Campsites with private bathrooms near Narbonne

·

You’d be forgiven for thinking that France has only one Mediterranean coastline worth your time, but there’s more to the south coast than the French Riviera. Midway between Perpignan and Montpellier, Narbonne is the ideal gateway to this coast-less-travelled, and it’s the ideal spot for beach-hopping in your campervan, road-tripping through the Languedoc vineyards, or hiking along little-known coastal trails. There are no campsites in the city itself, but you’ll find everything from 4-star family campgrounds to simple rural Hipcamps within a short drive. The beachside campgrounds around Narbonne Plage or the lagoon are the most popular.

Campsites with private bathrooms near Narbonne guide

Where to go

Corbières Wine Region

Wine lovers, take note! Narbonne sits on the cusp of the Corbières wine region, one of the most important appellations of the larger Languedoc-Roussillon wine region. The area’s red and rosé wines are most notable, and with more than 300 wineries, there are plenty of options for wine tasting, along with walks and bike rides through the vineyards, and campgrounds, Hipcamps, and chalet rentals with views across the vines.

Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park

Just north of Narbonne, rugged mountain valleys and glittering lakes await in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park, part of the Massif Central range. Explore miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails, discover ancient Cathar castles, or head to a lakeside campground and enjoy swimming, boating, and water sports.

Narbonnaise Natural Regional Park

Vast saltwater lagoons, white-sand beaches, and coastal vineyards stretch along the Mediterranean shore south of Narbonne. The Narbonnaise Natural Regional Park protects more than 80,000 hectares of seaside wilderness, where you can go bird watching around the salt marshes, hike along miles of trails, or swim and stand-up paddleboard at your pick of beaches.

When to go

Summer is the most popular time to visit Narbonne, but the city sees nowhere near the number of tourists as the rest of the Mediterranean Coast, making it a safe bet for escaping the crowds. The sunny weather stretches from late spring through early fall, and most campgrounds are open from April through October, so consider a shoulder season visit instead.
