When it’s a ‘proper’ Suffolk wild-camping adventure you’re after, have a look at Lions Row, a spacious back‑to‑basics site on a working farm just outside Ufford. It’s completely surrounded by countryside, but only a handy five minutes’ drive from the pubs, takeaways and shops in Wickham Market.
You can park at the pitches, which are mown into the long grass. It’s a clever spot for families as it’s a mile from the nearest road, making it quiet and safe for kids to roam freely without any danger from traffic.
As this is wild camping, facilities are minimal: drinking water, a simple washing-up sink, compost loos and basic gas-heated outdoor showers are your lot. However, you’ll wake up to birdsong every morning and go to sleep by starlight on clear nights; just remember to bring torches and batteries for after-dark wanderings.
The views are peaceful and rural, and the field is bordered by deciduous woodland – great for exercising any four-legged pals – criss-crossed with footpaths leading to country pubs (there are four within half an hour’s walk). It’s also close to heritage attractions such as Sutton Hoo (10 minutes’ drive).

Me and my partner stayed at Chalky downs for 2 nights for a little get away ✨. Sharen’s land is beautiful, everyone is so friendly and we even got to order a sausage bacon and egg bap with tea and coffee in the morning! ☀️. We went into Brighton town for a bit of shopping and to see the sea, only a 14 minute drive and we parked in the station car park 👏🏼. Would 100% recommend and will definitely be going back! Thank you so much. 🫶🏼

We had a great weekend on Sharen‘s land, there appeard to be plenty of space although some places are a little hilly so need to be careful where you pitch your tent. Facilities were really clean, there were only three showers but luckily the campsite wasn’t overly busy, so it wasn’t an issue.

Beautiful surroundings, great place to pitch up my van for its first outing and has taught me what additions I need for my setup next time I go camping.
It’s well looked after has almost everything you need if you are a seasoned camper. The views are stunning and it’s so peaceful despite there being a fair few other people there. Would for sure stay again

We had such a lovely time at Chalky Downs. On arrival we were met by Sharon who was so welcoming and helpful. She had also noticed we had 2 little ones and had pre-arranged a spot with some shade for the hot weather, which was very thoughtful and appreciated.
The views are wonderful, and is close enough to a nice beach in Rottingdean and Brighton. Would definitely return

A campsite with a view! This campsite has the perfect location where you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, but can be in Brighton city centre within 15 minutes. Facilities were great, lovely and clean, and Sharon was so friendly and accommodating. We would definitely return.

The views are great. It’s very peaceful. There’s a great football goal in the barn. Tony is a friendly and interesting owner. It’s a really big field with waist high grass, so being on the opposite side of it from the loos or shower is a bit of a challenge - pitch on the loos side if you can. It’s quite a long way to get water too.

We had a really nice stay (despite the weather!) at Chalky Downs. The campsite has everything you need and all the facilities were always very clean even though it was a busy bank holiday. Sharen, the host, is lovely, so friendly and welcoming! We will be back I’m sure :)
