The Guemes North Homestead is ten acres of gorgeous tall trees, clearings, homestead buildings, pond, trails, renewable energy gear, and more, set in the middle of the north end of Guemes Island, at the end of a 1/3-mile dead-end driveway. It has nature, quiet, and privacy. It includes a 30-year-old orchard, a developed garden with fine soil, a pond with rope swing and waterslide, several solar and wind energy systems, and multiple buildings. It's about a mile in two directions from the Pacific Ocean beach, and is surrounded by wooded acreage that is criss-crossed with trails and friendly neighbors, on an island with about 700 year-round residents and an active weekend/summer population. Homestead owner Ian Woofenden is an expert in renewable energy systems. He's lived off-grid at the homestead for 40 years, where he raised his large family and managed several small businesses. He now consults, sells, writes, and teaches about renewable energy in the U.S. and in Central America. If your idea of a great getaway is to help out and do physical work, just ask Ian. There's always something going on at the homestead, including garden and orchard work, trail building, wood cutting, construction, sawmilling, and more. Ian built this place, and has a broad knowledge of lots of homestead and sustainability topics. He loves sharing his knowledge and experience with guest, students, and interns. Quick reminders: NOT a party spot. Not a place for lots of car trips in and out. Bikers can ask for 25% discount (or use bike listing). Two-night minimum. No pets. One tent per site. Book a separate tent site for friends/family who want to camp near you. Questions always welcome.

Cozy Tiny House in the Woods
My friend Joe and I were looking for a quiet place to stay for our annual Halloween camping trip, and Ian’s Jess cabin was perfect! And not just because my name is also Jess. The ferry ride to Guemes Island is short and simple, and the car ride from the ferry to the homestead is also short and simple! We loved that Ian greeted us and answered our questions as we took the initial tour. The homestead is very impressive. The cabin is sturdy, well-crafted, and has a ton of thoughtful amenities. It’s also very cozy inside. We had the best time sitting at the small dining table playing games and eating. There is abundant wildlife on the homestead, which is especially exciting for us because we are coming from the city where there is not a single owl in sight. The beach is only a short walk away. And the compost toilet is super convenient! We made it our priority to be respectful because Guemes Island seems to be a tight-night community that doesn’t love obnoxious tourists. But people wave at you, and it seemed most island residents have cute friendly dogs (which I loved). Would recommend for any time of the year including fall/winter because the stove in the cabin makes the space very warm and cozy!

Something for everyone!
This was our 2nd year at Ian's fabuloous property. He nurtures the space and spirit beautifully so one feels right at home! My 8th grader son and his friends likely utilized every open space available to guests --from the pond's rope swing and row boats to the beautifully crafted teeter totter (and let me vouch that is fun for all ages!) to the woodshop. Highly recommend and we cannot wait to go back.

Sensational time !
Such a beautiful, restful, inspiring time at Guemes Hipcamp. Truly amazing, brilliant and kind-hearted host, Ian shares this most amazing getaway with any guests who might be interested. Can’t recommend this place in our world enough. An incredible amount of outdoor activities, or just hop in a hammock, or sit around your own fire pit. Sensational!

A fantastic camping experience
Oh my goodness, this is a magical place! The Rustic barn was perfectly as described. We LOVED having the kitchen space (sink with ample counter space, potable water, and a one-pot little fire stove) with some comfy outdoor chairs to sit in and sip our morning coffee. The host maintains some gorgeous walking trails that we thoroughly enjoyed. And the very best part (for the adventurous hearts) is the AMAZING treehouse playground that is a fun adventure for all ages! We are absolutely planning to visit again and stay a little longer at this magical place!

Beautiful and Inspiring Stay
This was our second time staying at Ian’s and has been my favorite camping experience in recent memory. You won’t find a more beautiful, thoughtful and playful place by which to enjoy nature, especially if you have kids. I’m not an orthodox backpacker who has anything to prove to myself about roughing it. ;) As a mom with her two kids, the amenities (solar powered rocket stove, rainwater sink, solar powered charging stations, comfy bed [byo sheets or sleeping bag of course!] clean and tidily kept composting toilet) made things just so much easier on the “caring for smaller people” front. We had time to relax, play, go to the beach and marvel at all the wonderful ways Ian has cared for this land. The swings and treehouses and pond and trails were the delight of my children and myself. This property is also a model for what sustainable living can be. I believe Ian is truly inspiring and this place is magical.

Incredible place. So much care has been put into this space and it is so lovely and peaceful, beautiful camp spots, a tall tree platform, tons of lovely paths. Ian was also a tremendous host, giving a tour and making sure my stay was excellent. I was a little hesitant to book since it would mean navigating the ferry, but it was super easy! Seriously stay here if you are considering it at all.

Ian's Robinson Crusoe design sensibilities are REALLY FUN. He has created imaginative play areas (think: giant teeter totter, zipline), a gorgeous (and private) composting toilet (complete with woods view and flag tied to toilet lid which informs approaching users that the toilet is occupied). He was happy to discuss his solar, wind, and water collection strategy - which mattered a lot to me. The hike to Guemes Mountain produced a view much like Mt. Constitution, albeit with far fewer visitors. There was live music of very good quality at the grocery store/restaurant. Had a great time. Thanks, Ian.

Ian was a wonderful host and has an amazing slice of heaven on earth. He has lots of fun activities for kids and adults- the zip line, tire swing, rope swing into the pond and treehouse to name a few. He has kindling and firewood at each site. The sites are nice and private. Right down the road there is access to a rocky beach. He asks for quiet hours 9pm - 9am so it’s a great sleep full of birdsong. Note, the sites are a little walk away from parking but he offers wagons to cart things. Amazing spot and amazing host- thanks Ian!

What a special place!
Ian was there at check-in to give us a tour of his fantastic property and make sure we were comfortable with all the amenities. We enjoyed wildlife (Beautiful bird song, baby dear! ) mushroom identification (Ian was kind enough to supply us with some books after we expressed curiosity about the different types of mushrooms growing in the woods), and his amazing garden. We are definitely going to return.

Two nights off the grid
Charming little cabin that felt worlds away from city life. Ian is a welcoming host, encouraging us to explore the fun activities (zipline, tire swing, rope climbing, treehouse) on the property. The wood stove, rocket stove, and fire pit + national strategic supply of firewood were a real treat. We kept warm in the cabin, easily prepped hot meals, and pampered ourselves with yummy s'mores. Looking forward to a future trip to Guemes Island!

Pretty freaking fantastic! Everything there is so cool. I loved the deep pond with the platform (and rope swing and slide). The barn I slept in was awesome and had a cool history. Ian was friendly and generous with firewood. The rocket stove is so cool! Bring matches. I didn't, and my lighter was too short so I used a piece of kindling which worked fine. The creepy sound in the middle of the night is a barred owl. Look up a recording before you go. You're welcome. Other than that, it's very quiet and peaceful. Unless you can convince the host to fire up his sawmill (took approximately .02 seconds), and in that case he has ear coverings. It was awesome. I loved the composting toilet (affectionately named The Palace). Beautiful view. 10/10 pooping experience.

Great experience!
One of the other reviewers mentioned something along the lines of the description not doing the Jess justice and they weren’t kidding. It doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the things to do and explore. I won’t go into detail though; I’ll let you be pleasantly surprised. Ian hosts a very cool site. I really appreciated the abundance of firewood, the tranquility of the cabin, and, most of all, Ian’s kindness and accommodations for us. My wife and I would love to go back.
