The best campsites in Languedoc-Roussillon

·

Now part of the larger Occitanie region, locals still refer to the scenic strip of coastline between Provence and the Pyrenees as Languedoc-Roussillon. Whether you prefer hiking in the mountains along the Spanish border, relaxing on sandy Mediterranean beaches, or wine tasting in the vineyards—this is the spot to enjoy the south of France without the crowds of the French Riviera. History buffs will be in their element here, too—Roman ruins, Cathar castles, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites pepper the countryside. Spring through fall is the best time for camping, or you can rent a mountain chalet for ski season.

The best campsites in Languedoc-Roussillon guide

Where to go

Lozere

The region’s landlocked northernmost department is hemmed in by the rugged peaks of the Aubrac and Margeride mountains and dotted with historic villages. Hike, camp, or ski in the mountainous Cévennes National Park, go kayaking or canoeing through the Tarn Gorge, or escape to the tranquil villages of Nasbinaid and Aumont-Aubrac.

Gard

History rules in the eastern department of Gard, where you can marvel at the ancient Roman ruins of Nimes and Uzes, see the UNESCO-listed Pont du Gard, and explore the walled bastide town of Aigues-Mortes. From there, venture out to discover the wild ponies and marshlands of the Camargue National Park, or hit the road in your campervan and head to La Roque-sur-Ceze or Aigueze, two of “France’s most beautiful villages.”

Herault

The buzzing coastal city of Montpellier is the gateway to the Herault, and coastal campers will find some of Languedoc's best beaches between here and Narbonne. Take your pick of beachside holiday parks and family campgrounds, or head inland to discover riverside Beziers and the Languedoc vineyards.

Aude

The hilltop mediaeval citadel of Carcassonne is the undisputed highlight of the Aude region—couple your visit with a hike or bike ride along the 17th-century Canal du Midi or follow the Cathar castle trail through the countryside. If you prefer to stay coastal, the resort towns south of Narbonne provide plenty of options for beachside camping.

Pyrenees Orientales

The rambling peaks of the Pyrenees Mountains blanket the southernmost department of the region, stretching all the way over the Spanish border. Urban campers have mountain hikes, and vineyard strolls right on their doorstep in Perpignan, or you can ride the famous Train Jaune up into the hills. Alternatively, leave the beaten track behind and head out to hike, mountain bike, ski, and camp in the Pyrenees.
