anything you might have forgotten and the hosts are lovely and helpful.

Mountain campsites near Derby guide

Overview

The historic East Midlands city of Derby is near other major cities—Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester—and some of England’s most beautiful landscapes in the Peak District National Park. As it’s a medium-sized city, most camping options are in Derby’s hinterland, in semi-rural areas where campers can pitch a tent or park their caravan in peace. Partly because of the climate, many caravan parks offer accommodation in more permanent structures, such as cabins and glamping pods. Campers who enjoy hiking and wilder natural experiences can head north to the Peak District, which mostly falls within Derbyshire.

Where to go

Peak District National Park

In a largely flat country, the Peak District stands apart as an attractive natural playground of high moorland plateaus, steep limestone valleys, and cliffy outcrops. Campers staying in Derby city can visit the national park on day trips for hiking or biking adventures, bring a tent for camping, or stay in a glamping pod at a campsite within the Peak District National Park. Wild camping isn’t automatically allowed in the park—to do so, you must get permission from individual landowners, but there are also a variety of privately run campsites around the park.

Nottingham

Just half-an-hour’s drive east of Derby, the larger city of Nottingham is perhaps best known for its place in the Robin Hood legend, so visitors can experience Sherwood Forest and other Robin Hood-themed attractions. It’s easy to visit on a day trip while camping in Derby, or find a campsite or caravan park on the edge of Nottingham city, some of which are located on farmland.

Cannock Chase

Less than an hour’s drive southwest of Derby, this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has been nicknamed the jewel of the West Midlands. Here, you can walk, cycle, or ride horses in the Cannock Chase woodlands and forests, alongside canals and rivers, and learn about the history of this area that was the hunting forest of William the Conqueror almost 1,000 years ago. Campers can stay at caravan parks within the area, around Stafford, or around Derby and visit on a day trip.

When to go

Spring and summer are the best times to visit Derby, as the days are longest and the weather is most pleasant for Peak District camping and outdoor activities. Winters are cold, with occasional snow at city level and more frequent snow in the Peak District. Some campsites and caravan parks close for the winter season.
